How I Changed My URL

If you have ever regretted the web address you chose for your blog, you may have wondered how you could change it without losing all of your past posts and information. Christian came up with the genius idea. This is how I did it:

When you're in your dashboard, click on settings for the blog you want to change, or if you are already viewing the main page of the blog click on customize in the top right corner, and then click on settings on the top left. Once you are in settings, click on the publishing tab. You will see Blog*Spot Address and then the name of your blog. All you have to do is change the name of your blog to the one you want it to be called (let's call it newblogname.blogspot.com), and click save settings. At that moment, your old blogspot address no longer works for the blog. But you haven't changed anything for the blog except its name...well, mine deleted my links to family and friends' blogs on the side (the ones where it had the names and when each one last posted {RSS feeds}; it kept my links to Private Blogs), but it was a small price to pay in order to change the URL of my blog (just save them before you do this). It kept all of my other applications, like pictures, sitemeter info, Ethanisms and Aidanisms, quotes, my weather widget, etc. *Sidenote: I didn't have a template on mine - I just use minima in the Blogger options - so I'm not 100% sure what would happen to that. I have been told that it keeps the background template too.

At this moment if anyone tries to get on your oldblogname.blogspot.com address, they will see a page that says,

Blog not found

Sorry, the blog you were looking for does not exist.

Don't let this freak you out. What you are going to do now is this: Go back to your dashboard (where all of your blogs are listed) and in the kind-of top right corner click create a blog. Then you will create a blog with the oldblogname.blogspot.com address again, the one you don't want to use anymore. This blog will be new and blank, and you can create one post saying that you have changed the name of your new blog to newblogname.blogspot.com, and that you will give people a little time to change their bookmarks etc to this new address before you delete this oldblogname blog. Then, when you are ready, go to settings, scroll to the bottom of the basic page, and click delete blog. Then you will have your blog with the newblogname.blogspot address and all of your old information on it, and your oldblogname address will be gone.

I hope this makes sense to you!

Thanks! I've been thinking of changing mine because it is so cheesy and has odd spellings in it. Now I just need to come up with something...

Thanks so much for this. I was actually talking with my friend that did my blog layout and she mentioned this exact same thing. Thanks for the heads up about losing your links. I'm still not sure about the template, but I'm hoping that will stay put.

I love you for this post. My blog URL makes NO sense to anyone but me, so I've been wanting to change it but didn't know how... :)
