Favicons

I have posted before about favicons, but so many people have the ugly white Blogger B in the orange square next to their URL at the top of the screen that I thought I would explain again. I think this only works for Blogger, so if you have Wordpress or something else, sorry, I'm no help. I love helping people pimp out their blogs if I can. (Christian informed me that he likes snarky Erin so I'm trying harder to be less p.c. by using words like pimp.) (I don't know what p.c. stands for. I hope it's okay.) (No I don't! Snarky Erin hopes it's not okay!)

Do you see the mini seahorse next to my URL (http://ifyougiveamomamoment.blogspot.com/) at the very top of the page? And there is also a mini seahorse next to the name of my blog if you have more than one tab open in Firefox (Internet Explorer too, I think). These are called favicons. I love seeing different favicons on people's blogs, like the adorable bird at Three Bay B Chicks and the picture Lee at Perpetual Burn just put on her blog. There are two steps to creating your own favicons. I'm sending you over to the links because I certainly can't take credit. (I am HTML code stupid but I was able to figure this out.)

Go here first. Read the instructions and do what she says. I did this quite a few months ago and I had a cute little sun for a favicon. Then a few months later it stopped working. A few weeks after that, Scribbit posted a link directing people to a place that would help fix your broken favicons.

Think of the possibilities you could choose for a favicon. Kristina P., you could have a picture of a Snuggie! Brooke, you could have a candy bar! Em-cat, you could have a hooker heel! Becky, you could have a teeny tiny map of Alaska, or a jar of cumin, I mean curry! These are just a few thoughts - I'm full of them. Well, I'm full of something.

So after you do the first step, go here next. Follow those instructions (using the entire two lines of HTML code you created the first time around) and paste the entire code where it tells you to. Then you should have favicons on your blog!

Unfortunately, some people can't see these favicons. I don't know why. So if after reading this entire post you still don't know what I am talking about, it's probably because you can't see them.

Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions or problems. Or if you want me to come up with an idea of what your favicon picture should be.

*Edited to add: Some people are saying they have had a hard time in the past making this work. Momo Fali said she got hers working this morning. I can see her favicon when I pull up my drop down list, but I can't see it on the actual website yet. I know it took my husband's computer two days to see my Eiffel Tower. I know this does work, because mine has a favicon and Lee at Perpetual Burn asked me for the directions yesterday and she got hers working too. Keep trying, and if you still have problems e-mail me and we'll see if we can get it working together!

*Edited again to add: Jared is my brilliant computer friend. He just wrote this in a comment: Your web browser will cache the original favicon, sometimes for days. You can either wait before the new one will start showing up or you can clear your browser cache and temporary files and then restart your browser. Thank you Jared!

And another edit: Two people have e-mailed me, telling me that they have done what the links told them to do, and they can't see it. I have gone to their website, and I can see it! So don't give up! You can do it!

Bless you for this. Clearly I need help in the pimping department. If my favicon doesn't change soon----then you can rest assured that I am even more technologically deficient that we had originally thought.

Me (aka Danielle) said...

I've always wondered how you did that! But, never got around to just asking you...

THANKS For Sharing!

Yay! I'm going to try this! I hope it's easy, because this Momo is a mo-ron.

I had a favicon. I lost it a few months ago. I have tried every stinking fix I have found on the internet and I can't get it back.

HMPF!

Momo Fali said...

I did it! Yay! Thank you so much.

It's like you are INSIDE MY BRAINS! Um. Ew.

But seriously, I was just working on this yesterday (over at TheMomJob.net - shameless plug) as I am starting to mess around with HTML (how scandalous does that sound? Poor Hubster...) But for SOME REASON I CAN'T GET IT TO WORK.

I'm off to try some of your helpful links to see if they can provide some assistance.
Thanks Erin!

Hi! I found your blog through my friend Jessi. I read it every day while I eat my cereal and hold my baby guy upright for 20 minutes after his bottle (acid reflux) Anyways, I love it! You are adorable and make me smile. Thank you! So, I made a favicon a few weeks ago and for some strange reason it disappeared. But I can't see anyones favicons anymore.... what on earth did I do??? Maybe I am beyond help, wouldn't be the first time...

I am one of those people who has no idea

Wow! You are so not about the glory! I can't believe your are sharing such a secret with us!

I could see your favicon when I used firefox, but lately I'm using something else, and I can't see it...

Brooke said...

What, you don't like my big ugly B? You don't think I did that on purpose? My name IS Brooke.

Erin said...

Haha Brooke. Choose a cuter B then! :)

This is awesome! My blog could definitely use more Snuggies. As could the world, frankly.

I can see a favicon when it's brand new, but after a while my computer just gets rid of it. Right now yours has the ugly Blogger B. Weird. I should try in Firefox.

Your web browser will cache the original favicon, sometimes for days. You can either wait before the new one will start showing up or you can clear your browser cache and temporary files and then restart your browser.

Cajoh said...

Where I would really like to see the icon is in blog-rolls. I've seen other blogs with it showing up. Makes me think that those blogs are ones that are on their own server— not blogger.com

Also, I would like to use a part of my background that I use on my blog as my favicon, but no longer have Photoshop to do so. If someone is willing to help I can send you the picture to lasso.

Kristen said...

I still don't have any idea what you are talking about. I really don't get along with computers well at all. I am just not seeing your Eiffel tower so maybe I don't know what I am looking for? Oh, well.

Love your snarkiness!

I am going to play with this all day! My kids are busy with schoolwork so I am going to be busy with favicons! Thanks!

jori-o said...

Thank you! I've been wanting to do this but didn't have the time to chase down the info! Okay, now I just need to figure out what my favicon should be...(any suggestions would be appreciated).

Annette Lyon said...

WAY cool! I'm such a techno-idiot (really) that I may insist my hubby do it for me. Cause now I wanna favicon!

Do you think people would still come by my blog if I chose a little jar of curry as my favicon? There seem to be a lot of avid curry haters out there! :)

I'm off to try it out!

OK, if I'm going to do this, I need ideas. There are too many options. And I am too indecisive. It's the only reason I will never get a tattoo - seriously, I would never be able to make up my mind as to something I'd like on my body for the rest of my life. And, ok, maybe this is exactly as permanent, but still, same principle applies.

i still think i need to tweak the pic i used but it worked! easy peasy.

Okay, I have been obsessed with this today because I can't see it after reading your comment on my blog I realized that I wasn't seeing the orange and white B, instead I was seeing the blue internet explorer "e" so I logged on using firefox and your little eiffel tower is so cute! I might have to just use firefox in the future when I blog so I can see who else has favicons!!

Jan said...

I have always wondered about how that is done. I love the Eiffel tower too. You are so smart. Appreciate your wisdom.

Heather of the EO said...

You ARE smart. This is great info. I don't know what mine would be...hmmmm, I'll have to think on this. You rock.

Just SO said...

Very cool. I'll have to see what I can come up with for mine when I have a bit more time.

Britt said...

Maybe I'll try it. PC means politically correct. I don't know what snarky means though.

How'd ya get to be such a smartie?

Lorie said...

Thanks for the link to the fix! Now I have another thing for me to tinker with on my blog!!

I have no clue what you are talking about. I guess that is because I can't see it:) Will have to check it out because now you have my curiousity piqued and I will have to play around with it.

Helene said...

I seriously just had a "duh" moment! Now I see your eiffel tower next to your URL..I was looking all over your blog thinking I was missing something.

I might try this!! Thanks for sharing how!

Scribbit said...

You know it was only a couple weeks after that that mine disappeared again but luckily it was only for a day. You never know what's happening with Blogger sometimes.

Laura said...

Hi Erin! This is so neat! I've actually visited your blog before, but I don't think I ever left a comment! Love the french look. I've kinda got my own french look going on on my blog, too. Anyhoo- thanks for visiting and following my blog. Good luck with the "Bubbly" and thanks so much for publishing these directions! Hopefully, one day I'll get around to doing something with my boring B! Good luck!

Amanda said...

Your favicon is awesome! I LOVE it!

Elisa said...

Very very cool.

I just need you to know tell what my favicon should be...

Oh THANK YOU for the linky love on my favicon tutorial!

My favicon just seems to come and go, but it's there most of the time. I just enjoy it when it's there and try not to let it bug me when it isn't!

I also have a new tutorial on how to make a button for your blog!! This one ALWAYS works because Photobucket hardly ever goes down. See it here!

Erin, once again we are twins. I did not know about favicon's so that was cool and I am so going to do it maybe right now. But I too love to help people pimp out their blog, I have, like, 5 people who I have their passwords and go on their blogs to do new backgrounds for them and such. It is my fav thing to do.

Mary said...

Great tips!! I'm just lazy though, but I might get around to pimping out my blog this summer.

Funny thought...the first time I said pimp during my sunday school lesson (to high schoolers) they were all shocked, but soon got over it as I recounted bible stories with phrases like "sucka, you can't touch this." Yeah, gotta find someway to keep their attention ;o)

carrhop said...

Thanks so much! I was using a different favicon server which completely messed up my loading time...but I miss having my own little pic in the browser window--so I'll go give your recipe a try!

Blessings!

Erin, thanks for posting this. I just created a new family blog, and came here for help with the favicon. I think I managed to get it working - thank you! (Check your e-mail for an invite to the new family blog.)
