My Current Dilemma

I love to read. I've told you this before. I read everything I can get my hands on: the back of the cereal box, the owner's manual for the blender, the sign at the park instructing people how to pick up their dog's poop; I'm not picky.

Here's my problem: I have 16 books collecting dust on my bookshelf, waiting to be read. I am a month behind on reading my magazine subscriptions (and with six or seven subscriptions, that is seriously behind). Every week when I get an e-mail with people's updates on Goodreads, I feel a little depressed. That is one more week that I didn't read a book.

The reason?

Because I blog.

This is where the dilemma comes in. As a SAHM (stay at home mom), my goal is to teach and have fun with my children. And keep a somewhat tidy house. And have something on the table at dinnertime. And run errands. And attempt to keep my sanity. I really don't want the tv to be a babysitter to my kids. Therefore, I have precious few moments to myself each day. I have to choose what to do with those moments. And I choose to blog, because I enjoy it so much.

That means reading gets thrown out the window. So does scrapbooking, playing the piano, practicing French, and any other sort of relaxing pastime. Because I don't have enough time to do everything I would like to (but then again, do any of us have time to do everything we would like to?)

So anyway, don't ask me about current events, because I don't watch the news or read the paper. Don't ask what new recipes I have tried out lately, because I'm just making old standbys. Just know that I am doing what I want to with my free time, and I'm really enjoying it!

P.S. What would you do if you had all the time in the world to yourself?

I know how you feel! If I read, then blogging is put on hold. Blogging is such a great outlet--I keep trying to convince like 6 friends of this, but they say they don't have time...but they do have time for tv:). It's just priorities I guess. To me, this has completely erased any scrapbooking I will ever do! I just need to find out how to print my blog into a book, and there I am, happy as can be that I have documented my family's life!

I'm with you. I do have to entertain Land more during the day because Sierra is at school now. I love to read, and bake. If I had all the time in the world, I would take a bath, read while I'm in there, then take a nap, not do my hair, get out of bed, make brownies, read a book while eating the brownies, blog, blog, blog, write emails, and hang out with my friends. Maybe even go shopping for myself.

I actually write most of my blog posts on the weekend and set them to post throughout the week. Then I have plenty of time to read (although our book club book this week has been a tough one to get through...we meet Thursday and I still have about 50 pages left), scrapbook, sew, practice, etc. :)

That's my solution. But I still get over involved in reading other blogs, I try to be done with that by about 10 every morning. Some days I'm successful, other days I'm feeling tired and I spend more time on the computer. :)

I have the same dilemma. I have stacks of books and magazines that I never seem to get too.
(PS I went to follow your dinner link but it wasn't working! What are you making for dinner?)

I think you actually have to click on the "follow me on Twitter" link, and then click on the link and it will take you to the right spot...

I've replaced reading lately with sewing. My library day used to be Wednesdays but now I go to the doctor on Wednesdays and just don't feel like heading there too. Plus I kind of have a big deadline coming up that will alter my life (and my free time) forever.

Don't feel bad. We do what we enjoy at the moment. At the moment you like blogging. Sometimes I feel bad that I sit and watch a movie or blog instead of working on my scrapbook, then I realize that if I felt like scrapbooking, I'd be doing it!

My spare time changes. Reading when I have a book. Right now, I'm wanting to start "Kite Runner" but I'm not sure I'm ready to immerse myself in another book. Other times, my spare time is just watching TV or a movie. Coming up soon, it will be sewing a Halloween costume for Shelby. I've never sewed a pattern, so we'll see how it turns out. I have a back up just in case.

I would go to a movie, grocery shopping, walk around the mall just window shopping, watch one of my shows without having to turn it WAY up to hear it, and read an entire book NO interruptions. You know.. I'd do things you can't do once you have kids :)
