A Cool New Album

A couple of days ago my mom sent me a cd. I vaguely recognized the name of the artist, but couldn't place her. So I popped it in my cd player and was surprised to hear that it was in French. One time through the cd and I was completely hooked. I called my mom to ask her the story of why she sent me a french album. [For those of you who don't know, I'm a francophile. A frenchoholic. I took four years in high school, four years in college, and received my bachelor's degree in French and linguistics. I have been to France twice, for one month each time, and I'm hoping/praying to go again in May to visit a friend who lives there.]

My mom told me that she went to the Mall of America recently while in Minnesota on business. She stopped at Borders and heard a song playing over the speakers that she really liked. She sat down in the store and listened to four songs on the album, and then she found a salesperson and said, "I need to buy this cd. Who is it?" My mom doesn't even speak French, but the music was so mellow and beautiful that she knew she had to have it. They told her it was Carla Bruni's latest album, entitled "Comme si de rien n'était" (As if nothing happened). She bought it and sent me a copy. I have listened to this album six times in the last 48 hours, and I LOVE IT! It doesn't even matter that I know French; I know you would love this album too. One of the songs is ready to play on the sidebar right now. I didn't want to scare any of you, so I didn't have it auto start. Push play and listen to it. My favorite song on the album is called "Tu es ma came" - you are my drug. There are five songs that I just adore. (I just checked and the album is on iTunes; if you want to listen to any of them, check out "Le temps perdu" (Wasted time) and "Tu es ma came".)

The interesting thing about Carla Bruni is that she used to be a supermodel, has had many affairs with many men, and she now has three albums (this last one just came out in July), and she is also currently the First Lady of France. Yes, she is French president Nicolas Sarkozy's wife. Her reputation is somewhat questionable, particularly considering she is a political wife (she has been quoted as having said, "I'm monogamous from time to time, but I prefer polygamy and polyandry"), but I don't care! This album is amazing!

LOVE LOVE LOVE the music. I usually love lots of types of "world" music, but I seem to especially like things with a french influence. There are two english speaking groups you should check out if you like the feel of this song. The first is Belle and Sebastion, (whom I believe took their name from a famous French children's book) the second is The Gentle Waves ( who are a break off of Belle and Sebastion)) Also, check out Seu Jorge "the Life Aquatic" soundtrack, it is David Bowie Songs slowed way down, sung acoustically, and in Portuguese...Beautiful!

That is fun music.

I guess I should have had you tutor me on my French diction for my recital a couple weeks ago. :) I had to take French, Italian, German and Latin in college as a vocal performance major (and then I went and served a mission in Romania), but French was ALWAYS the most difficult language for me. I much prefer German. :)

I minored in linguistics....fascinating stuff. Love language. Love.

That's beautiful! My husband served a mission in France (and I have some comprehension from studying French at school), so we have a small collection of French music (mostly Francis Cabrel and musicals like Hunchback and Les Mis). Looks like we might be adding to that collection - thanks for sharing this!

I took a year of French in High School so I know exactly what she's singing about.

If I ever refind my french Charlie Brown comic book I will have to send it to you.

This song is very catchy. I want the lyrics (in french and english) so I can sing along.

P.S. I'm glad to find another Spongebob lover. We have a family tradition of watching non-stop Spongebob on New Year's eve while eating every junk food we want.

Just saw your comment on my post this morning, thought I'd answer your question:

Yes. Children's Place is in St. George. The bonus is that it's in the outlet strip, so I've gotten some awesome deals there. However, my shopping yesterday was done completely on their online site. :) Of course, then hubby and I went to the temple last night and got there too late for the last session, so we went to the real store, too. And I bought some clearance stuff for Christmas. :)

Finding new music that you like is one of the greatest things in life.

I just wanted to make it clear for everyone that I sent you the actual cd and did not "burn" you a copy. I will now have to purchase it on itunes so I can listen.

I'll have to check her out. Isn't good new music so wonderful and refreshing? I just discovered The Weepies (a Canadian folksy duo) and I'm in my honeymoon stages with it. I bought all 3 albums and listen to one almost every day, and feel happy.

I tried Colbie Caillat, Corinne Baily Rae, and couple others a while back. I liked them a lot for a month or so, and then not so much after that. The Weepies I've been loving, LOVING since May, so I think they're going to stick. Anyway, congrats on happy new music! So fun.
