Jaywalkers are Dead Meat

On Monday I renewed my driver's license. I moved to Utah from Iowa over two months ago, and they say you are supposed to update your license within 60 days. Oops. But, more importantly, I wanted to register to vote, and I couldn't do that in Utah with an Iowa license. So of course, I waited until the very last day possible before it was too late (Oct. 6).

Because my old Utah license had expired, they made me take a written test. Ugg. I'm almost 32, haven't had a ticket since I was 18, never been in an accident (knock on wood) and I had to take the written test. It had 25 questions, and I actually took it on a touch screen computer. I was well prepared - my 3 year old, who had to come with me, was safely watching SuperWhy on my iPod (two episodes of SuperWhy are downloadable for free from iTunes; you're welcome). The test is open book, and I was thinking, "What kind of questions are these going to be? Do I actually need a book?" Thankfully, most of the questions were common sense kind of questions, like "True/False: If you drink three beers in an hour, you will be considered legally drunk, and you will remain drunk if you drink one beer per hour after that." But for a few I needed the book, like, "How many feet away from a stop sign can you park?" I didn't know if it was 30 or 50 (I still can't remember, but at least I looked up the answer in the book!)

After I took the test, I got my results: 24 our of 25. I scrolled until I found the question I got wrong, and I had to laugh out loud. I had missed the word "not" in the sentence.

It was a true/false question. I entered true.

The question was: "It is not against the law to hit someone who is crossing the street without using a crosswalk."

Apparently, in between making sure Aidan was content with SuperWhy and trying to flip through the stupid book to find out what to do when the light turns from red to green and I'm approaching the intersection (that question was tricky!), I didn't notice the "not." So I guess in my subconscious, it's okay to hit jaywalkers.

Moral of the story: Don't go crossing the street in front of me. I might run you down.

P.S. I just found out that the SuperWhy episodes aren't free under "episodes," but there are two free episodes if you type in "superwhy podcast" on the top right corner of iTunes where it says "search iTunes store". And there is a Marth Speaks episode for free, and my kids like that show. Here's how you find it: iTunes, TV Shows, PBS Kids, Martha Speaks.

That is really funny. I missed the red light to green when I renewed my drivers licence last year. I waited until my Massachusetts one expired because I did not want to take the written test. Who doesn't secretly what to hit a jaywalker who is too lazy to walk ten feet to the crosswalk. :)

Yeah--I agree with Heather. WHO doesn't want to hit stupid jaywalkers that can't seem to muster the three or four more steps to the crosswalk?

Can you come to my elementary school and teach the parents the parking distance from a Stop sign? NONE of them seem to remember that one!!

THAT's pretty funny!

My brother was just telling me that the test is open book. Seems to defeat the purpose, but whatever.

Listen, the jaywalkers are the ones breaking the law. They get what they deserve.

K, so I still have my Arizona license and I managed to register to vote. I wonder how I did that? I really should go and change it, but my AZ one doesn't expire till 2039. :)

Too funny about the jaywalking.

I'm usually under the influence of one of more children while I'm driving. I can't always be held responsible for my actions.

Ya, what's up with the test being open book?? I mean, I hope it is in Idaho for when *I* have to retake it, but that makes me nervous when i think about all of the 16 yr olds, lol.

I've had an Oregon drivers license in Idaho for 2 years now (but I can still vote) - and want to know something bad? I've kept it because because I can pay for big purchases at Ikea when I go to Seattle and not have to pay their rip-off sales tax, lol.

I'll look for the cross walk! You're so funny. Ethan and Aidan's comments on stinky skunks and big chests made me laugh!

I moved from Iowa to a western state just 6 months ago. I actually only just got my new DL 2 weeks ago...but for the same reason, wanted to register to vote.
We were in Des Moines County, where were you?

I noticed the "not" in the question but I'd still say true.

That is too funny!!! I guess I won't be jaywalking when you are driving by!!! Don't you hate when you have to retake a written test.

okay, that just TOTALLY gave me anxiety for you. i seriously don't know if i could pass a driver's test right now as an adult! even open book!

i just remember stressing about it so much when i was 16. maybe i would be like you and ace it.

prolly not.

Erin, my mom works at that office! She was there on the sixth so you probably saw her! Please don't hate her because you had to take the test! If it's your first time ever taking the test, then it's not open book, only if you have taken it before!

I love your missed question. I was told I'd have to take the test too, but then somehow got out if it. The same thing happened to Louie. Isn't that weird? Maybe they're just way relaxed up here. I actually cried when I took off my Iowa plates. I always thought "Story County" looked so cute, as if I came from the world of Mother Goose.

Happy voting! I need to make sure our 2nd move doesn't require me to re-register. I think everyone here votes at the same place. ???

I don't know how my husband did it. He still has his Arizona driver license (it never expires...they use to give lifetime drivers license). So we have been bad and haven't switched him over to a Utah license. Since he would have to pay money and take the test again. He is registered to vote in Utah. I wonder how we got around that rule. He has lived in Utah for 15 years...I wonder if that makes a difference ;)
