(re-post from Nov 20, 2007)

I've been going to the library weekly for at least four years. I spend most of the time searching out interesting books for my kids to read, and once in a great while I get some time to look for books that I would like to read myself. I always seem to be in the middle of some book, if not two or three books occasionally. Yesterday Ruth, Ethan, Aidan and I went to the library and Ruth played with the boys while I got 30 minutes to browse around and choose some books. I only stopped when the stack of books was from the bottom of my hands to my chin. I couldn't carry anymore! I had gone and found some children's books during this time too. When I got home, I realized something...I had seven books for myself, and six of them were non-fiction. I never realized that I like non-fiction so much! It took me four years of going to the library weekly to realize that most of the books I get for myself are non-fiction.
So then, last night I was joking to Christian that I would be neglecting him and the family for three weeks because I have seven books to read! And I said, "So many books, so little time." And then Ruth pointed out, "Wait a minute. Didn't you get a book at the library with that title today?" I looked through the books, and sure enough, I had picked up a book called exactly that title written by Sara Nelson. I hadn't paid enough attention to realize that at the time. I really am a little slow sometimes.
If you are interested in non-fiction books, one of my favorite of all time is called Garlic and Sapphires by Ruth Reichl. She was the New York Times restaurant critic, and she talks about going in disguise to restaurants because otherwise people would recognize her. Maybe I love this book so much because it combines two of my very favorite things: reading and food. Anyway, if you like to read, check it out!

That's it I'm going to the library today! Blogging alone is just not enough to sustain me. I have been bookless for a week now!
Have fun reading.
I love libraries! When I was a kid, they were my favorite place to go! And then I would read my life away, as my parents (who were trying just to get me to do my chores) would always say. But I know they were proud of me for loving to read!
:~D
I was just talking to my coworker about how I haven't been to a library to check a book out in probably 5 years! If there's a book I want, I will generally buy it on eBay or Amazon. Adam is the same way.
My kids are really into the library right now--which is good because then I can borrow books too!!
I like non fiction too! Most of my friends prefer fiction, but I love to read real accounts of people and places. Garlic and Sapphires sounds interesting...
I need to go to the library and pick out some good reads!
Thanks for the recommendation. I always seem to pick up non-fiction but then never make it through them. But the restaurant sounds great!
When I go to the library, it's all about me. And the kids are an afterthought. Does that make me a horrible mother?
I love going to our tiny library. I'll have to see if they have Garlic and Sapphires. It sounds really interesting.
I am definitely going to check out that book. I always wondered if sometimes critics went incognito so they could truly see if the place would be good for us common folk.
Hey, I linked over to your blog on mine! Has something to do with my 100th post giveaway!
:~D
I go through cycles of reading a ton and then not reading almost anything.
And I have a REALLY hard time reading non-fiction. I don't know why.
