The Past - Learn From It
The Future - Prepare For It
The Present - Live In It
(I will explain a little more about this in Tuesday's post.)
He said to be successful as a human being, it is important to love people, and use things, and not the other way around (use people, and love things). So true!
He reminded us all:
To dream ... the impossible dream ...
To fight ... the unbeatable foe ...
To bear ... with unbearable sorrow ...
To run ... where the brave dare not go ...
To right ... the unrightable wrong ...
To love ... pure and chaste from afar ...
To try ... when your arms are too weary ...
To reach ... the unreachable star ...
(Lyrics from Man of La Mancha)
What a great morning. Then, this evening, I had the wonderful opportunity to go to an alternate commencement. It was hosted by PFLAG (Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and Carol Lynn Pearson was the keynote speaker. And it was amazing. I have always loved Carol Lynn Pearson, since I was 12 years old and read her book "Will I Ever Forget This Day?" That book got me started in journal writing. And I read her book "Goodbye, I Love You" and cried through the entire thing a few years ago. She has a new book out, called "No More Goodbyes", and I was able to talk with her before the meeting started and she signed my book (I bought it there) and I got my picture taken with her (with Christian's cell phone camera, because of course I didn't learn from this morning and I still forgot my camera).

Now there is a final reason I think that Jesus says, "Love your enemies." It is this: that love has within it a redemptive power. And there is a power there that eventually transforms individuals. That’s why Jesus says, "Love your enemies." Because if you hate your enemies, you have no way to redeem and to transform your enemies. But if you love your enemies, you will discover that at the very root of love is the power of redemption. You just keep loving people and keep loving them, even though they’re mistreating you. Here’s the person who is a neighbor, and this person is doing something wrong to you and all of that. Just keep being friendly to that person. Keep loving them. Don’t do anything to embarrass them. Just keep loving them, and they can’t stand it too long. Oh, they react in many ways in the beginning. They react with bitterness because they’re mad because you love them like that. They react with guilt feelings, and sometimes they’ll hate you a little more at that transition period, but just keep loving them. And by the power of your love they will break down under the load. That’s love, you see. It is redemptive, and this is why Jesus says love. There’s something about love that builds up and is creative. There is something about hate that tears down and is destructive. So love your enemies.
She also talked about life being an obstacle course, and we agreed on our obstacles before we were even born. She says, "Bring it on! You volunteered for it." I love love love her. And her poetry. And her books. I could gush forever, but I won't. I'm very happy that today was such an uplifting, inspiring day that helped me remember who I am and why I am here.

What a great day!! I'm so jealous!
I remember as a little girl my mother would read Carol Lynn Pearson poems to us. She even would pay us if we memorized them. I did as a child but can't recall them now. I remember as a little girl being inspired by her wonderful words too.
Days like that are the BEST!!! So glad your cup was filled with goodness.
Sounds like an amazing talk! Thanks some wonderful ideas.
I have a book of Carol Lynn Pearson's poems. I posted a couple of them with her permission (via e-mail) a while back.
How cool for you! Thanks for sharing the words of wisdom shared with you! I love it. It's nice to get those reminders.

How lucky for you to have had President Monson speak at your graduation! Sounds like it was wonderful!
I have also enjoyed Carol Lynn's poetry. I like her stuff. (Is she LDS?) Sounds like you had a wonderful day. :)

CLP lives a hop skip and a jump from me and I have never met her.
What an awesome day, and a great date with yourself. You heard great speakers and got to ponder and reflect alone before having to talk about it with others.
He spoke at UVU's on Friday. (Someone probably already said this) but it's so cool! He hasn't even spoken at BYU for graduation yet.
What a diverse and interesting day for you. There's something so cool about listening to the prophet in person.
I'm so glad you had such an uplifting and inspiring time!
I was hoping he would speak at my commencement. But we had Neil Andersen. Which was very cool. How wonderful of an experience for you :)
What a great day! Lucky you!
What an awesome day. I so love the President Monson finds truth from places other than the scriptures. Not that the scriptures aren't awesome, but I love that he shows us that there are truths out there even in the secular things, and that they are worth spending time on as well.
And I loved the quote from MLK. I have never heard it before, but it is so powerful!
What an enlightening day! Sounds great.
That is really awesome. I'm glad you got to be uplifted! It's the best feeling!
It sounds so great!
I read "Goodbye I love you" several years ago and it simply broke my heart on so many levels....what an amazingbook, I have never forgotten it. I am a tiny bit jealous of your photos and all....
I am excited to read Tuesday!
PFLAG... sorry but that will ALWAYS remind me of Reality Bites. I loved that movie.
But I really like this post, Erin. I like it a lot. I think we should talk about Christ more.
Thank you, for the inspiration.
Lynsie
What a great and uplifting day. My husband also went and said it was great. Have a super week.
Erin~what a great experience for you!! Thanks you so much for sharing some of their remarks with us!! Such inspiring words. How uplifting especially at this time in this world!!!

What an inspirational post! Thank you for sharing your day with us!
I really love what President Monson said about the Past, Present and Future! So true!
Lookng forward to Tuesday's post!
What a wonderful chance to sit at the feet of a prophet and listen to his words. And very cool about meeting Carolyn Pearson. What a great day.
I love that you were able to attend. I went to a BYU devotional year ago when I was a student there. President Benson came and spoke. What an uplifting time it was to just have his presence in the room!! We arrived a couple of hours early to get good seats and it paid off.
What a wonderful day and opportunities you had! I adore President Monson and have always loved Carol Lynn Pearson's books. I read a lot of her books when I was young. Then she disappeared for a while and I haven't picked up her books since. Thanks for the reminder. I need to check out one of her books again.
You lucky duck! That is so cool, and I love the picture. Now we have to be friends since I can never find enough people that love CLP as I do.
