Ants on a Log

Watch this first: (and no, it's not the vlog I have been wanting to make but am too frightened to)(and yes, I realize I am just like Ross on Friends and I e-nun-ci-ate every word. I'm a dork.)

Now, check out these pictures as Ethan tried it:
Then, I turned away for a second. The next thing I noticed was that Aidan had thrown his away.
Apparently, Aidan didn't like it either.

(Christian can't stand celery. That is why I have never purchased it in the 11 1/2 years we have been married. Maybe I should have though, because clearly my kids aren't fond of it either.)

Lol! I am totally busting up right now as you know, I don't think my kids would have any idea what celery is either. :)

Oh, but wait they have recently learned thanks to Wonder Pets, but in real life.. yeah I don't buy the stuff either.

I haven't watched the video yet, but I don't need to in order to crack right up. We were doing "bug week" at our house last week, and I tried doing Ants on a Log. Yeah, the pb didn't even make it onto the celery before my boys were doing "eww...we don't eat CELERY! Gross! What are you giving us?!" So, yeah. Snack Fail at our house.

My kids like celery, but only if I peel it first. I don't like the strings either!
One book you should try is Deceptively Delicious. I have been loading veggies into my kids' food for ages now- even spinach in brownies and cauliflower in their scrambled eggs.
But then, my kids drink green spinach & yogurt smoothies for breakfast, so maybe we are not the norm!

Thank you for the chocolate chip tip- it might just save my sanity!

My husband doesn't do celery either- on Halloween, his mom used to tell him they were frog legs. and now whenever he eats them, he thinks frog legs.

LisAway said...

Okay, THAT is hilarious. I'm not a fan of celery either because what's the point? Sort of like water only unpleasantly crunchy and stringy (never heard of peeling it!) and with a weird taste. Although I guess that describes cucumbers (swap seeds for strings) and I don't mind those. . .

So funny Erin. Good effort at a failed attempt. Celery is pretty drab. Except cooked in some soups. Delish.

Ethan is so cute! Nice try on the celery, Mom. I bet we'd get a similar reaction at our house.

Too cute!! "Celery...I think"

I can't say I blame them for not liking it. Raisins? YUCK! Now the peanut butter, yes. Celery, Yes. But together..not so much.

Come on mom, everyone knows celery is better slathered in ranch dip! Silly girl!

Elisa said...

Raisins are NASTY.
Just sayin.

My kids eat celery & apples dipped in peanut butter. It's their fav.

I have to say that I am not fond of eating raw celery myself. It is a vegetable that is meant to be in soups and chinese food cooked so you don't have to deal with it's stringy texture!! It gives amazing flavor to soup but not so much when you eat it raw!!

I'm with Motherboard on the apples and peanut butter snack. It's divine. Especially Adam's Natural peanut butter. I eat it almost every day.

I cook with celery all the time. Like in soups and casseroles. My second child complains mightily about it, but I still make him eat it. I've never made any of them eat it this way. I'm pretty sure they would have the same reaction. Except, I don't think my kids would be polite enough to wait until I turned my back to throw it away.

Denise said...

Ooh, I love bugs on a log (so do my kids). You get the crunch with the celery, saltyness with the PB and sweetness with the raisins. A perfect combination. Did you like it?

Annette Lyon said...

I grew up with Ants on a Log! My kids love them. My husband doesn't, but I make them for the kids. :)

Jessie said...

Funny. I'm a big fan of celery dipped in ranch. Milo likes it, too. Louie also doesn't like it, so we rarely get it. I've heard that women are more attracted to their men if their men eat celery. Incentive? Louie thinks so. He's been eating it lately. hee hee

Fiauna said...

Hahaha!!! Surprisingly, celery is one veg my kids will eat without some type of fattening sauce ladled all over it.

Did I just see CHUNKY peanut butter on your counter? Because if I did, I'm not sure I can be your friend. Just kidding!!! I'll still be your friend. : )

Cluttered Brain said...

Did YOU try the concoction too? I also like celery with cream cheese on it. It's nice to be healthy too. We can keep our waistlines down is we would ALL eat a little healthier from time to time.

Okay. We heard your voice. It was excellent. Just go ahead. Be brave.
Supermom did it, on adventures of supermom. I know you can vlog! Looking forward to SEEING you soon!

That is so funny. So, Dillon can't stand celery either, unless it's in soup, then he's a little okay with it. I loved that video though! Too funny.

Britt said...

Celery ruins everything you put it in or put on it. Yuck!!

Diane said...

That was too funny!

Too funny!

My kids like them, but I don't! And it's because I don't like the Peanut Butter and Raisins. The celery, I love! :)

Kristina P. said...

See, I would have eaten them without the "ants". I only like raisins in certain things.

Strawberry Shortcake said...

This is hilarious! I think my girls have tried to like celery, but it's just too tough. Your boys are so adorable! And your house is very pretty too :)

Keyona said...

Feel good that you gave it your best shot! LOL!

Theresa said...

I don't like celery, it gives me indigestion... but I am with the others, at least you tried. Cute post:)

Lee said...

Awww, that's sad. I love celery! When I was a kid, I loved dipping it in ranch or peanut butter.
I suppose it's an acquired taste, and they didn't get to acquire it!

Kimberly Vanderhorst said...

I think my kids only eat it because of Wonder Pets (who celebrate their triumphs with celery at the end of each episode - weird, eh?).

So cool to hear your voice!

I love ants on a log! That's making me hungry. I think I need a snack.

CLASSIC!!
"What is this?"
"Lettuce."
"No, it's celery."
"Oh... I don't like celery."

I love this.

Adrienne said...

Who knew there was so many celery haters out there...not me? Kallie feeds her kids ants on a log with bananas instead of celery. Cut the celery and spread with a jar of bacon/cheese spread...mmmm
Kids are funny about trying new things....at least you try!!

Rachel Sue said...

So funny! My kids like celery, they just don't like it with peanut butter. Seriously. Whose kids are these?

Cranberryfries said...

I've made it a handful of times trying that 'introduce it at least 15 x's and they'll finally try it' rule and my oldest will take one bite, and my middle will scoop the pb and toss the celery. I hate it, hubby likes it. I just bought more today hoping to try it again. :)

Chloe m said...

I was LOL when your kids said it was lettuce. So cute! Thanks for posting!
My kids don't like celery, either. Don't you hate it when people make cookbooks and say it is for picky eaters and then you make the recipes and your picky eaters hate it? That's my luck.

Juannaelmi said...

I have to say I loved hearing your voice again! Really it was quite a pick-me-up so thank you.
I have tried some of those snacks and my kids want nothing to do with them. They like them individually, but not combined.

Laurie said...

That's hilarious. Personally, I hate raisins, but I've learned to like celery with peanut butter. Still not a huge fan of celery, though.

Katie said...

I love that your kids didn't know what celery was. We've never bought celery...neither Mark or I like it. I worry for when we have kids.

Az Kelms said...

How hilarious. I am now realizing that there is something good about me being on Coumadin for my blood clot. I don't have to feel guilty about not liking and eating celery. (I can't eat vegetables that are green because it counteracts the medicine.) No ants on a log for me.... :0

OH NO! That's one of my kids' favorite healthy snacks!

I am a very picky eater (I didn't know I was until I got married and saw all the weird things my in-laws eat) and my husband is always saying how "when we have kids you better make that, even if you don't like it so they can try!" ....We will just wait and see how that goes!

Wonder Woman said...

It's so fun to hear the voices of bloggers! And you do enunciate very well!!!

I am not a fan of broccoli and never serve it to my family. About a month ago we ate dinner at some friends' house and they served fresh veggies. The Hulk LOVED the broccoli. The next time we were grocery shopping, he saw some broccoli and practically begged for it. So I got some frozen stuff that comes with cheese on it. It was part of his birthday meal. Go figure.

First of all, I love how sweet you are with your boys. Second of all, I have to agree with them about celery!

Sher said...

My kids LOVE celery. (Do your kids ever watch the Wonder Pets? TJ always says he's playing wonder pets when he eats his celery)
My kids would love this, but I think it'd be an even bigger hit with easy cheese and bacon bits.
Hmmm.....
