My mom told me about a young adult series that she enjoyed reading, so I checked the first book out at the library. It's called Uglies, by Scott Westerfeld. You're sucked in with the first two sentences: "The early summer sky was the color of cat vomit. Of course, Tally thought, you'd have to feed your cat only salmon-flavored cat food for a while, to get the pinks right." I don't think I've ever read a book where I enjoyed the opening sentence more than this one.
The story is about a world where everyone is Ugly, and when they turn 16 they have an operation to turn Pretty. The Pretties live in a party world, and everyone (well, almost everyone) who is Ugly can't wait to be Pretty. And there is inevitable conflict because a few people don't want the operation. I loved this book and can't wait for the second book to become available at the library.
Watch This:
Christian and I watched the movie "Temple Grandin" last night. It's about a woman who has autism who goes to college to study animal science. In trying to figure out how to write a review for this movie, I am realizing that I can't do it justice. Let's just say that between the two of us, one or both of us may have been crying tears of happiness at the end. Claire Danes plays Temple, and she was amazing. (I may have had a crush on Claire in My So-Called Life, but her performance here blows me away.) Definitely put Temple Grandin in your Netflix queue if you haven't already seen it.

I've heard good things about Temple Grandin.
Temple Grandin just might be the BEST movie EVER! Of course it struck a cord so close to home for me and my husband, but seriously, everyo0ne will love it! Tears of happiness all the way~
I read Uglies and Pretties a few years ago and really liked them. I'm sure there's a third, but I haven't read it. I'll have to go look for it at my library now. The Claire Danes movie sounds really good, too.
I read The Uglies and Pretties a few years ago too. LOVED The Uglies, the second book was disappointing to me, so I never bothered with the third. :)
I simply ADORE that series. I've read it about half a dozen times!
I didn't know you hadn't read the Uglies series. I enjoyed the books so much, though the first is the best. And I will definitely add the movie to our list.
PS, LOVED the blindside on Survivor last week. Loved that Benry and Dan were exposed for the sleeze that they are. Such a weird season as far as alliances are concerned - everyone will do anything to anyone to get ahead. Can't wait for tonight!!!!!!
I'm always looking for good books to read. I'm in a book club and on Goodreads and you'll never find me without a book. I'm a total book worm, so thank you for turning me on to this! Thanks for the suggestion of the movie, too. I haven't heard of it. I hope you're enjoying your holidays.
I liked The Uglies. I read the first 3, the 4th sounds dumb and has all new characters so I didn't read that one.
I remember the oscar buzz about the Temple movie and seeing the real person in the audience. I was inspired, now I need to see the movie!
I really want to this book...
I read the first three in the Uglies series several years ago and loved them. Then I finally got my hands on the fourth (and final, I think) last year. Loved them all!
Loved the Uglies series! I didn't know there was a 4th...
Yes, my friend's daughters were really into this book. Sounds cool.
I hope you are ready for a great holiday.
You've talked me into Temple Grandin.
