Kaitlyn started crawling officially two days ago. We learned very quickly that she can open and close the dvd player at will. It's time to babyproof. I'm not looking forward to saying "No" more often, but it sure is fun watching her explore this new world that she can move around in.

I started watching the AMC show Breaking Bad with my husband a few weeks ago. (Thank you Netflix.) We are now halfway through season three. It's really a horrible show. In a good way. After every episode, I sigh or say, "Ugh," or scrunch up my nose with disgust, and then I say, "Well, let's watch another one." I'm definitely invested in the characters, and Christian and I have some good discussions afterward about what is right and what is wrong (is it okay to do wrong things for the right reasons?).

I have to admit, I don't understand the Young Adult genre of books at all. I mean, are they written for young adults or about young adults? Does the term "young adult" mean teenager, or 18-25? I've seen books at the library in the Young Adult section that I would not consider appropriate for teenagers. And I've been noticing many of the books that have been recommended to me are YA books (the latest is The Book Thief). I'm not a young adult, at least not in the technical sense, I think. Does anyone know how the YA genre works? I will be reading The Help next, based on two high recommendations. Do you have any other recommendations for me?

Yesterday at church, I was a substitute in the 11 year old boys' Primary class. There were thirteen boys. Then, I noticed a ruckus in the next room over (yes, I just used the word "ruckus"). I peeked in and noticed that the 10 year old class didn't have a teacher. So I invited them over. All five of them. So I taught 18 ten and eleven year olds in church yesterday. By myself. And I think I would rather do that every week than be the Enrichment leader, which I was just called to be. The thought of coming up with ideas that 60 women, ages 18-90, can relate to every month is WAY more intimidating than teaching 18 youth.

I pinched a nerve in my upper back/neck yesterday. I can't turn my neck without crying. Just sitting here is painful. I used to work for a chiropractor. I wish I could get free adjustments again.

Time to go clean the kitchen. I may not emerge for weeks, based on the look of it. Wish me luck!

Back and neck pain is the worst!
I've heard great things about Breaking Bad, but never started watching it. All the shows I decide to get invested in get canceled, so that's awesome.
I have to say The Book Thief is one of my all time favorite books, though not many share my enthusiasm for the book. I have The Help on my to read list and I just read The Kitchen House. My friend who loaned it to me said it was similar to The Help.
I am also confused by the YA genre because I feel many books in that category I wouldn't want my kids reading. Let me know if you find out.
I also miss free adjustments :)
I don't get the YA genre either. I can tell you that The Book Thief was written by an Australian who did not write it for children, but when the book was marketed in the US for some reason they put it in the ambiguous YA genre. It is, however, one of my favorite books.
Have you read any Jasper Fforde? Hilarious stuff.
Good job on teaching all those kids! You are brave.
Um, YIKES (about subbing for 18 boys...and your neck...and enrichment...and about babyproofing). I think I could bolt lock everything in our house and Luke would still find a way to get into it. Good luck all that!
I bet the Primary Presidency was EXTREMELY grateful to you--blessings showered on your for sure this week!
We are def fellow breaking bad lovers. My husband and I just finished season 1 and are gearing up for season 2. We've been super busy lately so we are dying to get started.
Yay about Kaitlyn!! That's such a fun time. I used to think of it as awesomely exhausting.
Sorry I can't help with the YA genre, but thanks for directing me to a few new books to check out!
Happy Monday Erin! :)
I get my book recommendations from my nephews. Hey, maybe you can ask the boys you taught for on Sunday for suggestions? :)
Totally hear you on Enrichment (or rather "additional RS meetings"). They can be a pain.
Sorry about your neck :(. Ryder isn't crawling yet, but I know he is going to be trouble with everything he will get into...not looking forward to that.
The Primary President is certainly grateful to you! Of course, I already knew that you are AMAZING! Thanks so much, and I'll try to be sure that the "18 youth in one class" doesn't happen ever again!
I like this post.
I pinched my neck last night too! It happens to me a lot, and luckily I finally found out that muscle relaxants fix it, but taking those means dedicating at least 12 hours to sleep. Which is why it's 7:30 and I'm almost ready for bed.
I always assumed that young adult books were meant for young adults to read. I prefer them.
I'm with you on Breaking Bad! My best friend got me hooked last year and I just can't stop watching!
Sorry about your back/neck.
I'm with you on the calling thing. I'd far rather sub a bunch of crazy prepubescent kids than handle enrichment. Yikes.
Enrichment leader would make me apostasize. No lie.
Hope your neck gets better soon.
You cannot clean a kitchen with a bad neck...
Sounds like a lot on the go, my goodness. HUGE sympathies on the neck pain. I had that happen a couple years ago and I remember how excruciating it was. You probably know (you're smart like that) but alternate heat and ice to help relax the tight muscles. Hope they unknot soon!
I have no idea what age group YA books are trying to go for these days. There are tons of books that I like right now that are considered YA. I think some of the YA books are a little "grown up" for kids and younger teens but for me they seem to be a better option than a lot of adult books that are filled with gore and sex. So I don't know.
You've got my interest with the YA book topic....
I sure wish my chiropractor made house calls. I too, need an adjustment.
Last year I'd say 55 of my 60 books were YA books. There are so many great ones out there!
As I understand the genre it's the characters in the book that are young adults. Once they're past 20ish I'd say it moves into a general fiction book unless it has another genre like mystery or sci fi. YA is basically just the age of the main characters is between 12-19.
(It was once true that mainly those kinds of books were only read by other young adults but for a while now authors and publishers alike have noticed that more and more adult readers have crossed the genre lines. Dont be put off my the genre term. There are SOO many amazing books in this genre. )
If the characters are younger it's a middle grade book (for example Harry Potter started out middle grade but as the characters grew so did the book genre and it had to be moved up a notch).
I find myself reading A LOT of YA books, since they don't have sex in them...which is a huge ick for me! I very frequently pinch nerves in my upper back/neck at work...while lifting patients...and it just plain sucks! Hope you start feeling better!
I agree that there are too many YA books that I would rather my young adult didn't read. The Help and The Book Thief are both great books. You should definitely read them! Happy Reading!
I usually only read the YA genre because (usually) there is less sex and a smaller amount of crap language.
The Book Thief is AMAZING. One of my favorite books ever. When you read it let me know what you think.
Sorry about your neck :( I hope it's feeling better.
Go Kaitlyn!!
Oh and Breaking Bad. I wanted to watch it but just couldn't bring myself to do it. Having people in your life who are or who have been addicted to meth gives you a different perspective on things I guess.
