Yesterday while I was teaching piano, I was talking to my student about what kind of music she likes to listen to (she has hit The Wall, which means she doesn't want to practice anymore. I'm trying to help her smash through The Wall). She said her favorite song right now is "Just the Way You Are." I immediately thought of Billy Joel, whom I adore. Then she said it's a song by Bruno Mars. I have heard of Bruno Mars, and I think I have actually heard the song once. But I can't think of the tune off the top of my head.
Then today, I went to Ethan's class to be a reading helper. Every Friday, four students and I read novels or non-fiction books together. Today we were reading about inventions, and we learned about the telephone and the camera, among others. But I had them turn to the front page of the book and learn that it was copyrighted in 1999, which means the book is 12 years old. I told them how much phones and cameras have changed even in just the last 12 years (since this book was written). One girl looked at me very seriously and said, "My mom was born in the nineteens."
I was born in the nineteens too. 1976, to be exact.
I'm Old. Old with a capital O.

Born in the "nineteens"??!? HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
My activity days girls were saying how they were born in 2002, etc. and it really startled me. I still think anyone born in the 90's is super young. Sigh.
My students are constantly making me feel old too! And mine are ages 18-22! They never get my pop culture references--I mentioned Lisa Simpson the other day and all I got were blank stares.
Oh, you've heard that song alright. It is the song Fynn sang to Kurt at the wedding on Glee. One of my favorite songs, too :)
And, yes, you are old. At least, older than me :) Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! Love you big sis!
Oh brother--the "nineteens"?! That makes us seem ancient! Sometimes I think that the only people born in the 2000s are currently infants or toddlers--like my children's ages. And therefore people born in the 90s are only slightly older than my kids. Reality is a slap in the face sometimes!
It's funny that Brooke should mention glee. Because honestly, I if I didn't watch that show, I would have literally no knowledge of current music. At all.
Hahaha -- that is AWESOME.
The nineteens...
LOL.
Please tell me that being born in the 19's doesn't make me old yet!
I'm glad I know what song you're talking about, but I will always love Billy Joel's more.
Yes, please tell me that I'm not old even if I was born in the nineteens. My kids were even born in the nineteens.. Okay, I'm old.
Crap I was born in the 19's as well and I don't feel old. On a side note, when we were in Disneyland they were playing on Tarzan's tree house and I commented to Steve that when I was little it was called the Swiss Family Robinson tree house. My kids had no idea what I was talking about. I hunted down the movie last weekend and had them watch it. They loved it, sometimes being old has it's perks like being able to show your kids a cool movie that they have not seen any previews for and know nothing about.
I work with teenagers and am reminded by this all the time. I have shown clips of Bowling for Columbine, and I forget that some of them weren't even born when it happened.
I'm even older- and ancient-er!
I'm old too...was born in the nineteen's too - I never thought I would be so old and feel like it too...although I thought the same thing about my mom growing up - now I am like "Wow, she's a young grandma"
Hey, oldie! Me too! Isn't it funny to catch glimpses like that and realize we're so much older than we used to be?
I am way older than you.
The kids I used to babysit are your age.
I like your Old with a Capital O...
LOL
Pretty crazy to have been born in the Nineteens! :)
I had a student come for his first lesson, and since I make them come prepared with a song to sing for me he asked if it was okay if he did classic rock.
I was picturing Led Zeppelin. He sang, Every Rose Has Its Thorn by Poison. Released my Freshman year in High School.
That is NOT classic rock! But, to somebody born in 1992, I suppose it is.
Oh, man. I love this. "Born in the nineteens." Yes!
I'm also so ancient :) Nineteens ancient.
I just found out recently that I'm the same age as Justin Bieber's mom. OUCH.
