Sunday, July 24

On Thursday, my family drove five hours to northern Utah to visit family. Then yesterday, my mom, sister and I, and our six kids, drove an additional 2+ hours to Idaho Falls to visit aunts, uncles, and cousins that I haven't seen or visited with in years. There were 42 people in my aunt's house for dinner yesterday evening. We had a nice meal, enjoyed the conversation, and, as always, I learned a lot.

- I learned that if you accidentally leave a meatloaf in the oven for nearly three hours, but you purchased the casserole dish at the D.I. (like the Goodwill) for a dollar, it might just be easier to throw the entire dish away than to try to clean it.

- I learned that my aunt's children massage her feet, and have for years and years. Now that they are older, they are GOOD feet massagers. They have even learned about reflexology. My cousin did amazing work on my feet (my back has been killing me for a couple of weeks now, and after he massaged my feet, my back felt better). I realized my aunt is a GENIUS. I am going to start having my boys massage my feet now - by the time they get married, their wives will thank me :)

- I learned that when there are 42 people in one house for a few short hours, you don't get a chance to speak to everyone for as much time as you would like.

- I learned that it was kind of weird (and really cool) to see my cousins all grown up with kids of their own. They are still young'uns in my mind!

- I learned that my "favorite" cousin (the only cousin my age) really loves me. She had an emergency appendectomy at midnight Friday night/Saturday morning, and begged her doctor to release her from the hospital in time to make it to the dinner on Saturday at 5:00.

- I learned that it takes more than 45 minutes to get my children to bed/sleep in an unfamiliar house. It takes less than 10 minutes at our own house.

- I learned that it is really fun seeing family I haven't seen in ages.

- I learned that I don't miss the internet when I'm too busy having fun.

And now I'm off to have more fun!

45 minutes to get your kids to sleep at someone else's house is still not as long as it takes my kids. One of my kids does not like sleeping away from home, hence, why we never leave town.

Seeing family is wonderful! :)

Love big family get togethers! Love that you threw away the casserole dish (smart). Love that your kids go to sleep so quickly...what is your secret? Mine take hours. I don't know what's wrong with them! :)

that WAS fun. and strange - like seeing everyone as moms themselves. (your kids are cute.)

Hey, we drove 6 hours to Southern Utah, too! But we didn't see family, just Mesa Verde and Arches Nat'l park. I learned that getting the two older kids their own portable DVD players was possibly the best decision I've made since I decided that kinda geeky cute guy was worth dating.

This is such a fun post!

My kids take 45 minutes to settle at home. You can imagine the hours, yes hours, it takes in an unfamiliar place. Thus, we never sleep over anywhere unless absolutely necessary.
(My 45 minutes is including bath and prayer and scriptures and all that. I guess once they're actually in their beds, in only takes a few minutes. Sometimes they take their sweet time getting PJs on, though. That can be quite a fight.)

I, myself, do not sleep well in other places, so I guess I can't blame them.

I'm glad you had such a great time.

I do love you lots and didn't want to miss that for the world! Family is that important to me. Thanks for coming up and making the effort - it isn't always easy but I'm glad for the time we did get to visit - it always goes to quickly and with so many people to visit!!

LOVE YA! Hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip!

It seriously only takes less than 10 minutes to get your kids to bed?!??!?! Wow....

I used to do reflexology. I haven't in years but I know I still have my chart around here somewhere. I think it's an excellent idea to get your kids to massage your feet every night. Ha!

Erin, it is so nice to be with family you havent seen in forever and be able to pick up where you left off. Some of my most cherished memories are with my aunts. One aunt in particular has been a really good influence on my life and I feel I've learned from her.

Family get togethers are the BESTEST! And I remember my boys not going to sleep very well when we weren't at home. Which would be why I traveled with benadryl all the time
