In My Humble Opinion...

What constitutes a good movie? Or, more specifically, what would you consider to be the worst movie you have ever seen?
Christian and I had a discussion about this last night. Christian looks for morals in movies. He wants to glean something from a movie that will pertain to his life somehow. He has always done this, even when he was little (doesn't he just make the perfect psychologist?). I've always just looked at movies as pure entertainment. Can I absorb myself in the storyline? Did I enjoy every moment of the movie itself?

Last night we watched what I might consider the dumbest movie I have ever seen. It is called The Dark Crystal. It is..."a masterful live-action fantasy starring some of Jim Henson's most imaginative creatures ever!" (taken from the back of the DVD box) Now, I will concede that this movie does have a good moral: good vs. evil, that there is light and darkness (or two sides of the coin) in most aspects of life, and that good triumphs over evil. However, in terms of entertainment, I was bored. I fell asleep twice (and we started the movie at 8:30). The characters are puppets, and weird ones at that. They make funny sounds. I would mentally glide away from watching, then snap back and wonder how long I had not been watching. I would be interested to know what you thought of The Dark Crystal if you have seen it.

The worst movie Christian has ever seen in his opinion is The Good Girl. He said it has absolutely no redeeming value whatsoever. I thought it had slight entertainment value, because it stars Jennifer Aniston and I think she's cute.

On the flip side of the coin, my sister Brooke is asking people what their favorite movies are. So I'm asking: what is the worst movie you have ever seen? Then go over to Brooke's blog and tell her what your favorite movie is. Then we will all have a collection of movies to laugh at and enjoy!

Oh my goodness--we watched that movie as kids cause my mom recorded off tv and I have ALWAYS HATED this show--Dillon borrowed from Kent (was that our neighbor in Orem?) and wanted to watch it with me--I refused to watch it cause I have horrible memories of that movie--it's scary and creepy and boring and WEIRD! The end.

I would say the worst movie is "Home Fries" I don't even remember what it was about, but I left. It was stupid.

Yeah I remember that movie being LOOOOOONG. But I think I still liked it. I probably side with Christian on the whole moral to the movie thing. Although, I think I also rate movies by how cute and/or smart the lead actress is since I spend the whole time pretending to be her anyway.

My least favorite movies are The Brothers Mcmullen (I wanted to watch it because it had a Sarah McCLaughlin song on it) so stupid!!!! I also HATED The Ring. It is evil, scary and evil!!! Never watch it!! Just because a movie is PG-13 does NOT make it okay! Blech!

I HAVE TO ADMIT I HAVE SEEN THE DARK CRYSTAL, OLGA WAS MY FAVORITE BUT THIS WAS AS A CHILD. I HAVEN'T SEEN IT IN YEARS. I HAVE A HARD TIME SITTING STILL SO A MOVIE HAS TO BE TERRIBLY ENTERTAINING TO GET ME TO SIT STILL FOR HOURS.

The first two worst movies that come to mind (but there are a LOT of them, I'm very picky) are: "At First Sight", and that Mormon cinema "Return with Honor". Both horrible, both had terrible writing, terrible stories, terrible directing, etc. Bleh.

The worst movie ever is "Mars Attacks" it came out sometime in the early 90's. My cousin forced us to watch it when we visited and we missed the fireworks on the 4th of July. THe Dark Crystal has always freaked me out. I agree with you, I watch for pure entertainment purposes.

I know you are always looking for a good novel. I just finished "The Book Thief" By Markus Zusak. It really is life changing in a good way. Beautifully written and just amazing. I haven't read anything this good in a long time and I read a lot.
