Last night, we had three "brown outs" in a row. The lights dimmed and came back on really quickly. Christian said, "Uh-oh, we'd better unplug the computer." So I ran over and unplugged it. Then, two hours later I plugged it back in and went to turn it on and...the little light came on, but nothing came up on the screen. We had a friend (thanks Chip!) come over and look at it, and it was fried. The computer was surged (the motherboard) and we had no more computer. So, after weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth on my part, four hours of research on Christian's part, and something hundred dollars, we now have a new computer. So, in the last four days, we had our car wrecked, fried a computer and purchased a home. And on Sunday I gave a lesson to the Beehives entitled "Overcoming Obstacles." It talked about how it is basically fruitless to think "Why me?" because trials are for our benefit. But when the computer broke I burst into tears and said, "What else can happen? My head is going to explode from the stress." But now we have a new, beautiful computer and, very importantly, access to the internet again.
And, today we drove down to Des Moines to sign the papers to finalize the purchase of our home. Yay!!!! So now it's time to call and start up utilities and all that jazz. I know it's not good to say "I'll be glad when..." but I will be glad when all the new home stress is over. It will calm down soon. Eventually. Someday.
P.S. We don't know yet whether our hard drive was corrupted or not. We pulled it out of the old computer, but the plugs in the new computer are incompatible with the old hard drive. So, we don't know whether we just lost every picture we took in Iowa, our budget, our checkbook, and all other frequently used applications. Keep your fingers crossed for us. However, we did have iTunes and all of our photos prior to Iowa on a second hard drive, so all is not lost. Let this be a lesson to all of you: backup backup backup!

This will make you laugh - when I first read "brown outs" I thought - Gee, Erin, do we really want to know about poopy underwear? So sorry you are having a "crappy" time. Being in Iowa you should know - when it rains, it pours. Hopefully some good stuff will be pouring down on you soon!
What a bummer. I've been thinking of getting an external hard drive to back up all of my stuff. I think this is a sign.
I thought the same thing Desta did about the "brown outs"! Good for you for backing up. So sad that you lost what you lost though. :(
You've just inspired me to back up all of my pictures onto discs. I can totally sympathize with you though. I've lost everything on our computer before. And I'm pretty sure we just lost everything on our laptop. Good thing it's a secondary computer, but we can't use it right now until we decide what we're going to do with it. Figures...we JUST paid it off and now it's not working.
All the stresses often pile up at once. That's just how it goes sometimes and it's no good!
We also just signed all our paperwork for our house - it was surprisingly non-stressful, but man, what a lot of paperwork, eh?
I did just back up all our photos and docs, in case something weird happens when we move the computer. Phew.
I'm sure things will calm down soon...and then you'll end up having a 3rd child or something. Hmm, maybe things NEVER calm down from this point. Yikes, let's hope that it does.
