The New and Improved Rules of Monopoly

Last week, my kids pulled out our Monopoly game. They had never seen it before. In fact, it had never been played before, so all of the paper money and the game board were in pristine condition. Ethan, my 5 year old, really really wanted to know how to play. But I told him the directions were pretty difficult, and the game takes around four hours to play all together. And who has four hours to sit around and play board games when you are a mom?

Just kidding.

Anyway, I made up what I thought was a fun version of Monopoly. I put two green houses on each property that has a color stripe at the top, and when I ran out of houses, I put one red hotel on the rest of them. Then we would roll the dice, count the number of dots, and move our token. If you landed on a property with houses or hotels, you got to pick them up. Then we kept rolling and playing until we had won all of the houses and hotels.

But, too quickly, Ethan got bored with those rules. So today, he made up his version of Monopoly. When I realized how entertaining these rules would be, I got a pen and paper and scribbled as fast as he was talking. P.S. Ethan was using the iron token, Aidan had the car token, and I had the hat token (notice that the iron and car get special treatment; the hat doesn't get a darn thing).

Chance - If you land on chance you get as many chances or turns as you want.
Free Parking - if you go to jail, you can zoom really fast (but only if you have the car token) straight to free parking.
Electric Company - If you are there, you burn your eyes, and then you go to jail.
Water Works - The water drips on your eyes so they aren't burning anymore.
Luxury Tax - This is how you get this watch (he didn't realize the picture was of a ring), but if you steal it, you go to jail.
If you land on one of the railroads, you get run over by a train.
If you land on Pacific Avenue, you go to the "just visiting" part of the jail (can you guess when he made this rule up?)
Community Chest - You get the pot of gold [token], and if you land on it again you get all of the [paper] money in the game.
Hotels and Houses - These are to try to get you out of the space you land on, and then you will go back one (I'm still trying to figure this rule out).
When you land on Income Tax, you get some money (can we incorporate this rule into the real world, too?)
However, when I landed on Income Tax right after him, I got burnt by his iron token. But then I got some money, but then I got sent to jail and I had to give the money to him since he was on that spot first.
Park Place - That's a great one because you get to play at the park!

So, these are the new and improved rules! Print them out, and next time you play with your kids, see if you get burned or go to jail. (Or see what kind of crazy fun rules your kids come up with.)

WOW! Talk about creative. I want to play with Ethan! We don't have monopoly or I would get it out and play it "Ethan style"!

Our monopoly game is in pristine condition, too. I don't even know why we have it...I never liked it! Maybe I will like it better with Ethan's rules?

Monopoly makes me physically want to hurt someone. I refuse to play it with the kids at work, for the very reason you described. And they are 15.

Oh, and did you hear that there's a new credit card Monopoly version? I could probably get behind that.

This is terrific. Could he keep the rules straight while you were playing? It reminds me of the game that Chandler and Joey play when Chandler moves in with Monica.
