My husband loves skim milk. So does my sister (in her own words: "It doesn't even taste like milk. That's why I like it."). At one point, when my kids were young, we had three different types of milk in our fridge: skim for Christian, 1% for me, and whole milk for the boys. (Oh, and the six month stint when I drank Silk soy milk [shudder] because I was nursing Aidan and he was allergic to cow's milk.)
I refuse to drink skim milk because I'm pretty sure it will do my body more harm than good. I drink 1%, and since I'm the shopper of the house, my kids drink it too...I'm nice to Christian, so I purchase him skim.
Are the milk "laws" at your house as crazy as they are at ours? What do you drink?

Yep! I have to have 1% and Cam has to have 2%. Luckily we both drinnk a lot of milk so we each go through our own gallon in a week.
There is now choice in our home, it is "VIVA SKIM DELIGHT" or nothing at all. I should take that back, when the store is out of "our" kind of milk we buy 1% and I will not touch it! But everyone else is okay with it.
Milk has never been my go to beverage. I really only drink it when I'm nursing and after that, maybe once a week. I've never thought to myself, "I'm really thirsty. I think I'll have a glass of milk." In his younger days, my husband could drink upwards of 4 gallons a week. He's really tapered off (he says he leaves it for the kids) and only has a couple of glasses a week now. He absolutely refuses to touch skim. He thinks it's just blue water and his feelings are pretty much the same on 1%. We currently have young children, so we only have whole milk in our fridge right now. Once the kids get older, we'll be drinking 2%. (Holy long comment. Sorry.)
I use milk with cookies and cereal. skim.
Chad likes 2%
The kids drink whole.
Well, obviously you know my take on milk, but my husband likes 2% and that is what I buy. I very rarely drink milk anymore, and I figure on cereal, I can deal with 2% since I will just be dumping it down the drain when I am done. I wish I could convert him to even 1%, but I have tried, and it doesn't work. Occasionally I will buy a half gallon of skim (usually when it is on sale), then about 1/3 of it goes to waste.
we are split. Hubby and I get skim, the kids get whole. The kids would get skim also, but I have trouble keeping weight on them, so they get full fat. They also get full fat no matter what till they are at least 2 for brain development.
We buy 1% and 2%. I am trying to be better and drink more milk. It's not my favorite. My boys love it though :)
If it were up to my husband, who was raised on a farm, we would only have whole milk in our fridge. But I compromised and bought 2% and he seemed o.k. Then about 1 year ago I made the switch to 1% and he seems o.k with that too. I am CONSTANTLY buying milk because it is his drink of choice. If he is thirsty--no water, milk. It drives me crazy but he is the breadwinner so I guess I can't complain--too much!!
We're a little more simple. Aaron, Lily and I drink 1%. Carter drinks whole. Once in a while we sip some whole cause it's yummy. I used to think whole milk was gross, not because I had tasted it but because it is more fattening. But really, it's tasty.
We buy 1 and 2 percent. I have just recently heard how skim milk is a cancer causer for men. So he is drinking 2 percent. Milk law. How funny Erin.
Chocolate for B whole for S and lacctos free for hubby and all of that is not cheep
We all drink skim. And by "we all" I mean those of us who will drink it or put it on our cereal (can you believe that half of my kids eat dry cereal out of a bowl with a spoon every morning?). Anything higher in fat tastes gross to me. You can't get fat-laden milk cold enough for me, either. I need COLD beverages, man.
Louie converted from skim to 1% when he married me. He's not too picky (but I sure am). I think skim milk is icky. Milo is a bit milk sensitive, so we have soy milk and/or goat milk for him, (and Chocolate Silk for me, but that's my special, non-sharing treat - I love that stuff).
I agree that skim can't be good for you. It has a higher concentration of animal proteins, which actually deplete calcium - I wonder if it cancels out the calcium? Anyway, I'm with you.
We go through over 6 gallons of 2% milk a week in my household. I only get about a cup of that. That's what I buy that is what they get. I really don't think they would know the difference b/c if it says milk it's gone.
I actually grew up with milk fresh from the cow bought at our good friends dairy. Mmmmm was it good then we always had whole milk when their dairy shut down. I love whole milk but we buy 1% or 2% depending on my mood because Brandon won't use whole milk and the othe stuff has more fat. But none of us drink milk but Owen. We just use it on cereal or in cooking.
Heh. My family will only drink whole milk from a certain grocery store. If I brought home 2% I would be flogged.
We just switched back to 2% form whole since Anniston turned 2 but we also have organic vanilla soy for Brooklynn. Wade's mom drinks that and she got Brooklynn hooked on it, too. I hate milk except on cereal so I don't care either way. Wade would drink whole milk all of the time, but he is fine with 2%.
Lactose intolerant over here. The kids and I drink Rice Milk (Bria is also allergic to Soy, so it just makes it easier to not have to buy 3 types of milk) and Joel drinks 1% LactAid.
i made the switch from 2% to 1%, but i would never be able to switch to skim. blech.
Oh yeah, I hear that. For a while I was buying skim for the parents, 2% for the kids, and whole for the baby. Then I decided to merge the kids and grown-ups to 1%, and now I am a happier mother.
ps I realized just the other day that they call it Silk because it's MILK with and S! Am I so nerdy to have not noticed that before? Not that I spend that much time pondering soy milk, but still.
pps you better come to enrichment tonight. I'm planning to go as long as mandie stops throwing up, so call me if you want a ride. We can tie quilts.
Milk is a great subject for me.
I come from a dairy farm and so I have had GOOD milk. Pure, I like to say. We have our own processing plant so milk isn't mixed with milk from another dairy that feeds their cows different stuff. It took me forever to find milk that tasted good enough here in Idaho. But I found that Albertsons brand milk tastes the best. I'll drink either skim or 1% but I like 1%. Jaren likes it too so we just have green tops in our fridge!
We only drink skim. I drink A LOT of milk, so it keeps the calories down, and the other stuff is just to rich for me.
2%all the way for this family!! My hubs would like 1% but that is water to me too!
and he grew up on milk straight from the cow!! go figure?!
power to the skim lovers!!
i am a skim lover!
We drink 1% here. If I could stand it I'd up the % though. Skim might be lower in calories and fat and whatnot, but it does not fill the ole tummy. If we cut too much fat out of our diets we'll starve, I think.
I drink 1%. Jake likes 2%, I buy it on occasion but I will only use it in my cereal, to drink it tastes funny to me. Now that Shelby is 1, she is supposed to drink D milk AND I have to get her off the bottle. Agh! I may be blogging about that soon. She won't take a sippy cup.
We have skim and 2%. If we could afford it I would keep 1% in the fridge as well. My son drinks 2%. I drink mosly skim. Depending on how I am drinking it. In cereal I have to have skim. For chocolate milk I prefer 2% but since I'm on a diet I like 1%. Chocolate skim milk is gross. Since we don't keep 1% I end up mixing skim and 2% for my chocolate milk fix. :)
My husband prefers whole milk, he'd drink heavy cream if I let him. The kids drink whole milk and I've been buying soy lately.
My daughter and I are both allergic to milk; the rest of the clan are not. My daughter and I are also allergic to soy, which makes it TOUGH to find an alternative, but we found Almond Breeze and it's GREAT! We hate Rice Milk. Bleck! The other half of the clan drink 2%.
Holy Comments!! I'm a whole milk person myself and so is Zoe. James hates milk but will settle for 1%. When we were really poop we would "compromise" and buy 2%. So no one was happy. I love milk!!! But I'm with you - I think skim is gross. You might as well just add water to an old jug of whole milk.
Yikes, that was supposed to say when we were "poor." That's what happens when you're typing with a toddler on your lap watching a disney short film in another window on youtube. Now you see why I don't comment as much as I'd like...
We drink .5% around here. HA!! You guys can't even get that! Well, you probably can in the fancy food aisle in unrefrigerated boxes, just like we get it over here. . .
My husband loves whole but settles for "skim" because I like it (as another commenter said, it doesn't taste like milk--good thing) and it's cheaper, which you notice when you buy it in big boxes (since, you know, you can have it sitting in a cupboard for 6 months before it goes bad. Nasty)
why no love for the skim? blue milk RULES!
and you are the mom, so you get to make any rules, milk or no, that you want.
I buy whole... I never drink milk and almost never eat cereal so it doesn't bother me.
It only goes in my coffee.
Your hilarious...I loved all your comments on my blog, thanks! I've been falling behind in the blogging world :( and I need to be better. I loved the photo tag:take two...although even your "dirty house" still looks great! The bowling alley is right off the north interchange exit, across from Maverick. It was pretty fun. It was $20 for one game for us. That was me, my hubby and our two girls...plus shoes. It was funner than I thought it'd be, the kids loved it! Oh, and we all are skim milk drinkers! Awhile back, my husband did a biggest loser challenge at work (lost 40 pds and won $1000--so proud of him!) and we started back then to drink skim and haven't ever gone back. I don't like milk at ALL to drink, but I can at least handle chocolate skim...maybe 1% but higher than that, too thick! :)
Can you believe I never drink milk? Makes me feel gross.
My boys drink organic only because I heard a scary story about early puberty and hormones and such. Call me paranoid. They drink 2%. My husband drinks soy milk.
We run up quite the milk bill.
The only real milk law at our house is there must be milk. I usually buy Skim for us and Whole for Toots (who is 1) but if I am cooking a jug of 2% will pop up. No matter what flavor it goes quickly. We have 5 bodies in our house and we go through 4 gallons a week. More if there are any type of cookies!!
When I was growing up we never finished a gallon of milk in my home. We ate it on cereal, that was it. So when I went shopping for the first time I bought one gallon. Two days later my husband asked me if we were out of milk. I said no, I just went shopping. But alas, it had only taken him 2 days to finish off the gallon.
And now I will stop before this comment gets any longer. I should have posted it no my blog! ;D
I'm fairly certain that skim milk is actually cloudy bathwater with a light dash of blue typewriter ink. But it's just a theory. In our house, it's 1% all the way.
URSXY---too perfect for words.
Before weddings and college 1 year ago....
Per week:
2 gal whole
4 gal 1%
1 gal skim
1 gal 2%
After weddings and college and with only TWO kids, and parents in home:
Per week:
1 gal 2%
3 gal 1%
Savings per week: Enough to put daughter #3 through college! All right, a little exaggeration. BUT, certainly enough per month in savings to pay for her food plan for a semester.
Milk is 4.50 a gal here unless we hit COSTCO and only have to pay 2.75 per gal.
There!
That's my milk story.
We are milk challenged as well- I ONLY drink skim (like your sister said- cuz it doesn't taste like milk), Kyle only drinks Silk Soymilk (shudder), and my boys used to each have their own gallon of 2% and whole- now they both do 2%. The only challenge- don't you find it's hard to finish your own gallon before it expires?
Yeah, pretty much! sometimes I am mean and just buy Skim because that is what I drink, but when I actually go to the store, skim for me and hubby, 1 % for kids and chocolate milk for kids!!
At our house right now we have two types of milk in our fridge: Skim and breastmilk. 3/4ths of us drink skim, the other 1/4th drinks breastmilk. =)
looks to me like you hit a "sour" note on this one! Wow 42 comments before mine. haha just had to throw that in.
As you know at OUR house I am the only one that drinks milk. skim milk all the way.
Mom
Hubby hates all milk -- no matter what. It grosses him out. He can however eat a whole carton of ice cream to make up for the calcium loss.
I prefer 2% but I am FORCING myself to drink 1%. If I get a certain brand, and keep it really cold, it's pretty good. I am too lazy to buy separate milk for everyone so we all drink 1%.
We usually have skim for me, lactose free for the youngest kid and 1% for Paul. We dont go through a lot though...maybe a gallon every 2-3 weeks.
If I had to pick one milk it would be chocolate. I'm not much of a milk person. We buy from a local dairy and the taste is so much better with no hormones etc. We buy skim but it is more the consistency between 1% and 2%. I won't drink anything else. (And of course the Soy milk for the kids)
Me and Devon drink Soy, and Dillon and Carson drink 2%.
I would rather eat my own head than drink milk. I can't recall the last time I drank an entire glass.
Right there with you, I usually buy 1% these days, but everyone else begs for REAL milk. I can only handle actually drinking skim, but I get so much flack for it I usually don't dare bring it home. Hunky hubby would drink half and half if I kept enough of it around.
Love the update to the photo tag. thanks for indulging the rest of us!
Did you know that skim and 1% are the same almost in calories, and fat content? SO when Scott and I do Weight watchers, it is the same in points? Funny huh?
Liz
We all drink skim, except for the babies who are either on formula or whole milk.
All my kids know what milk is theirs and refuse to drink any other kind even if we run out of theirs. Crazy.
Now that my youngest is 2 we all drink skim. I keep 2% around for my baking sometimes though.
