Voting From a Five Year Old's Perspective

Christian said to Ethan (our 5 year old) last night, "Who do you think is going to win the election tomorrow?" Ethan immediately said, "Barack Obama." We didn't even know he knew the name of either candidate (he didn't know the name John McCain, by the way). He must have been paying attention to some of the commercials over the last week or two.

Then, as he was climbing into bed, Ethan said, "Is Barack Obama going to be the president of the church?" No, we explained, he may or may not be the president of the country. There's a difference. So Christian asked him who is the president, or prophet, of the church, and he said, "Oh yeah, Thomas S. Monson." I remember being confused between the president of the church and the president of the country when I was little too.

Ethan is so excited to go and vote with me today. He has been talking about it for days ("Is it Tuesday yet? Is that the Crystal Inn we will be voting at?") I think he thinks he will be voting too. I just hope the lines won't be too long...thank goodness for my video iPod with SuperWhy downloaded onto it and a splitter so both boys can have ear buds and watch while we wait. I'm so spoiled.

I never thought to bring my kids with me to vote. I've been trying to figure out all day how to do it and the school where I vote in behind my house (like in my back yard).

I'm amazed at how much even my little ones have picked up on in this campaign. We watched both conventions, have followed the controversies and debates and will have sheets for the kids to color as the electoral votes come in--

Happy line-waiting!
Blessings!

We had much the same conversation in our home this morning. My 5 y/o son got excited about voting day and wondered when we would be voting. He seemed disappointed that I said I would vote while he was in school. I was stunned that he knew the names of the 2 major candidates. I had no idea he knew. He also thinks that Barack Obama will win, and if he got to vote, that's who he would vote for. He wanted to know who I was going to vote for and I thought it was interesting that he intuitively knew that just because we are in the same family doesn't mean we have to vote for the same person.

I don't know how much my kids really know about the voting, but I am taking Landen with me today. I'm sure I will explain it to them both. Maybe right now.

I'll only be taking Sophie to vote, although my other kids have been with me.

Perhaps I'll see you at the Crystal Inn (I always think a hotel is such a strange polling place!)

Thank goodness for video iPods! I voted last week. Early voting was nice! Sage was excited to come along and get an "I voted" sticker. (This year they gave me two, one for me and one for her. I was glad because last year I had to give her mine and I really wanted one.)

My kids (2 middle schoolers and and 1st and 3rd grader) all have mock elections. The older kids are both voting for McCain, which is more than their dad and I can bring ourselves to do. The little kids want to vote for Obama, which hurts my heart a little. But it's all in the name. Ist grader (boy) likes that he has the word "bomb" in his name. He also likes carrying around his cap gun. When 3rd grader said she loves the name "Brocko," I busted up. It sounded just like TAMN.

After a short economy lesson, they've both switched to McCain.

Do your kids watch Nickelodeon? They had some sort of mock election where the kids were able to go online and vote. Barack Obama won. They've been airing commercials nonstop with him thanking the kids for their votes.

I'm also pretty sure that at my kids school they had a mock election as well.

Adam and Emily would both vote for Obama if they could. They love to listen to him on CNN. Belle (3 yrs old) sees TV ads and said, "Obamo! look Adam it's Obamo."

Such a great example by taking them to the polls. It shows them it matters. Love the chat with him. What a cutie. I wish Monson ran the country.

Oh, I hope it doesn't take too long. So glad you have gadgets of distraction :)

My sister is voting for Obama, and my 6 year-old nephew knows all about him. He could debate circles around most adults.

It's hilarious.

I am convinced that a mother invented the iPod. I love the distraction it can be.

they asked grade school children who they were voting for on the news this morning.
one kid said "obama, because he likes chili, just like me".
at least he decided to learn a little about the candidates before casting his vote. ;)

lol. He is cute.

Obama is easier to say than Mccain. I'm sure that's why little kids keep saying his name :S

I remember going to vote with either my mom or grandma and they had a little table where kids could "vote" and I thought that was the coolest! I didn't see anything like that this morning, but there weren't any kids that were old enough to pretend vote there at 8:00 anyway.

I was wondering how I was going to vote with 3 kids today--hopefully Dillon will make it home in time to go, or maybe swap with some friends sometime today! It will be interesting tonight seeing how it all goes down!

My kids have been talking about it too! And I agree, it is easy to mix up the president of the church and the president of the country...ESPECIALLY when we refer to the prophet as both prophet and president. Happy voting! I voted today too.

I heard of one little boy saying he'd vote for Barack Obama because he has the coolest name.

Hee hee.

Cute!! My son voted at school yesterday, and voted for McCain, I didn't know he knew either of them either, when I asked him why? he said because Obama say's he is going to change, and I like everything the way it is!!

I hope your little one enjoyed voting today! And wouldn't it be nice if the President of the church and the President of the US was the same! (both being Monson of course...not the other way around!!)

BTW This is my first stop on your blog and it has to be my favorite name of a blog EVER!! The "If you give..." books are our FAVORITES!

If only the prophet and president was the same person, if only.

I was starting to get paranoid with everyone going private and thought... oh no....I hope Erin is still "open" reading. YAY. You are.

Love how the boys were able to watch a movie on the IPOD. I was able to go alone and when I walked in, no line...when I left, line out the door. Talk about impeccable timing.
