On the Seventh Day of Christmas I Posted on My Blog

SEVEN HUNDRED CHRISTMAS SONGS

Okay, so I'm not actually posting 700 Christmas songs on my blog. I'm just going to talk about the nearly 700 (676) Christmas songs I have on my iPod. I am a bit of a Christmas song collector. Okay, I'm a Christmas music packrat. If I hear it, I have to buy it. Raffi? I've got it. Mo Tab? Yep. The Osmonds and Carpenters? Check. Kenny G? Uh huh. John Denver and the Muppets? Christina Aguilera? Tchaikovsky? All of the above. If you don't already know, iTunes has two free Christmas song downloads every week between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I'm all over that.

My favorite Christmas song ever? O Come O Come Emmanuel. (And how lucky am I that this week's free download off of iTunes is this song by Enya?) I have 10 versions of this song on my iPod, and my very favorite version of this song is by Linda Ronstadt...I know! It is such a simple version, which is what I like best about this song - being able to listen to the words and not being interrupted by instruments and such.

My second favorite Christmas song is Carol of the Bells, and my favorite version of this song was a free download off of iTunes last year, by The Bird and The Bee. I could listen to it over and over - and I have.

My favorite Christmas album of all time is Jingles by Voice Male. I love this album! I listen to it in the summer, just because I love it so much. Voice Male is an a capella group (I'm sure Kelly from Waiting for a Little Vlachster just clicked away; she hates a capella) who totally make fun of themselves and have fun while singing. Click right here to see their two Christmas albums and hear snippets of their songs - click on the Jingles 2 album (the red one) and click on song #12, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. One of their daughters sings the echo parts - it is so cute. I love both albums, but #1 is my favorite. They are LDS (Mormon), and their song Tractin' in a Winter Wonderland is hilarious. Most of them are from Logan, Utah, and I was a couple of years behind two of them in high school, but I never actually knew any of them. And they didn't pay me to write this review. I just adore their music.

What songs and/or albums do you love, that I will need to purchase to feed into my holiday cheer?

Well, you already know all the ones I love, since you gave them to me. Sarah M., Carpenters, Anne Murray, but I also have a cd that friends burned for us two years ago for Christmas, and it is so good!

I really like Little Drummer Boy

I love the music from A Charlie Brown Christmas. We have quite a few Christmas cd's here but that one gets played the most (no mp3 players her...we're behind the times).

My husband absolutely loves Handel's Messiah in German.

676 definitely qualifies you as a collector. Had no idea that some of the artists you mentioned, e.g. Raffi and Linda Ronstadt, had their own holiday recordings. Made me laugh. :)

I believe that great minds must certainly think alike. I am planning to post tomorrow about our family's latest and greatest holiday favorites. I'll be curious to know whether there is anything on the list that you do not already have.

Stay tuned...

If you have 700 songe, I am sure you have all of the albums I have. But I do love the Oakridge Boys Christams Album (the first--the have a second one called Christmas Cookies, which I'm not as fond of). And John Denver and the Muppetts, and Johnny Matthis (because it reminds me of Christmas at my dad's). I like the song "all I want for Christmas is you" by Mariah Carey (not generally a fan). But my all time favorie album is Bing Crosby's White Christmas. Classic.

I also love Voice Male. I love the Manheim Steamroller cds, Gloria Estefan, Maria Carey,The Chipmunks, Forgotten Carols, Roger Whitaker, Bing Crosby, etc I guess I am almost as bad as you. I have many Christmas cds. I love Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers cd " A Christmas to Remember". I don't think it is too country but great songs. Great music at this time of the year.

Okay, now I totally get cool-by-association points. The vocal percussionist (one of the basses) and founder of VoiceMale, John L. is my cousin. (I KNOW! How cool am I?)

They sang at his reception so his new wife's family (not from the U.S.) could hear them. And a couple of years ago he called last minute to give us free tickets to their Thanksgiving Point concert. WAY FUN. And I agree--they have an awesome album (actually, several awesome ones). My 6 yr old loves the Rudolph song and laughs herself silly every time she hears the daughter doing her thing.

700?!?!? That's insane!

I have a little confession. Another one, I guess. I am not a big fan of Christmas music. I was telling my coworker that if I have to hear Feliz Navidad one more time, I will stab someone. I get SOOOOOO sick of all the songs!!

I am so bad about putting music on my iPod (well, mine is not an iPod actually...).

We are an old school CD family. I got Harry Connick's new Christmas album this year and I love it. I also got Kristin Chenoweth's new Christmas album, and there are a few great ones on there, but it was kind of disappointing.

my mom LOVES voice male. we have all their cds.

do you leave your christmas songs on your itunes library all year? i always listed to shuffle, and don't like hearing christmas songs in june, so i don't add my christmas music to itunes. i miss having it on there in december, but don't want to re-load it every year.......

Wow, I remember Voice Mail. Funny! I never owned any of their stuff, but I think I saw them perform here and there. I was in a similar girls group (but it wasn't a capella) - but we only recorded one song, then our lives got too crazy to finish an album (I feel like this makes me sound really super lame - oh well). Anyhoo, we still sing together sometimes, and it makes us happy.

I'm super, duper picky about the Christmas songs I like, but it's been really fun this year watching my kids enjoy the old FM100 "All Christmas music, all the time".

Happy Christmas iTuning!

Voice Mail is apparently playing up here in SLC. I see their billboard every day on the freeway, but haven't paid much attention.

I didn't know about free Christmas downloads! Why didn't you post that earlier?! I've missed out of many songs...

My favorite song is I Heard The Bells on Christmas Day. Particularly love the 3rd & 4th versus.

Wow! Seven HUNDRED Christmas songs on your ipod? I'm truly impressed! I love the Christmas Shoes song. It's a tear jerker, but reminds me of the beauty of service.

I remember you posting last year about the free download for the Carol of the Bells and I went I got it too. It is such a great version. My new favorite this year is the Celtic Woman Christmas CD. Do you have that one? and to add to the list...Garth Brooks! I love the big band sound of it.

Celine and Mariah are good ones! I saw that in a comment as I was scrolling down. Anyway, I listened to some of those songs from Voice Male and I love the Chipmunk song! ha ha.. they sound JUST like them!

I love that you have so many Christmas songs. To the "haters" out there, you just have to pick your own songs you like. The radio always picks a few cruddy songs and plays them over and over and over again.

I love Julie Andrews and James Taylor's Christmas albums. And my favorite Christmas song is What child is this? So pretty and calming.
