Random Ramblings

Does anyone actually know the words to the song "On Top of Old Smokey"? My boys got a lap harp from Santa for Christmas, and it includes this song. Every time Ethan plays it I sing in my head "On top of spaghetti, all covered with cheese, I lost my poor meatball, when somebody sneezed." Are there real words to that song??

I had my iPod set to random and plugged into my living room speakers so I could listen to music while I cleaned the kitchen. My kids were happily playing together in the playroom (this is a more frequent occurrence as they get older, thank goodness). The song "Womanizer" by Britney Spears started, and I heard a giant "WOO HOO!" and a squeal come out of the playroom. I laughed but didn't think much of it. When the song ended and another one started, Ethan came out of the room and asked, "Mom, will you start that song again? It's my favorite song of all time."

Uh oh.

Last month my husband and I started watching The Office on Netflix. We had never seen an episode, but Netflix has the first four seasons on their "watch instantly" page. We started with season one, and watched two (or three or six) episodes every night after the kids went to bed. It completely and totally grew on me. I would find myself thinking about it during the day, and wondering what would happen with Angela and Andy (and/or Dwight), and what Michael would do to be a @%$& on the next episode. My favorite scene ever, the one where I laughed so hard I cried? The one where Jan breaks up with Michael, and he plays the song "Goodbye My Lover" on his computer, but he's too cheap to buy the entire song so he just listens to the free 30 second snippet over and over. That one scene gave me pure joy (if you can get joy from a tv show). And my favorite episode ever was the dinner party that Jan and Michael had at their house, and everyone was supremely uncomfortable the entire night. Who puts a roast that takes 3 hours to cook in the oven as soon as the guests arrive? And the room full of candles that Jan is selling. Oh my gosh. Hilarious. I haven't enjoyed a show like this since Friends. I miss Joey and Phoebe. Sniff. (Kelly saw Phyllis from The Office at the LAX airport on her way to Cambodia, and got a picture with her. Click here to see it. She also spent Christmas in Cambodia and Thailand. The pictures on her blog are beautiful.)

I read a book last week. That is relatively amazing because ever since I began blogging like a fiend I had to cut something. Anyway, I read The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. I cried at least 12 times. I have two favorite quotes or sections of the book: Chapter 36 is called Look for the Best in Everybody. His friend told him, "If you wait long enough, people will surprise and impress you." I have definitely found that to be true. My other favorite was from chapter 59 (page 197). He says, "As I see it, a parent's job is to encourage kids to develop a joy for life and a great urge to follow their own dreams...So my dreams for my kids are very exact: I want them to find their own path to fulfillment...Kids, don't try to figure out what I wanted you to become. I want you to become what you want to become." Even if you saw the lecture online, read the book anyway. It is amazing.

Did you know that you can "force" Google Reader to pull up your blog, so that it won't take nine hours anymore? Everyone may already know this, but Vanessa and Stephanie pointed it out to me. If you subscribe to your own blog, you can pull it up in Google Reader, hit "refresh," and voilà! It shows up on everyone's Google Reader. Fun little fact...thanks Vanessa and Stephanie!

My poor little three year old threw up the night before last. For the third time in three months. He can't afford to lose that much weight! Sweet little guy. He still wanted to play Monopoly, though. (So we did.)

I heard a quote once that said something about only sweeping the corners of your kitchen, because the middle kind of takes care of itself.

Does someone want to come and sweep my corners? Because it is my least favorite of all of the chores. P.S. I might be willing to do your least favorite chore in return. What is your least favorite chore?

The only words I know to that song are the same words you know. We must've learned them together or something. I would sweep your corners ANY DAY if you would come fold my mountain of laundry. I HATE LAUNDRY!

Just SO said...

LOL at Womanizer being his favorite song of all time! I remember distinctly driving along in the car and my three year old singing along with 1985 by Bowling for soup.

I think I would really like The Last Lecture.

I've only seen bit and snippets of The Office. It's probably a good thing we don't have a dvr.

Kristen said...

I'll sweep your corners if you clean my windows.
I hope your 3 year old feels better soon!
Britany does have a good voice

On top of old Smokey, all covered with snow, I lost my poor ... That's all I know.

The Office is most definitely the best sitcom since Friends. Isn't it funny how we get plugged into a show and then the characters seem like they're our own real friends? Wait, is that just me?

Goob said...

Erin, do not sweep the corners! Did you see the picture on my blog of what happens when you sweep the corners? LOL

rachel said...

I love the last lecture too! Best book I've read in a long time. I love how his parents raised him. It totally inspired me to rethink what I am doing with my kids. I miss Friends too- isn't the office great?
If you ever have a chance go to NBC.com and get on the office website- it has some more hilarious stuff on there (like Angela and Andy's gift registry and wedding planner :)

I love Womanizer and I hate to clean toilets!

Is that a random sentence or what?

Anonymous said...

I'll sweep your corners if you get my bathrooms. I also hate grocery shopping, mopping and window cleaning. You have anything else to swap?

I love the Office. There was one Season in there where I thought it was dying, but they've kicked it back up. I almost can't watch, sometimes, I am so embarassed for Michael. Did you see the dinner party episode? Oh my funny!

Oh, and those are the only words I know to on top of old Smokey. I'd assume there are real ones. Have you googled it?

I finally finished Season 4 of The Office last week. I got it for Christmas. I am WAAAAY behind the curve.

My favorite scene was when Pam and Jim go to the beet farm and they are pulling up in the car, and Mos is running to greet them. I almost peed my pants. I can't believe I have missed out on watching this show.

And they take down the Season 5 episodes online, so I can't watch them yet.

Lara Neves said...

I only remember the first verse, but I have learned the whole "real" song (although the spaghetti one is so much more popular it could be argued that it is the real song at this point).

"On top of old Smokey, all covered in snow, I lost my true lover, for courtin' too slow..."

As I remember it the entire song is kind of how you can't trust men, cause they'll kiss you but it's all a lie. Or something. Google it. I'm sure the answer lies therein.

I've only seen a few episodes of the office, and I guess it's not my kind of humor, because I never really thought it was so funny.

I loved reading the Last Lecture. I need to re-read, excellent book...such an inspiring man.

Finally, I hate cleaning bathrooms. I would happily sweep your corners for you if you want to come do toilets.

Love The Office!! Especially Jim's looks to the camera.

I don't sweep my corners. I suck them with the vacuum hose.

B said...

Priceless. I love the "it's my favorite song of all time!" And are there any REAL words? Doesn't matter if there is because I'd say 99% of people think the song is all about spaghetti even if it's not.

Annette Lyon said...

I think I used to know the real words. But now I have the spaghetti version stuck in my head. Thanks for that.

LOVE the office too.

And sweeping is my most hated chore as well. Why? I can't figure it out, but I hate it.

Jillene said...

I only know On Top Of Spaghetti too. Kind of funny!!

Womanizer and your son = HILARIOUS!! I love it!!

My least favorite chore is LAUNDRY. I hate, hate it!!

Jessica said...

We love the office at our house! I was so disapointed that it was a rerun last night. I need to know what happens next!

I also hate sweeping. I hate floors in general. I do it so infrequently that when I finally did, I took pictures and posted it on my blog. How sad is that?!

Jilly Bean said...

Your random thoughts are fun. I just don't sweep my floors at all. :)

Sarah Mickalson said...

I hate cleaning bathrooms. I'll sweep your floors, I do it at least 4 times a day around here (thanks to the nice white floors we have...who puts white floors in the kitchen? Spec homes...)

carrhop said...

We love The Office--and you're right--there are definitely moments that just have me laughing so hard I cry!

Loved leafing through your ramblings!

Blessings!

Thanks for the google reader tip. I guess I should have read through my google reader posts before posting that last post on the BSU!

I will sweep your corners, if you will take out my garbage..

Adrienne said...

I miss friends too. I used to hate sweeping before we moved but now we have our home vac system. (i use it at least 3 times a day with messy kids!) I'll trade you for dishes. I can cook all day but when it comes to cleaning it up...UCK!

Sabrina said...

Those in fact are the correct words to On Top of Old Smokey.

I heart the Office. Micheal is my favorite. You know why? He makes me feel uncomfortable. When you can watch a show and feel totaly uncomfortable and sorry for the people, then you know it's a good one!

Whitney R said...

We also have gotten into the Office and watch multiple episodes a night. Were on season 4 and starting to DVR the current season. We'll watch the episodes we missed online and then start where we left off with the one's we've recorded. I love that I knew each episode you were talking about! The show is hilarious and I also wonder what's going to happen!!

My 5 year old is now singing songs from Rock Band 2. We are so proud!

I have too many chores that I don't like doing. Or rather I don't mind doing housework, I just wish it would stay clean for longer.

I enjoyed your ramblings.

Kaylynn said...

I love The Office. I also watch in on Netflix. Another of my favorites is As Time Goes By. It is a British comedy. They have all 9 seasons of it on Netflix instant. I like your rambling page!

Jen said...

Okay, so I made a comment and it didn't stick. I'll try again...I must admit I love "Womanizer" too! My daughter and I rock out to it on the iPod. Steve Carrel is one of my fave actors. Gotta love The Office. I loved him in the movie "Dan In Real Life". THat's a must-see movie. Have a wonderful weekend! Happy Friday to you.

I adore your random ramblings. Here are my comments, also in random order.

1) Should I be worried that currently my favorite song is Womanzier, just like Ethan? How old is your boy exactly? My fear is that he is not 25.

2) The Last Lecture is truly an inspiring read. You can also download the lecture as a pod cast. Even more moving to hear Randy Pausch narrate his story.

3) My least favorite chore...hmmm...that would probably have to be folding the laundry. I actually had to push aside two very large mountains of clean clothes in order to get to my computer this morning.

Priorities....

On top of old Smokey, all covered with sand, I shot my poor teacher with a green rubber band.

That's all I got, sorry.

My least favorite chore? Hmmm, there are sooo many to choose from. Surprisingly, it's not bathrooms. I'd have to say, dusting, cleaning baseboards and walls, windows, cleaning inside the oven. The deep cleaning stuff.

Reeders said...

Hmmm... least favorite chore. Dishes!!!
I just have to tell you how much I love The Office too. I did the same kind of thing and didn't watch them on tv but ended up renting all of them and that show is the best around, I swear! My favorite episode? The Office Olympics. I love that one. There are so many favorite things that I can think of but I must say that two of my favorites are 1. When Jim tries out the Pavlov's Dog theory by handing Dwight a piece of gum every time he turns off his computer and 2. When Jim steals some of Dwight's letterhead and plays the prank where Future Dwight has been sending faxes to present Dwight telling him "Do NOT drink the coffee today!!". Just had to share! I love that show!

Jules AF said...

How can you like the dinner party episode? It's so awkward, it hurts me.

Meladie said...

I love The Office too! We've watched it ever since it started and I just can't get enough of it. Hilarious. Oh, and we actually OWN that book...never read it though. But, you've inspired me. I'm going to read it now.

I sing that On Top of Old Smokey to my kids all the time when they're in the bathtub, for some wierd reason. They think a meatball rolling off the table and onto the floor and then rolling out the door is hilarious.

I had to laugh when I read your random thought on your kids liking "Womanizer"!! My daughter always wants to listen to my iPod and she loves Fergie, which concerns me because she uses "bad words" in her songs. But my daughter knows better and tells me "Fergie just said a bad word...does her mother know?"

Found you on BSU! I love your blog!

That Girl said...

I love that I'm back, cuz I can read YOU.

Also I must confess that after blogging that I was out of it with the sitcom world, I too watched The Office. And laughed so much I snorted. A lot.

I LOVE the Office. My hubby and I caught up last summer on Netflix...and would watch 7-8 episodes a day...but it was well worth it!

I also LOVED The Last Lecture. It is so inspirational and gives you hope that there are genuinely good people in this world. I let my friend borrow it who has 3 kids and she is loving the advice!

we just started watching the office like that too, the 2nd season is more sexual so we FF a lot but it's pretty hillarious

I love the Last Lecture! He was such an inspiration to so many people. I liek the idea about the corners... it would take less time too. LOL about Womanizer...

I love The Office. Love actually isn't a strong enough word.

Thanks for the Google tip! I didn't know that!!

And I do know the words to On Top of Old Smokey. I can sing it for you if you like! ;D

Kate said...

We actually watched the first season of the Office and it was ok but not my kind of show to watch, I guess.
I will sweep for you any day if you come and do my laundry. It has always been my least favorite chore. I guess it is good that my husband helps me with it every week because I HATE it.
That stinks about your little boy and throwing up. It is amazing how they still want to do what they enjoy and are afraid to miss it.
Have a great weekend.

Love your blog even more!

Aaaaaand now that you confess to loving The Office, we can officially be blogging bffs!

And aaaaaaaannnnnnnddd, since I also own the book whose quote above is my mantra, (only slightly different at the end), I am hooked on your blog. The gem I was looking for!

On top of old smokey, all covered in grass, I saw a bald eagle, a scratchin his ... don't be mistaken, don't be misled, for that bald eagle, was scratchin his head.

I find that the chaos theory is a great thing to use when it comes to your least favourite chores ... everything eventually reverts to chaos anyway, so why not just leave it to get that way!

Hey Erin! I just came over to remind myself about the trick to get my post to show up on Google Reader. I tried it today and it didn't work. Has it ever worked for you? Just wondering.
