What's The Difference Between a Cow and a Pig?

I was so excited. For Conference Saturday, I was planning on making a knockoff crockpot recipe for Cafe Rio's pork barbacoa. I went to the grocery store and bought all of the ingredients, and I was really happy because the roasts were on sale for a really good price. In fact, I bought two! I got home, pulled out my recipe, read through the ingredients, and then it hit me.

I bought beef roasts.

This is pulled pork.

I am always doing this! And I'm not kidding. Last week, Christian told me he was almost out of shampoo. I went to Wal-Mart, went straight to the shampoo aisle, and went straight to his preferred brand. I read all of them, because I wanted to make sure I got the right one. I purchased the moisturizing one, instead of the one with volume. I put it in the shower as soon as I got home, mentally praising myself for being so on the ball and doing this right away. Instead, three days later, he asked, "Hon? Did you notice that you got me shampoo AND conditioner in one?" Aw crap. We have been over this so many times. He DOESN'T like conditioner. I know that. I spent extra time making sure I chose the right shampoo. And I STILL got the one with conditioner.

Other things I've purchased in the past that I was positive was the "right one" but still wasn't? Gatorade (I thought I purchased regular, but instead I purchased diet), night time cough syrup (when I specifically thought I was getting the daytime one so I could actually drive), deodorant (knowing which brand my husband prefers and still getting the wrong one). The list goes on.

Why do I do this? I'm pretty sure half of the reason is because I hate shopping. My goal is to "go in, get stuff, and get out." The other reason must be because I am just not observant enough. Or maybe I'm just lazy. Do any of you ever do this? Do you have any suggestions for me? Does anyone want to go shopping with me and hold my hand throughout the entire experience?

You and my husband should NEVER shop together (not that you would..)

He is famous for doing the same thing...

I DO, however, always appreciate his attempts. As long as he stays away from doing laundry, I'm okay.

Me? I'm famous for ALWAYS forgetting at least one or two things that we need...thus having to go back within a day or so. Maybe that's why I hate Walmart so much!

I think you should still try the beef. What could possibly go wrong?

You must be my long lost sister!
I do stuff like this ALL the time.

In fact, my husband has taken over the purchasing responsibilities for all his shampoo and deodorant as well as any needed medicine. I can't seem to get it right no matter how hard I try.

The other crazy thing I do is go to the store specifically for one thing (with a few minor ones on my list as well) and then forget the one thing I went to the store for in the first place!

Beef will still be good. I do both all the time and love the beef.

When ever my husband complains about my skill at some sort of 'wifely' duty. I just sweetly tell him that he is right and that he would probably do a much better job than I do and I would be thrilled if he just took over that 'duty' from now on.

He complains very little now :)

I think the beef will be just as good as the pork. I can't say I have the same issues, but then again, as long as my husband does not have to go with me, he is thrilled with whatever I get, especially if I get a good deal.

I do this ALL THE TIME. I blame ADD.

What a relief to find someone who does the same thing! I swear my husband must think I've got a screw loose for how many times I come home with the wrong thing--but took extra time making sure it was right. Drives me nuts!

I do this all the time. And I mean all the time. I recently bought Classic Beige color foundation (my normal color is Light Ivory) and then wondered why my face looked orange. I think it happens because, generally, I'm at the store with my kids and they really distract me. I have to spend a lot of time diffusing fights and refusing to buy stuff. It makes it really hard to focus. ☺

Awwww, Erin. That sounds frustrating! Let me know how the "Cafe Rio Sweet Beef" turns out.

By the way, I like the look of the blog. You figured out how to create your own header! Is this look going to stick around for awhile?

I do this too! I wonder if it's a mom stage? I'm liking the new look of your blog too! and the new Ethan/Aidanisms are funny! Isn't is fun to plan something good for conference? I want to make the Best Bites Chicken Tortilla Soup but just realized I used up the last of my chicken! Dilemma!

The funniest things have been happening lately, since I have had a hard time getting out and about my hubby has been doing the shopping and coming home with THE WIERDEST things, things I would never have thought to buy him. Like a box of "just bunches" from honey bunches of oats. Who knew!?!?

I volunteer. I love shopping.

James almost always gets fat free ice cream when he goes to pick it up. And he HATES it!

I've accidentally bought the regular Lubriderm instead of unscented several times, but my husband is MUCH worse about this than I am. For the first four weeks after my (now five-week-old) baby was born I had him do the grocery shopping and while I tried to be grateful, it was also quite a trial -- among other things, although we are a family of seven and I've repeatedly said we can't have too many eggs around, he CANNOT bring himself to buy an 18-pack; he is just sure it is too much and (horrors!) we will end up having to discard extra eggs (although this has NEVER happened) so he always gets just a dozen instead. And he brought home mocha ice cream the other day because he forgot it's coffee and thought it was a variant form of chocolate.

I have to admit that "lazy" and "unobservant" are adjectives that have crossed my mind to describe his approach to shopping when I'm captive to it, but if it makes you feel better, my husband's also a very smart man, so maybe people like you and him are just too busy thinking of more important things to buy the correct products.

I do that occasionally, but only when hubby runs out of something and calls me to remind me when I am already out. That wasy I have not had time to plan my shopping and so it throws off that part of the trip.

If I give hubby a note like "go pick up soda" he has occasionally picked up CLUB SODA instead of whatever soda pop is on sale. I have to give him very very specific titles of exactly what I want or it will be the wrong thing.

I have done that SO MANY TIMES!
But my mom did it recently. She was making whipped cream, but she accidentally bought heavy cream instead of whipping cream.

I'm super picky and I always buy exactly the thing I want. I'm so bad that I can hardly stand having Greg pick something up for me on his way home for work because he might (will) get the wrong brand of ketchup and choose onions that are too small. I'm awful. (I bet Greg would prefer for me to pick up the wrong things than to be so picky (I would use the word anal, but I HATE it).

I do this all the time. It is very frustrating for me and my husband. I used to love shopping. Then I had kids... and now I loathe it. I usually get the wrong thing and it really stinks. I do take a list with me, but it tends not to work. Sometimes I am nice and apologize. The other times I tell him if he wanted the right thing, he should have come with me. Mean, I know, but he never comes to the store with me so he kind of gets what he gets ;) I think praying to remember might be my only hope ;)

Oops! And I would totally go with you. I love helping people spend money :)

I totally get you.... I thought I was reading a post about myself. Don't try to change it, that will never happen.

This is when you learn to "go with the flow" Try the pork recipe with beef. What's the worst that could happen? OR, there is a really good recipe for pulled BBQ BEEF in Grandma's cookbook.

Yes, I really am commenting..... I know, amazing. However, I've been wanted to tell you how glad for you/jealous I am that you got to go to France. Sounds like you had a fabulous time. Yay!

Yeah, my special shopping challenge is that I always manage to forget at least one major ingredient that I need. Without fail. My husband just keeps his keys handy when I cook because he knows he's going to have to race out at a critical moment in my recipe to grab whatever I forgot. It's very annoying. Not him! The forgetting part.

Oh, and I like your sea horses.

We are such kindred spirits on this one. I could tell stories but I think I've blotted them out...

Are you kidding?? I shop with four--count them, four--children. I never get it right!

That's funny. I'm way too anal to not remember the details of what someone likes or wants. However, I may not notice a new haircut, or the color of someone's eyes. I think it comes down to your own priorities. Louie cares WAY less about all the tiny details than I do. He tries, and usually does pretty darn well, but I use a LOT of energy trying not to be bugged when he gets stuff totally wrong.
I'm sure Christian is much kinder and more patient than I (sigh).

This happens to me all. the. time. I'm not overly observant and I too like to get in and out. You are not alone in this.

I love shopping even for the mundane things, so I take my good ole sweet time. My hubby on the other hand, gets it wrong if I'm not with him. I've been known to send a picture with him, or he calls me from the aisle to make sure...

What is so crazy is that if I buy multiple items of something, I'll only get one wrong, or right. Like buying 3 boxes of brown sugar oatmeal for the kids and one of them is sugar-free (and therefore not as desirable to the non-dieting set in the house). I'm always doing that. If I buy just one of something, I'm usually okay. Go figure.

I have the same problem. I have started writing lists and then I lose the lists. Don't feel bad I think it is because life is so crazy.

Jessi said...

lists SAVE me. I am soooo like this it is not even funny. I make very detailed lists! Ha ha!

I hope you tried the beef. I make an awesome pulled roast (using beef) that we love. We do need to try it with pork sometime. And almost every time I go to buy a dress shirt for my husband I have to call him and ask what size his neck is. I finally saved a text message from him on my phone that tells me what size he wears. Now birthday surprises are more...um...surprising.
