Observations of Our Small Town

  1. The airport is not actually on Airport Road. It is 1/2 mile away from Airport Road on Aviation Way.
  2. The ditches to get in and out of driveways, grocery stores, etc are so low that you have to own a high clearance truck to not scrape bottom. We own a Honda Civic. The underside of our poor little Civic is getting eaten up.
  3. People ride/drive on the roads with four wheelers.
  4. In the middle of a dirt field, we saw a giant dump truck and a tractor with "For Sale" signs on them.
  5. The kite store is called Breakin' Wind.
  6. Only people who have lived here for a long time know what is being talked about when someone mentions "the valley." I have no idea what or where this elusive valley is.
  7. There is no mall. There is a Maurices. If you purchase a shirt there, you are guaranteed to see at least three other people in town wearing that same shirt.
  8. Your options for shopping are Wal-Mart, or...Wal-Mart.

I love Maurices!!! I use to shop their all the time when I lived in a small town in Idaho.

Me (aka Danielle) said...

Hey! I like Walmart.

..Okay, maybe not for everything. I'm not a huge Maurices shopper. But I imagine that Maurices is to some, like Kohls is to me!!

Theresa said...

I don't have a Maurice's here but if there is shopping there... I would love it!

Melanie Jacobson said...

I think having so few shopping options would eliminate some of the status nonsense of having just the right brand, wouldn't it? That might be nice.

I am living the small town life too. After a year or two I just couldn't stomach Wal-mart anymore so I drive 90 miles to the nearest Costco and Target once a month.

But you know what. I'm getting used to it. I don't know that I want to go back to the city.

Emmy said...

Sounds like Durango, CO. There was a "mall" there that had a JCPenny the size of well.. the kids section in most regular stores. So there was the option to drive 45 minutes to New Mexico or Walmart. Lucas would always seem to be wearing the same clothes as every other kid his age.

Barbaloot said...

How can it be so small and still have an airport? :)

Rachel Sue said...

You know, I kind of want to move to a small town. But this is making me reconsider a little bit. . .

Laurie said...

I think it's funny that it's not really THAT small, but still doesn't have a few normal stores - like Target! I guess most people just take the 45 minute drive once a month? Not sure.

Now Enterprise. THAT'S small!! Haha. :) Your options are driving South 45 minutes or driving East 45 minutes. :)

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAA Erin!!!!!!!!!!!! I love it! Except my town of 1000 people is smaller and we have to drive 35 miles to get to the WalMart and Maurices and everyone does and we all wear the same clothes too!! And I was dying about your Civic because we have the SAME car and ours is getting trashed too because the ditches and gutters are SO deep!!! Loved this post! Thanks for brightening my day in my boring ol' town!

Christa said...

I've driven through there several times and actually spent the night once. I went to the Shakespeare festival aroun 12 years ago. I had no idea it was so small there. I only went from my hotel to the show and back. I didn't see much else.

Kristina P. said...

No Target? Now I'm sad.

Just SO said...

I've never been to Maurices. The town I live in used to be a small town but no longer. I kind of miss the small town feel.

What about getting a lift kit put on your civic? That would rock.

jomama said...

Ditto. But I must clarify- the airport used to be on airport road, but they built a bigger one, thus the airport on aviation way. I've been here awhile and still unsure of what is and isn't "out in the valley". You forgot to mention going to restaurants that are inside of gas stations!! That's still weird to me.

Jillene said...

I drove by your small town on Wednesday and again on Saturday. I held up a sign that said, "HIIIIII ERIN!!!!" I am sure that you say it--being as your town is so small and stuff!!

Annette Lyon said...

Breakin' Wind? Please tell me you're kidding!

Becca said...

Gotta love Wal-Mart. Or better yet, gotta love the internet that makes Wal-Mart less necessary!

Lara Neves said...

The old airport is on Airport Road.

Amen about tearing up the underside of your car. I still forget to go super slowly after three years, and my minivan is just as low as a little car so it's often mad at me.

Joel just barely got the Breakin' Wind joke a few days ago. Or maybe he never noticed the store.

Isn't the valley just where we are? That's what I always thought. We are surrounded my mountains...just not so close on the north.

I've never even set foot in the Maurice's here in town. I do like Beall's and Christensen's though. Beall's actually has really good sales. And there's a cute shop called Abbey Rose on Main Street. She usually only buys one or two of each item, so you won't look like the rest of Cedar if you buy something there. More on the pricey side, though.

Breakin' Wind...who was the genious behind that name. Too funny. We live in a small town, but luckily we're only 20 minutes away from just about everything.

Anonymous said...

I have to drive almost 20 minutes just to get to the Wal-Mart by me. (Glad the blogger-Erin is surfacing in real life. If you want her to, I mean. ;o))

Love this post. I think I should do one about my crazy small but overcrowded town.

Diane said...

We have a Maurices in our town too. I have never been in it. We have the choice of Wal-Mart or K-Mart. I guess I am luckier than you!

But I live on an island.

susette said...

I didn't even know your town had an airport? Sweet.

What is it with Maurice's, WalMarts, and small towns? The little college town my in-laws live in has nothing except for Maurice's and WalMart!

Keyona said...

And...that is why I love living in the city! LOL!

Jessie said...

Yeah, we have only Smith's and Walmart, and it's a sucky Walmart- not fully stocked. I mean, it says "super", but it's not. Smith's is great, as always, but sometimes we have to cringe and enter said Walmart. We also have no mall. At least Cedar has a University, eh?

That's a funny list. I should do one, but I don't want to totally offend my one neighbor here who looks at my blog. She loves the Brig, and my list would have some, well...unflattering things about this town and its people. Should I refrain from my list, even though it could be a good laugh? Probably.
Your list, however, is not at all offensive, and is cute and funny. So don't think this remark is aimed at you. It's just me being random...again.

And it's a great place to live! Jake still talks about moving there someday so we can be closer to the cabin.

Jen said...

So true! I'd never noticed #1 before - that's pretty hilarious. For some reason, #5 drives me crazy. I think it's super tacky! And finally, where is this elusive valley? I've never even heard people talk about it!

Kate said...

This is all so true. I definitely miss shopping and having stores to do so. I have finally become used to it all but it is definitely small town.

I have never lived in a small town but just drive thru them to get to my parents in Salt Lake as we come up from AZ. We have our favorite restaurants we stop at in those small towns and our favorite hotel:) Someday we will have to try to meet up as I love your blog and your thoughts - I read it every day!

Anne-Marie said...

BUT.....you have IN-N-OUT! Seriously Erin!

Anne-Marie said...

......OK, so In-N-Out is in St. George. Still closer proximity than I. I always associate CC w/SG, like they are one in the same, when really. They are NOT!

he he.

My favorite is the name of the kite store. Very clever! That must be one VERY small town. But I love small towns.

rachel said...

I have moved SO MANY times in my life...but my absolute favorite places are small towns. I would like to live in one again actually. And the name of the kitestore...priceless!!

Anonymous said...

Sounds like good times. I'll stick with living pretty close to a mall though.

Angela Nazworth said...

Too cute..but not as small as my hometown---no airport---no Walmart---biggest store is a Dollar General and that's new---no stoplight... :-)

Julie P said...

Maurice's reminds me of going to college in Cedar City, UT - Maruice's, K-Mart and Wal-Mart were our only choices for shopping. It. Was. Sad. But I would LOVE to see a store called Breakin' Wind. I have the perfectly juvenile level of humor to appreciate that. :)

Julie P said...

Ok, I just read all the comments and figured out where you live...funny! I have to say I loved it there, and whenever we drive through, I think "ooh, maybe we could live here one day!"

Lee said...

We've been driving past some small towns, and I think I know what you mean!
We're going to Huntingdon, Tennessee.
They have a Walmart... a walmart...
a 2 movie movie theatre... and did I mention the walmart?
They're on 80 acres, if that's anything.

Christine said...

Lol!
I used to live in the valley!

And yeah, we did used to have a K-mart. But dang it was a crappy K-mart.

Sher said...

I'll have ask my sister what the valley means. But, I think she only lived in your town for like 1 year, but her hubby is from near there....

Andrea said...

Wow - you are so good at blogging. My favorite is #5.

Devri said...

lol I saw a lady driving her golf cart down the road today!

Cajoh said...

Perhaps they were hoping that the town would grow so big that the airport would have to expand and Airport road would be correct.

I've lived mostly in suburbia and the city, but my Aunt lives in Arkansas off a dirt road, so visiting there I got a feeling for what small town life was like.

Kimberly Vanderhorst said...

Sounds an awful lot like our town. Except we're WAY too small for a Walmart. =P Oh, and too small for an airport too, come to think of it . . .

Fiauna said...

Gotta love a small town. But, then again, there's a lot to be said for a bigger town--one with a Super Target.

PetEm said...

This made me laugh and there are some other things that I can think of to add to the list...

That Girl said...

Do you live in my husband's home town?

Oh wait, you have an AIRPORT. And SOME shopping. They have ... a church. And some houses. And a tractors with "for sale" signs on them.

And ohhhhhhhhh, how I love that town.

mCat said...

I did find a cool store there last time I happened to stay. It was at the south end of town and had high end brands. Maurice's doesn't sound familiar, but it could be that. Anyhoo, I liked it. Got some Estee Lauder perfume for a reasonable price.

And I feel really bad saying this, but I really, really dislike Cedar City.......I'm sorry for you.

tiburon said...

I could never live there! I don't know how you do it....
