Video Game Stupor

My boys love playing video games on the Wii. They would probably play all day, every day if I let them. So a few weeks ago I made three "video game tickets" for each boy. They get them each Monday, and when they want to play they have to give one to me. I usually let them play for 45 minutes to an hour each time.

So yesterday, they were playing Lego Indiana Jones. I got the game set up, and came into the room to check my e-mail. I was gone no longer than 10 minutes. Now, before I tell you what I saw when I came back in the living room, I need to set the stage a little. Ethan is really skinny. Like, he's in the 97th percentile for height and 20th percentile for weight. Even though he is six, he wears an 8 slim in pants. And Aidan - well, he walks around the room when he is playing video games. It's like he thinks he is in the game. As his character moves right, he moves right. As his character moves ahead, he moves ahead. You get the idea.

Okay, so I was gone for maybe 10 minutes. When I walked back in the living room, Aidan had his chest pressed up against the tv stand. He couldn't have been any closer to the tv. His nose was nearly touching it. And Ethan's pants had fallen down, and they were sitting around his ankles, and he was completely ignoring them to play the game.

For the next 30 minutes, I loaded the dishwasher, cleaned up the kitchen in general, and got dinner started. I had to say, "Aidan, step back" at least 15 times. And Ethan stood there with his pants around his ankles the entire time. I'm pretty sure neither one blinked the entire time.

Ahh, the joys of being a kid. And the joys of being a mom and seeing your kids do cute and amusing things like that.

Too funny!! It sounds like they have already learned the male trait of selective hearing :o)

That's hilarious! We've done the ticket thing around here for TV for quite a while and I'm a big fan of that system.

That is too funny. I think I might have to think of some sort of ticket system for TV around here. Probably for myself too. lol.

My kids get into that same zone while playing video games. I'm pretty sure that the house could be burning around them and they wouldn't notice.

I have tall, skinny kids too. There was a time when my youngest was in the 98th for height and only around the 10th (on a good day) for weight. He's gained a little weight and is now a little more proportinate. He's around the 20th%. Oh, how would it be to be so skinny?

I wonder if Adam would have to do that with me if we get a Wii. I want one!!!

My boys are playing Lego Star Wars as I type this. The positively lurve it. It's starting to drive me crazy, because they play it way too much. I know that as the mother I"m in control of that......I just need to step up and do something about it.

This makes me miss you guys, and our wii! James brought home the new super mario bros and when we put it in to play it, the wii was broken. I'm pretty sure Owen had jammed something in the slot, or otherwise rendered it useless, as the game wouldn't go in. We had to pack it up and ship it off to be fixed.

I can't wait till my kiddos will be entranced by video games. Movies just don't have that same power. Your kids, as always, are too cute. And good for you for cleaning the house!

I need to try that ticket thing. My 3 oldest boys can get on there way to much. I can tell it is time to stop when a fight breaks out!

HAHAHAHAHAH, that is TOOOOOOOOOO Funny!!! Make sure they *do* blink while they play! This is TOTALLY true but my hubby's cousin had a seizure because he didn't blink while playing. It's an actual warning on those games!! Isn't that nuts!?!?!? I'll never get it. :)

That's hilarious! I can totally picture it. My daughter is 6 and would play all day too if I let her. I'm totally gonna use the ticket idea, so great!

My sisters and I were all gamers when we were little (on our little Nintendo original) and we'd always say the same thing to my parents whenever they'd ask us to do something. So much so we still use it today. "But dad, this is my best game ever!"

Oohh, that made me laugh. So funny.
We don't own video games yet, so we're free and clear at least for another few years. I rocked video games as a kid, though, I must say.
I think you ticket idea is fantastic!

I might have to make tickets for Mark and I....time just seems to melt away when we're playing our wii. Apparently we are lacking in the self control department.

This is awesomely hilarious! I love it. I can totally see that happening.

Hilarious!!! I hear you about the skinnies. My son is eight: 87% height, 20% weight, size 7 slim (which are too short because he's too old for the size!)

I could see my husband doing this...

I love it! It always amazes me how easily the Y chromosome can slip into an alternate reality. LOL

This was ALL my boy wanted to Christmas and he's been playing it non-stop since. He's just like Aiden, hopping and running right along with his character. I say there's no way video games are an inactive activity when he's playing.

That cracks me up about Ethan's pants. Too funny!

Chloe is my wii addict here. She can play for 5 hours and not even notice. I'm glad school started so she can't do that anymore! (I let them over Christmas break because it was so cold that week.)

that would be funny to see! haha! Jarrett is obsessed with Mario Kart on the wii. He had to pee so bad he had tears streaming before I finally took the control and told him to go to bathroom. It was like he snapped out of it all of a sudden and looked up at me like he had NO idea he could just get up and STOP playing. ha ha.

I think there is a small secret part of me that can't wait until video games will help entertain my children while I get a moment to do something that needs to be done...
