A Food Post

I have been off of dairy for two full weeks now. I've been trying to figure out what makes Kaitlyn cry and curl her legs up to her chest. I have realized that spicy food is bad for her. Thankfully, I don't care for spice much anyway (I have extra sensitive taste buds and I almost prefer somewhat bland foods.). But I have decided that if I don't go to Costa Vida today and get a pork burrito, I am going to die. The craving has been boiling just under my skin for four days now and it HAS to be satiated. I'll just make sure to get the mild sauce instead of the sweet sauce. And I probably won't get cheese. Probably. But wait - will this curb my craving, or just make it worse? We'll find out!

I don't usually purchase broccoli, because who likes limp steamed broccoli? Certainly no one in my family - even when I try to disguise it by dousing it in butter and parmesan cheese. Well, I made this broccoli for dinner last night because broccoli happened to be on sale and I decided to be adventurous. Ethan ate half of the head of broccoli himself. I should have purchased twice as much because we all loved it so much it was gone before anyone had even touched their meatloaf or baked potatoes. Even Aidan, who is occasionally vegetable phobic, eyed the broccoli, licked it, and said, "Well, it licks good. And it smells good." Seriously, try this recipe. Now.

There used to be a restaurant in northern Utah called The Grapevine. Besides being the location of our second date (and the first time Christian told me he loved me!), it was the best restaurant in town. By far. I was happy to pay $28.00 for their salmon with red wine butter sauce because I was pretty sure it was manna. And my choice for dessert? Their almond marzipan torte. Well, just a few days ago David Lebovitz put a recipe on his website for almond cake that looks eerily like the almond marzipan torte I dream about. Will somebody please, please make this cake and save me a piece? I will love you forever.

Enough about food. I have to get ready to go to Costa Vida and swimming lessons, with all three kids in tow. (It takes at least an hour of planning and preparing to get out of the house with three kids.) Wish me luck!!

Califlower is also good roasted like that, I usually do a combo of both...though my boys still wouldn't touch it, maybe someday...

good luck with things, i hope you can start eatting dairy sooner rather than later! just be careful with broccoli, that can make a baby super gassy...as can califlower and cabbage. have you tried gripe water? thats helped my girls when they were uncomfortable and gassy. mylicon drops work well too. enjoy your costa vida!!

I LOVE marzipan. There is a bakery up here, called Schmidt's, and they make this marzoipan torte thing. So good.

Why is it that as soon as I swear I will lose weight and eat less, everyone starts blogging about food!

When we were trying to figure out what was bothering Claira I would walk inti the kitchen and burst into tears because I didn't know what to eat. Huge sympathies!

Mmmmm, broccoli. We love it. And you're right. If you steam it too long it's nasty. I steam it until it's just starting to get tender. I love it with garlic chips sauteed in butter poured over the top. Totally evil but soooo delicious (those florettes trap the garlic butter very well. Mmmmm). I like it roasted, too.

Good luck with your milk avoidance. Is it helping so far? I have cut way back on milk for Spencer. He is doing pretty well and eats more happily, but still has some rashes on his face. I'm not entirely sure it's from milk, so I haven't given up cheese. I just can't. And he's not uncomfortable, so I think I'm okay. (but I miss milk with my cereal, baked stuff and sweet breakfasts as well as yogurt.) Good luck with it all!

Costa Vida or Cafe Rio? .... is there even a difference?

Also, Christian said he loved you on the SECOND DATE? You kids moved fast. Haha.

PS- I just looked at that broccoli recipe, and that's the same thing I do for asparagus. I guess it's just a good way to cook veggies, period.

I'm totally trying the broccoli recipe. I've been trying to get the family to eat more fruits and veggies, and it's such a struggle!

(I don't DARE click on the almond cake recipe--that would be dangerous. I LOVE almond.)

love david lebovitz. love, love, love.

the secret to almost EVERY vegetable is to roast it. seriously. do this with chard, asparagus, squash, potatoes, whatever. roasting is king. it's worth doing even in july.

i never get any broccoli. my kids always eat it all. and i'm usually pretty happy to share.

Mmm, food. :)

We cook our broccoli for six minutes in a covered dish in the microwave and everyone in the family will eat it. Not that my kids aren't picky, they're just picky about weird things. Like, they all love artichokes. But my oldest hates pizza and ice cream.

I'm totally out of the loop. I am so sorry that you have had to go off dairy. That is so miserable. I hope you get things figured out quickly.

Brocolli is my favorite! And Kanoa's. In fact, I went to HIgh school in Carlsbad with a girl named, "Bambi Brocolli". Random comment, eh?

Def going to have to try that. Sorry about the dairy...the things we do for our babies.

Have fun wrangling the three kids. I'm learning what life is like with three and still making adjustments. Fun. And crazy making. But fun.
