I was flipping channels yesterday (all 20 channels we get for free with digital antenna) and stopped when something caught my eye on the Untamed Sports channel, of all channels. There was a show on called Kids Cooking For Kids. I called my boys in to watch, and they sat mesmerized for the entire half hour. The show has two twin boys, probably around age 11, talking about the importance of cleanliness and safety in the kitchen, and making two recipes step by step. Watching this show made my boys even more excited to cook with me. Now I just need to perfect my skills in patience when flour gets dumped on the floor or when pieces of egg shell end up in the bowl.

Kaitlyn was blessed at church on Sunday. I was telling my mom how I had meticulously washed both of my boys' blessing outfits, folded them and put them in gallon sized plastic baggies, and put them in my cedar chest, and how I planned on doing the same with Kaitlyn's dress. Then my mom informed me that plastic actually causes material to deteriorate more quickly, and that the best way to keep clothing for a long time is to purchase a plain white, 100% cotton pillowcase and store your clothing items in that. And here I thought my OCD with handling my childrens' blessing outfits was helping me. Hmmm, maybe I should get my wedding dress out of the plastic covering it is in...

That show sounds great. I love to watch cooking shows too.
The good news is that it depends on the type of plastic--and gallon bags are actually pretty safe. It's the plastic dress bags that can really damage material. Like my wedding dress that's not so white anymore. Grrr.
Hmmm, good tip. Thanks, Erin. Are you going to post pictures of Kaitlyn's blessing day??
Letting my kids cook is something I really struggle with. A strainer over top of the mixing bowl to catch egg shells works wonders though.
I'm suddenly scared to look at my wedding dress...yikes!
Interesting thing about the blessing clothes. Both of my girls were blessed in the blessing dress that my mom made for me when I was a baby and it has always been stored in plastic and looks perfect still. So is this like a hundreds of years thing or is my dress special?
I try to cook things with Keira sometimes but I have a hard time being patient too. My mom cooks with her all the time and has infinite amounts of patience. Hopefully she will learn how to cook one way or another.
That cooking show sounds fantastic! I think it's great that you are trying to get your boys to learn to cook--I wish I had done more cooking as a child, maybe I would be better at it now!
What's the difference between untamed and tamed sports? Are there two different channels...?
All you need is a pillow case for storage? That's good to know---cuz some of the clothing storage specialty things are expensive!
My kids in the kitchen = disaster! I did not know this about plastic...
You're so cute.
I also have very little patience with flour on the floor and kid-egg-cracking. I get so uptight. How did I get so impatient? My mom is the most patient person in the world - I did not inherit that.
Anyway, yeah, plastic is bad news. I also have my wedding dress still in the plastic bag, knowing full well it's bad for it. Oops.
I've been replacing all our plastic dishes lately with kid-friendly corelle and such - because plastic makes me nervous in general for food things.
I'll bet Kaitlyn looked lovely! I've yet to have the sweetness of a baby in a blessing DRESS! What fun.
I had no idea about the plastic bags. Good tip!
Wow! Are you sure these were real 11 year old boys? Not computer generated or maybe just small women in drag? I did a lot of cooking at that age but never with any concern about cleanliness!
Boys cooking on tv? That is awesome - I can see why kids would love that!
Awww blessing day - so special. I have no idea how to preserve white materials - I'm so helpful but appreciate your mom's 2 cents :D
Hmmm...my girls were all blessed in the same dress. But it's stored in a plastic dress bag. I suppose I'd better figure something better. Thanks!
So neat that our babies were blessed on the 4th of July. I want to see pics!
Thanks for all the great tips.
Thanks for the tip .. my boys blessing outfits are in plastic too, Guess I'm headed to get some 100% cotton to store them in!!

I am going to have to find that show for my kids. I have put them to work - they each have one night a week where they are responsible for dinner. They plan the meal - get the groceries and prepare it.
I am sure a little kitchen cleanliness would go hand in hand!
Thanks :)
