Oh. My. Word.
It's called One Second After, written by William R. Forstchen. The fictional story is set in a small town in North Carolina. I have been sitting here for WAY too many minutes (I have a baby I am ignoring in the other room) trying to figure out how to describe this story to give it justice, and I'm pretty much at a loss. Here is the premise: our enemies have launched a nuclear bomb of some kind way up into space, which sends an electromagnetic pulse across the entire country, frying everything that has a computer or electronics of ANY kind. All electricity is knocked out; any car made post-1980ish dies. This is where the story starts, and then it unfolds by explaining how everyone lives (or more likely, dies) as a result.
Just imagine what it would be like to not have electricity for a year (the book ends a year after the EMP occurs). No refrigeration. No way to heat a home. No way to restock the grocery store shelves. The list goes on and on. And the scary thing is that there is a foreword and an afterword that both say this is a very real possibility in our world, and our society would fall apart as a result of it. Yikes, big time.
Our church has been telling us to have a year's supply of food for many, many years. I have been slowly working on mine but wow, I am half tempted after reading this book to go into debt to bulk up my food supply. And water. And toothpaste. And toilet paper. And medications.
Have you read this book? Do you have a year's supply?

Wow, what an interesting concept. And scary! Sheesh. I would really like to read the book. No, we don't have pretty much any supply. We could last maybe two or three weeks. We keep meaning to. . . (and have started always buying two or three of something, but then I usually don't buy it again until we've almost run out, so that doesn't help much. . .)
I have no idea if I have a years supply, but I do have a pretty good one. My buy lately is TP. I would hate to go without that!
I've never even of heard of that book. Does it have Lindsay Lohan going to jail?
And I have about 5 minutes worth of food. It's not going to be good.
I've never heard of that book either.
Oo, TP is a great one. I need do that.
I think I have a good supply of grains - but only an electric grinder. The grains were Christmas gifts, so thanks to my parents and grandparents. We have a small supply of extra water - probably several days worth, and some way out-dated 72-hour kits. I just canNOT get myself to remember food storage stuff. I know I should... Perhaps I should read that book if for the sole purpose of motivating me to start doing better.
Yeah, I suck at food storage. But when my mom and grandma were here they couldn't stop talking about a book that had changed their food storage lives. It's called "I dare you to eat it" and it's all about incorporating your food storage staples into your menus now. For instance, my mom cooked crack wheat in the crock pot, then added it to almost everything we ate. I was suspicious when she put it in the taco meat, but I couldn't even taste it! And it filled me up! I was full after only 1 taco!
I just might have to track that book down....sounds kind of interesting. We're getting better with our food storage. We probably have a couple of months worth of food. It's better than nothing, but we're really trying to bulk it up a bit.
Jessica Alba starred in a television series in 2000 called Dark Angel based on the same concept. I didn't enjoy the second season so much, but the first season was great. This is a series that, ten years later, I could definitely see again.
Fascinating concept. I sometimes get the feeling too, of just getting all my food storage at once, and then Splenda reminds me that we are counseled NOT to go into debt. Even for food storage. We just keep chipping away, every week adding to it as we can!
This stuff scares me. I believe this could happen. I have a good supply, but not a years worth. Going to TP now!
Scary scary stuff. I have about a 4 months supply at this point...not quite gonna cut it I guess.
On the bright side, I have about a 5 year supply of clothes...so that's good, right? :)
Sounds like a good book.... I would recommend another... called Alas Babylon.. by Pat Frank.... EXCELLENT read..... and it goes into something similar... makes you think of many new things to add to the food supply... lol..
Yes we have a 3-6 month supply on the trailer we pull behind the rv.. and then another few months worth in storage.... we have been using it here and there and are in need of restocking for sure!
Thank you for warning me not to ever ever read this book. I already worry enough.
That is scary stuff. I don't know if I want to read about it when the world is kind of scary for real right now.
My food storage comes and goes. I hope if anything hits it is when it is full.
Very Scary! It definately can happen but I hope it never does. I know people that predict or think that will be how the world (as we know it) will end. I am not even close in my food storage.
I just ordered it from the library - thanks for the tip! :)
I read just the concept of this book and then stopped, because it completly stresses me out. I lay in bed and even knowing the topic stress myself out. SCARY... So much anxiety.
I'm working on the years supply. WE love Saratogtradingcompany.com. All freeze dried meals with a 30 year self life and stuff that we might actually eat. What would I do with eat.
Well, I was suspicious when she put it in the taco meat, but I couldn't even taste it! And it filled me up! I was full after only 1 taco! thanx for posting.
I hadn't heard of that one - but I am going to have to check it out!
Thanks for the recommend!
