Nightmares

I don't watch scary movies. Even if I close my eyes for 3/4 of the movie, it will give me nightmares. I watched The Prestige, which was billed as "suspense," but with its horrible, horrible ending, it gave me nightmares for weeks. (I even had a nightmare about it a month ago, and I haven't seen that yucky movie for three years.)

Last night, I was reading an Entertainment Weekly. There was a page that listed readers' favorite horror movies. Number one was The Ring, and among others were Paranormal Activity, Saw, The Strangers, and a few I had never heard of. I thought, "Well, I can't watch these movies, but I am intrigued to find out what they are about." I ripped the page out of the magazine and planned to look them up on IMDB today. What harm could there be by reading what the movies are about?

Last night, I had a nightmare that there was a murderer who was dead in my attic, waiting to be buried. But then I found out that he was just playing dead, and was really going to kill my whole family. And it was my job to stealthily get my family out of the house and then blow it up to kill the murderer.

All because I thought about getting online to read the synopsis of a few scary movies. I think it's probably wiser to just STAY AWAY.

(P.S. I just Googled "nightmares" to have a picture to go along with this post, but that wasn't such a good idea. I might have nightmares tonight because of some of the pictures I saw.)

Over the top horror movies don't freak me out. It seems too fake and so it doesn't phase me. It's the stuff that real that's the most frightening to me. Like war movies, crime dramas. Oooo...scary.

My 12 year old son begs to watch horror movies and I warn him about nightmares. He will be allowed when he is 18. LOL

This post had me giggling, but only because I'm like you. I don't need that stuff in my head - I worry too much as it is.

This is funny. I can watch horror movies all day long, and be fine. And I've never thought of The Prestige as a scary movie.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. The last scary movie I watched was The Ring. It FREAKED me out. After that I realized "I don't have to do this to myself." and I have stopped watching them. I won't even watch the previews on TV.

Apparently you come by the fear of horror movies honestly! The last scary movie I watched was hmmm...it was before I married and that's been 35 years!

I hate scary movies too, but I LOVE (and own, and watch frequently) The Prestige. But it is pretty freaky.

I watched the ring and I am so sorry that I did. The ending really freaked me out and I had nightmares for about a week. I had to turn my back to my husband at night so that I was facing my side of the bed so that no one could "sneak up on me".

This post got me thinking about working at Blockbuster because this was absolutely my least favorite time of year to work there. I HATE scary movies and the trailer tapes during halloween were disgusting and horrible to say the least. Plus everyone was always asking me what scary movie they should get or wanted to describe to me why such and such movie was the best horror movie ever. My husband LOVES them and I made him give them up mostly because I said he couldn't watch R rated movies in this house which he thankfully gave up when he got baptized. Don't EVER read what Saw is about. You will have nightmares for years. I still do and I just watch the trailer over and over for a couple of years. I loved when the family holiday movie trailer tapes would finally show up at Blockbuster after Halloween. Best. Day. Ever.
Oh and I saw The Ring and will never make that mistake again.

Never saw the Prestige. It's funny though because I have nightmares too and I am so scared being home alone when I watch something scary. The Ring totally ruined me. HATE scary movies ever since. I never really liked them but thought they were fun. Yes, don't even look them up. Scary images. Yuck!

*giggling* I'm the same way with scary movies but I didn't find The Prestige scary at all.

Now if someone even TALKS about th Exorcist, I get all freaked out.

Scary movies never bothered me until I grew up. I used to love them, now I'm a huge wimp. But I have to say, I've never once had a nightmare about the scary movie. Freaky!
My nightmares are few and far between, but they're usually realistic, like choosing whether I want the bad guy to kill my husband or my child. Um...ick.

Anyway, I saw The Ring 7 years ago and it scared me to pieces. I hated it. But I loved the 6th Sense, which also totally scared me. I used to be obsessed with the X-Files, you'd think I'd be braver...

I LOVED The Prestige, though. Not scary at all, you silly!

I hated, HATED that movie!

I agree! I also think scary books can do the same thing. I am a reader and always have been. I remember reading The Shining when I was a Jr. in High School and I about jumped out of my skin!
I read a few more Stephen King, etc...but soon had to quit even reading the scary books.
Hope you have happier dreams tonight.

I don't remember The Prestige being scary...and my kids just watched it the other day!
I am not one to get scared after watching scary movies. I actually LOVE the thrill from the spine tingles! And then I never think about it again.

HOWEVER, there is ONE exception. The only movie to ever scare me afterward was The Grudge. Holy freaking crap. I couldn't sleep for months after seeing it, and my husband made fun of me. It was truly so awful. To this day, Neil will tease me by making these scary guttural noises that happened in the movie, and it will make me cry. SERIOUSLY make me cry like a baby.

Oh, and I thought The Ring was the dumbest movie ever. It didn't phase me at all...what does that say about me?!!

I'm as bad as you are! After reading your post last night I had a dream about giant tarantulas in my house!

I watched the of The Shining (tv version) when I was a teen because I had seen a couple other scary movies that didn't bother me too much because they weren't real, so I thought I could handle it. The Shining TERRIFIED me because it's about someone going psycho and, um, I know some people kind of like that. Borderline psycho. For years I had to be careful not to even think or talk about that movie if it was night or I was alone.

Unfortunately I don't have to watch scary movies to have scary dreams, though.

Umm....yeah....I totally can't handle scary movies.

Seriously "The Ring" was number one??? That was a lame movie. I want to see Paranormal Activity SOOOOOO bad but it's rated R, boo. I love suspenseful scary movies but not bloody scary movies. I want to go see the new M. Night movie Devil and there is one coming out called Catfish that I will be seeing. Sorry they give you nightmares.

Ah, the downside to having a vivid imagination! I have similar issues myself!

I am the same way. I never watch scary movies. I'll even have bad dreams and lay awake at night after seeing a disturbing story on the news.

p.s. Are you going to do GCBC this round? Would love to have you.

Me too! I hate watching TV in October because there are so many commercials for scary movies! Even the commercials freak me out, they shouldn't be allowed to show those!

I am the same way. I've been plagued with nightmares since I was a child, and like you, I tend to have more if I especially if I see something "frightening". I have been known to mute the television and close my eyes during previews for horror flicks. I can't stand to watch them.

The Ring is scary. Horror movies didn't use to bother me but now they do

Oh I LOVE you. I am also a huge scaredy cat.. (not that you are but I am) I used to LOVE scary movies but then one day.. it was no longer a good idea. I cried hysterically after seeing the Blair Witch Project. really. Oh AND Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Bawled like a baby for HOURS. Didn't sleep. Law & Order is one of my favorite shows and lately it gives me nightmares. I have been forbidden to watch it now. haha.

by the way.. I love this post but I mostly love that you googled a picture for nightmares and might now get nightmares from that. lol. :)
