Be Still My Beating Heart

In addition to collecting French cookbooks that I never use, I also have a huge passion for beautiful coffee table books. But, because I don't have a coffee table, my beautiful books sit in the front entryway closet. It's a travesty, really, but I do get them out from time to time and flip through the pages lovingly.

This isn't even all of my coffee table books, believe it or not. These are only my favorites.

My love for coffee table books began with the one in the bottom right corner, Splendeurs de la France. When we had French foreign exchange students stay with us in high school, one of them brought us that book. It's completely in French and I lovelovelove it. You'll notice the one above it is actually a cookbook. But the pictures are so beautiful, who would actually dare mar the pages with grease by using it to cook meals? (Hey, I don't think I counted this one when I discussed my cookbooks. I have ten French cookbooks!)

Christian and I were married in Hawaii, thus the Hawaii coffee table book. And the Scanlan art gallery in Park City, Utah is so breathtaking that I HAD to have the coffee table book (it was a birthday gift a few years back. Thanks, Ruth). The Celine Dion/Anne Geddes book was also a birthday gift (Kristina, sleeping babies posing in giant cups don't scare you, right?) The Great World Atlas was my grandma's, and she gave it to me before she died. And the Ansel Adams book was actually Christian's (see what great taste I have in husbands?).

We had a coffee table for years, but after bruising our shins one too many times, we got rid of it. I'll figure out how to display my beautiful books one of these years. In the meantime, I'm still searching for the coffee table book that turns into a coffee table that Kramer made.

As I read this, I'm waiting on the last few minutes of baking for a batch of Hazelnut French Macarons! Don't just look at the pretty pictures, try something. I still ruin macarons from time to time but even when they fail to get feet or have some other 'error' of technique, they still TASTE good.

I DARE you to try just one recipe from one of the books this week! Try a Chocolate Pots de Creme' or something that's not too hard and you'll feel more confident each time. So what if you ruin a batch or two first? It's fun to LEARN too!

Anne Geddes totally frightens me. So thanks.

I love that you have so many coffee table books and no table. We no longer have our coffee table, but even when we did, we never had books for it.

You need a pretty bookshelf, and you could display your books across the top (rotating them from time to time), like the library does, in the kid section.

Now that we don't actually USE our living room, we can have a coffee table. Before we banged our knees, the babies fell down, or everything on it got destroyed.

I love having mine now (in the room reserved for Home teachers and visiting teachers)

I had a Scanlan calendar a few years ago and I've kept it for the beautiful pictures. As if my cravings for Europe could get any worse...
