Spelling Bee

Ethan participated in a class spelling bee on Friday, and was one of the top two in the class. That means he gets to be in the school spelling bee this Thursday. We have been going over the list of words they gave us, and only a few of them trip him up. It has been fun figuring out little tricks to help him remember difficult words: you do "business" on a bus (b-u-s are the first 3 letters) (he was spelling it buisness); he was spelling odor o-d-e-r until Christian raised both arms above his head and drew giant o's in each armpit.

I was in my school's spelling bees in fourth and fifth grade. In fourth grade, I came in sixth place, and in fifth grade, I came in third place. I can still remember which words I got out on (rest assured, I will never forget how to spell them). In fourth grade, the word was "parfait." (A bit ironic, considering I then went on to get my degree in French.) And in fifth grade, the word was "auspicious."

Yes, I am a spelling nerd. And proud of it. And, I am raising a spelling nerd. Good luck to Ethan on Thursday!

Good luck to Ethan! Love the armpits way to remember!

I love the arm pit example - I hope it does well. You're teaching him really good skills for memory, too!

I came in second place in my 6th grade spelling bee. I was foiled by a kid named George. I have the worst long term memory, but I still remember his name.

I got out on the word squalid. I spelled it "squallid". Dang it.

Good luck, kiddo!

In sixth grade, I was foiled by "dulcet."

I hate that word now. I use it only ironically.

I will never be able to think of the word odor without picture armpits again. Thanks for that... :)

Good luck Ethan!

I'm a spelling nerd too, but ever since I learned Hebrew I find I check myself on spelling more often. Something about another alphabet and using vowel differently has forever messed me up. I hate it, because I also hate bad spelling! Especially the word DEFINITELY. It's an I, people.

Yeah, that's vowelS.

Yay for Ethan!! I was in a spelling bee once too but I can't remember anything other than that. I think I did well but I will have to ask my mom.

Good luck to Ethan!

I am totally laughing about the "O" in the pits but it is a perfect way to remember - lol

Pack your tissues for the spelling bee. My son was in the 2nd grade bee last year and every kid (boys and girls) CRIED when they got out. It was heart-wrenching! My son ended up winning, but it was hard to feel like we could celebrate much because we were surrounded by kids still sniffling over the word they spelled wrong.

Good luck to Ethan!

"Auspicious"?! Holy cow! I have always had a knack for spelling--at least when writing down the words. If you tell me to spell them out loud, I can't do it. It's weird.

Congrats to your little guy, sounds like hard work and fun for the entire family. I spell so poorly that sometimes the computer spell check doesn't even recognize it. I'm nerdy in many aspects but like to think of myself as quirky. Spell On!!!

I love how you help him remember the spelling! And how cute that you remember what words you spelled wrong so long ago. The only spelling bee and misspelled word that I can remember took place in Anne of Green Gables. :)

Good Luck to him! Lael just participated in her school Bee a few weeks ago. She did well but is excited to do better next year.

Aw, good luck to Ethan tomorrow! All I remember about spelling bees was panicing because I was standing up in front of too many people...
But I am a fellow spelling nerd. :)
