Impress Young People! (And Maybe Some Old People Too)

 My eight year old got this at school a couple of weeks ago, and I thought it was so clever I wanted to pass it on to you.

A - 1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15,17,19,21,23,25,27,29,31
B - 2,3,6,7,10,11,14,15,18,19,22,23,26,27,30,31
C - 4,5,6,7,12,13,14,15,20,21,22,23,28,29,30,31
D - 8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,24,25,26,27,28,29,30,31
E - 16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27,28,29,30,31

Now, you have someone either pick a number between and including 1 and 31 (if it is someone you know), or, if it is someone you don't know, have them choose the day they were born.  Then have them tell you all of the letter(s) their number occur(s) in.  For example, since my birthday is on the 13th (of November - mark your calendars), I would say that my number is in letters A, C, and D.  Then, you can magically tell them what their number is, just like that!  Amaze and astound everyone.

The trick is that no matter what number they choose, the very first number in each of those letters added up equals their number.  So, A's line begins with 1, C's begins with 4, and D's begins with 8.  1+4+8=13.

Cool, huh?  Try it.  It works every time.  And be prepared to impress your kids when they get home from school.  Or your colleagues at work.  Or the maître d' at the restaurant you frequent.  It's like magic.

(After reading my instructions, they kind of didn't make sense to me.  I hope it makes sense to you.  If you get it, but my instructions are garbled, help me rewrite them and I will edit them.)

I actually do this in one of the substance abuse groups I teach. I make it centered around drugs and sex and how they will all die, but I think it works out well.

HAHAHA!!! Sorry, Kristina's comment had me rolling. I understood your instructions perfectly. How clever is that? So going to impress the maitre d' the next time I go to a restaurant. :)
