I Was 10 Feet Away From Oprah This Afternoon!

So, I'm going to admit it, but I'm embarrassed to: I don't have a political bone in my body. I know that there are Republicans and there are Democrats, and I have vaguely heard something about caucuses here in Iowa sometime soon, and I know there is an election coming up, but that is (ignorantly) the extent of my knowledge. But I had a friend who had an extra ticket invite me to a support rally for Barack Obama this afternoon, and Oprah Winfrey was going to be there endorsing him, and did I want to go? Well, Christian was happy to watch the kids, and happy to give me a break. So I spent this afternoon in Des Moines at a Barack Obama rally. According to one site, there were 18,500 people in the room, which I believe. It was like a giant gymnasium, and they didn't have chairs. It was standing room only and you didn't have room to move around. Visit here and here if you want to see "professional" pictures of things I saw today. But if my fuzzy pictures suffice, then that's cool too (I don't have a very good camera, and the only pictures that worked were ones without flash). So now I can say I'm slightly less ignorant about a couple of the issues, and it actually did interest me enough to do some research on some of the candidates and see what I think about what they are running for. And I could attend the caucuses on January 3 at 6:30 (they said this at least 20 times during the rally) and make a difference in this election! It's kind of cool! I've never lived in a state where my vote really does matter! And, to top it all off, I've seen Oprah in person, so now I can die happy. Okay, I promise I'm totally kidding, but it was kind of exciting to have this experience this afternoon. Oh, by the way, I was 50 feet away from the stage during the rally, but then Oprah and Barack came down and shook hands with the people at the front, and I was only 10 feet away from the front. So that was kind of fun.
Slightly fuzzy shot of Oprah during her speech.

Oprah up close, shaking hands with people.

What an interesting experience! I would love to see what Oprah is like in person. And a political rally--how exciting. Glad you had a bit of an adventure, hopefully it draws you into the political world of issues a little further.

That is so cool. I am totally like you, the only reason I know anything about politics is because of Dillon:).

That is cool - there are only a few issues that interest me. I should be more into it all, but I am with you. There are far more important things to deal with in life. I am glad you got to go and enjoy a unique day!

That is really cool Erin. Are you supporting Obama now? Maybe this will start your political bone growing.

I liked what he had to say, but of course he said all of the "good" things. I am going to have to research all of the candidates to see which one has the most "good" things in my mind! We'll see what happens!

I'm not poking fun or anything, but it is kinda funny that the whole post was about Oprah and not about the man that has a good chance of being the next ruler of the free world. :-)

I am so jealous. I was at one point in time (pre marriage) majoring in international politics at BYU. Being there for me would almost be as cool as attending a Ohio St vs Michigan football game (I will do that before I die)

Obama's cool - that would have been so fun! Louie is so majorly bummed that we leave Iowa just before the Caucuses. I also have enjoyed living in a state where your vote actually counts. Pretty fun! Living here has made me more politically minded than I ever cared to be before. Maybe it will suck you in (insert evil laugh).
