Well, people are right...it does have the best prices in town and the people are really nice and friendly. It was, however, not what I expected. Here's a photo of the store:

The letters on top of the store remind me of a 1950's diner or something. Actually, when I see this store I think of riding on my Grandpa's motorcycle with him to the Safeway in Tacoma, Washington to get bubble gum flavored ice cream. That is one of my favorite memories, and the Safeway had those old letters hoisted up on the roof of the building like this Fareway does. Anyway, our bishop's wife told me that Fareway is the best place to shop, as long as you don't mind the fact that the Mexican food is located above the ice cream. And it's true. The store is only slightly bigger than the church cultural hall, and so they have to stack things on top of each other in order to fit everything in the store. But they have a full-service butcher shop in the store, so that is definitely where you go to purchase all of the fresh meat you want.
They are building a Super Wal-Mart in South Ames, and it will probably be opened in a couple of months. Now that I have grown accustomed to Fareway, I wonder which one I will prefer? I'm more of a bigger city type girl, and I like having options. But Christian prefers smaller towns, and really likes living here (I do too, but it's a little smaller than I prefer). I wonder where we will end up next August?
What kind of grocery stores do they have where you live, and what do you prefer?

LOL! What kind of grocery store will deliver to my house? If I can stay home and have anyone else go get stuff, that would be my preference. I LOVE super target when I have to go - it has all the fun stuff and all the food - though they are more pricey - it is a good trade off. The tradeway does look like it is out of the early 1900's how funny is that.
I love to go to a local grocery stsore, but sometimes they dont have all the things that walmart does. I hate going to Walmart and spending $$ tons of money
We have a little fresh food market called "Monettes" and I LOVE it.I try to go there for fruits and veggies because it's all local and very cheap. Although sad to admit it, I do my regular shopping at Walmart or Meijer. Both large chain stores. It isn't super supportive of the local economy and I am just feeding the superchain frenzy and aiding in the destruction of small local businesses. One day when I can afford to shop a little friendlier, I will. For now I have a tight budget.
I am with Leisy. It is just cheaper to shop at the big chain stores even though I do try to shop at Macey's and Alberston's when they have a good sell. I also shop a lot at Sam's because I get more bang for my buck. That is awesome that you found a little store that is good to shop at. Happy choosing when Walmart comes.
I also hate to admit that I do almost all my shopping at Walmart just because they have most of the stuff I need, clothes, diapers, everything for cheaper. I DO, however, like to shop at Macey's when I don't have my kids with me, rather than trying to do pricematch with the overly annoyed checkers at Walmart--seriously, they can get so ornery there! That's why I do love Macey's-they are super nice there.
I am a Walmart shopper 90% of the time, but sometimes I am just so sick of going there 3 or more times a week! The last few times I've grocery shopped, I've gone to Target because the grocery side is never busy. It's just a nicer atmosphere. I will also go to Macey's or Albertson's because sometimes Walmart doesn't have a specific kind of pasta sauce I like.
Fareway is owned by and LDS family. They are the best thing around for meat. It is all local and FRESH.
Yeah, the meat and produce are the best at Fareway. Sorry no one warned you about it's appearance! I've heard the Fareway in Nevada is way nicer and bigger. Anyway - while I miss Iowa very much, I am liking having one-stop-shopping back (though it hurts my conscience a little). I thought Ames was small, until I moved to Brigham. It's about half as big!
