Reasons Why to Start a Blog

Logan, Utah's newspaper, the Herald Journal, recently had an article explaining why blogging is so fun and addicting. Here's the link.

And here is a letter I wrote to my cousin, but this applies to anyone who doesn't currently have a blog...just print and give this to anyone you know who doesn't have a blog.

Dear Candace, or LaDonna, or (fill in the blank),

I'm writing to tell you why you have to start a blog. This is going to sound like a commercial! But I hate living so far away from everyone, and I want to be able to know what is going on in my family's/friends' lives!

So, here goes: a blog is free. All you have to do is get on http://www.blogger.com/, and follow the directions. If you don't have a gmail account, you will have to start one, but it's free too, and it only takes a minute to set up.
A blog is a good way to show off your family. We all know that you have the cutest kids in the world (well, besides ours, of course). Don't you want to show off pictures of them to everyone?
A blog gives you way more e-mail to look forward to. I don't know about you, but I love getting on my e-mail and seeing that I have new messages from people I like. When you set up your blog, you can have it e-mail you every time someone leaves you a message. I love reading my messages, and I love leaving messages for people too.
A blog can tell people what is going on in your life. My cousin is pregnant, and she has a cute widget on the side of her blog saying how far along she is and it changes every day. It's cute! (And don't worry if you don't know what a widget is. You'll figure it out as you play around with your blog more.)
You can write whatever you want on your blog. Mine may be boring to some people, but it must be amusing to others because people read it!
Anyone you want can read it to catch up on your lives. I have a friend who lives in Fiji who knows more about my life than my sister, because she doesn't have internet access and we don't talk on the phone every day. I also know that my dad, mom and brother check our blog every day. We don't talk on the phone very often, but they know what is going on in my life because I post on my blog almost daily!

It gives you a chance to be creative, and it could become a new hobby. There are all sorts of cool wallpaper/backgrounds you can put on your blog to jazz it up, and you can add video and pictures to make it fun. It's also fun to steal ideas from other people's blogs and use them yourself...although it would probably be a nice idea to publicly thank them on your blog for plagiarizing them. People like seeing their names on other people's blogs. (At least I do.)

So this is my plea for you to start a blog. They are so fun, and addicting when you start! If you have questions, or don't really know how to start one but want to, e-mail me.

Here's my blog website: http://www.thewimmerfamily.blogspot.com/

Take care. I hope to hear from you soon on a blog!
Love,
Erin

Does anyone else have any other important reasons on why to start a blog that I am forgetting? Okay, now e-mail this to people who don't have blogs and tell them I told you to!

that is great, another reason why you start a blog is for a journal. I heard that sunday! If you are not great at journal keeping then this is it!
SO you are not a rambler you are journaling!
Thanks for blogging Erin!

Pretty compelling stuff. The only thing that I would add, is that if people don't really like the idea of ANYONE reading about their personal life (hello stalkers), then you can make your blog private and only invite those who you want to see it.
Also, I'd say it is a time saver. Even if you spend an entire hour posting, commenting, decorating, etc., that is one hour that counts towards everyone you want to keep in touch with. I remember when James and I got engaged and we spent HOURS calling people and telling them. We probably didn't seem too excited about the whole thing after telling everyone the same story OVER and OVER. The same when I was pregnant with Zoe. On a blog you can make an announcement or a request and everyone who wants to see it can do so.
Above all, there really isn't anything negative about at least attempting one!

That is great! I will share with my friends and family. And I agree with you and Desta...LaDonna needs to start a blog! I haven't the slightest idea what's going on with them and I want to know how they're doing!

Here's a quote from the LDS.org homepage:
At a commencement address on December 15, 2007, Elder M. Russell Ballard urged graduating students at Brigham Young University-Hawaii to use blogs and other forms of “new media” to contribute to a national conversation about the Church.

I haven't actually read the address, but that is another reason to use blogs for good. In that same vein, but not necessarily religious, I have seen some blogs win "awards" for improving the blogging community. You know just filling up the internet with things that are virtuous, lovely, and of good report. We can all help contribute to goodness in the world by blogging about righteous things (like strengthening our FAMILIES!!!).

And of course I totally support all the ideas you gave as well. Go blog and be happy people!

Erin~ way to go!! Your reasons are all fabulous and I have to say that it is easy thing to start and keep up with even if you don't change the background or anything like me. Mine is plain and simple and I love to read and keep up on everyones lives.
