Days One and Two

Okay, so we made it to Castle Valley, UT. After a long 16 hour drive with very well-behaved children, we're here and alive and very tired. Tonight we're staying at the Red Cliffs Lodge, a fantastic place with high-speed internet. Yes, I can hardly keep my eyes open and I'm still blogging. That's what you call a die-hard (or pure stupidity). I have two things I noticed while driving, and one cute story.

The first is construction. There is always construction somewhere along the interstate. Any interstate. Just pick one, and traffic is backed up. Yuck. But we still made good time and I'm not complaining.

The second thing I noticed while we were driving is a funny sign as we were driving somewhere in eastern Colorado. The sign said, "WARNING: Correction facility. Do not pick up hitchhikers." Wow, that's a funny thought. Not funny hah hah, but "what's going on" funny (name that movie.)

And the cute story: I didn't bring swimming suits for any of us. Well, the place we are staying has a pool and the boys and I had a couple of hours to kill since Christian and Al went fishing (we're in Castle Valley visiting his mom and stepdad). I found out that the gift shop sells Huggies Little Swimmers, so I bought one for each boy. Then I said to Ethan, "Let's put on your swim diaper!" And he said, "No, I don't wear diapers." I tried to persuade him to put it on, and finally he said, "I'm scared. I don't want people to make fun of me because I don't wear diapers. " And I had a moment of pure genius. I said, "Actually, these aren't swim diapers. They are disposable swimming suits!" And he got really excited and put it on, and both boys had tons of fun in the pool!

So tomorrow afternoon we leave for Cedar. We're driving around town all evening getting used to the town and scoping out possible homes so that we will be prepared for our Monday morning meeting with the real estate agent. I'm excited!

Oh, and I found out more about the river flooding back home in Ames. Flood level is 20 feet high - when we left town the river was at 25 feet, the second highest it has ever been. The missionaries from both wards and other ward members were sand bagging. No one in our ward was affected by it; I'm not sure about the other ward, but I know lots of people in general live somewhat close to the river and it was supposed to rain tonight too. So I'm praying for the people of my town. It's scary!

Okay, now it's really time for bed. It's 10:52 Utah time, meaning it's 11:52 Iowa time. I'm about to pass out. But first, I'll check the MLS just one more time...

Just went through Cedar today and was thinking of you. OK, actually I was sleeping, but on our way TO Vegas on Thursday I was awake and thinking of you. Can't wait to see you in Payson. Have you read The Host yet? If yes, we must discuss as I just finished it.... Good luck with houses.

Call me when you get service. Sounds like a fun hotel, just by the name! Glad you got there safely, and that the kids were good. Yea for Cedar City! Pure genius with the disposable swimming suit idea!

What a trip! It sounds exciting, though. Utahrealestate.com is my favorite site for house hunting. I'm relieved not to be checking it all the time anymore, but it gave the most complete information of all the real estate sites. I don't know how it is for Southern Utah, but it's great for Northern. Good luck. I'll be anxiously awaiting the house news. Just remember, you can qualify for a LOT more house than is affordable. We were shocked by how much we could get a loan for. I was like: We could never, ever afford that - why would they ask for our life story, making sure we pay our bills, and then give us a loan for tons more than we can afford? It's a crazy world. But I'm sure you guys know all that stuff. I'm excited for you!

Did you wear a "disposable swimming suit" too? JK!

Have fun looking at homes. Warning: If you go into any model homes, don't get stuped by all of the beautiful decorations and furniture. That's how they trick you into buying their houses.

It sounds like you are surviving the move. It also sound like you got out of Iowa at just the right time. How exciting to get to look for a house to buy and to finally be settling somewhere for a little while and to be done with school!! Yippee!!
