"Up North"

For most of my life, I lived in northern Utah, about 30 minutes from the Idaho border. Then for four years I lived in Orem (kind of in the middle of the state). Now, I live in southern Utah, about 50 minutes from the Arizona border. I only remember driving to St. George once in my young life; it seemed so far away. Now, that's exactly where I go when I want to go shopping "in the city."

In church yesterday, three different people mentioned "up north." Everyone seemed to know exactly where they were talking about. But I was pretty clueless. I'm from "up north," but I'm pretty sure they weren't talking about that far north.

It's going to take a little getting used to living "down south" (???). But I'm excited for the new experiences we will have living here.

I know what you mean. I have been living in Pierce County, WA my whole life and now I live down south in Thurston county. I am getting used to it but I still feel very clueless when people are talking about neighborhoods or local shops that I have never heard of.

I love it! We used to call shopping up north for a long time, and we meant UT county. Down south ment St george Area!

That's funny. My grandma is from old school Cedar City, and she says all kinds of weird phrases. Maybe you'll end up saying them too.
In Iowa, the word "pass-through" weirded me out. Maybe they say it other places, but I hadn't heard it before then. I would have said: "The sign up sheets are in the hall". I suppose that kitchen window thing in the church is convenient for passing things through, but "pass-through" is a lot of word when making announcements. OK, I'm done now.

Also, I do feel very much "up north" here in The Brig.
