Will You Please Help Me People?
Okay, here's the situation: even though I absolutely adore our house, there is one thing I don't like very much. And it's a very big problem because people's first impressions are created by it: the front door.
What a bizarre thing! It's like this huge plot of cement and a dark hallway-ish type patio leading up to the front door. I don't know what to do with it! I can see that at some point the previous owners had plants on either side of the door because of water stains. Since interior (and exterior) design is SO not my forte, I really need some thoughts and advice. How can I make this weird space look nice?

Yay Christian! Congrats! Ok, so I'm thinking you need to get some plants too, for either side of the door. Then you need to get a wreath hanger, and a pretty wreath. Have you seen mine? I can't believe how much it brings to my front door. Or even get some fake plants so they will last all winter. Maybe a ficus tree? I don't know. I'm not the best a design either. What is outside of the walkway? Maybe put some plants on either side out there too. Good luck! We can talk later!
I can't tell how wide it is, but maybe some little stone benches against one long side, and make it into a mini arboretum or something. My friend's mom had a similar porch, and finally just redid the whole thing to have wooden beams over head and a sitting area and plants and such...a few ideas.
You could start by painting your door a warm inviting color. Maybe a burnt orange, or a fall looking orange. Then Steve suggests using some hanging plants, as well as some on the ground.
I think that it would be so cute if you bought some planters with some colorful flowers and put them on both sides. I am not sure if you can, but on the side walls I would maybe try to hang some planters with some flowers that grow out and down. I think the little benches are a cute idea as well. But first things first....get a new....BIG welcome mat. Target had a lot of really cute ones.
I agree with the new big welcome mat, and a brighter door. Also, a wreath, it doesn't have to be very larger. Mine doesn't even have flowers on the weath just simple, but inviting. I think it would be nice with both some hanging plants and some potted plants. Get some good hardy greens that are shade plants, and they should do well. You can ask the people at the garden center if you aren't sure what to get. I will take a picture of mine. I just added the hanging plant and big planter, and I love it, it just seems more inviting! Also, I didn't see a porch light? If you don't have one, and you have dirt at the front part of the patio on the sides, you can get some solar lights or solar spotlights that reflect onto the porch, but even just the little solar lights adds a nice touch. Again, I can take a picture if mine I just added in the front of my house. Most places have them clearanced because it is the end of the season. I just bought a pack of 8 for 14.99 at sears, and they are great, because they use no electricity! Anyways. you can check my blog for the day picture, and I will have to wait until this evening to take the picture of the lights because it has to be dark. Good Luck! And congrats Christian. That is such a great accomplishment!
Congrats Christian. I think we've all got the same idea here... plants. Also, a neighbor of mine has this little round iron breakfast-table with matching chairs. That would be really cute too. Or, you could get (or have Christian build) some long planters that you could place on either side of the walkway. A store here in Logan (On the Avenue) sells these really cute wooden ladders. There are cute decorations that you hang on them for each season and holiday.
You've gotten some good ideas, so I fear I have nothing new to add. If you are up in Salt Lake any time soon, I would stop in at Tai Pan (on 9000 south) and look at some stuff there. Have you been to it? It's amazing! They have planters, fake flowers, wreaths, all kinds of stuff.
Ohh, I like the ladder idea. Have you ever been on lakeside. com? They have some cute (inexpensive) ladders, I just bought one.
I don't know what you can do the rest of the year, but at Halloween time, you sure can make it look really spooky if you want!!!!! That would be awsome!
I agree with painting the door a warm inviting color, hanging a wreath on the door, and I say a big long planter box on one side and a cute bench on the other. Good luck and Congratulations Christian!!!!
Wow...what great ideas. I have nothing new to add except congrats to Christian!
Hey, Erin! I don't know what to do with your door, but I just wanted to say "hi"! I'm so glad I found you . . . it's always fun to find my long-lost friends!! Tell Christian hi and congrats!
Congrats to Christian! I am glad you pulled off that surprise party.
As for decorating. I am not to great at it, but how about some vinyl lettering that says welcome on the outside of the door?
Liz
I say build a wooden pergola connecting it to the two sides of the house and hang plants on the sides and maybe even a cute wooden gate in the front. some planters on both sides of the door (long rectangular ones) and maybe even stain the cement. Good luck! looks like a great house!
