BIG Mistake

I got a Wal-Mart flyer/magazine in the mail, filled with toy options for the holidays. I thought, "Hmmm, it would be fun to have the kids circle things they would like so we can have a better idea of what they would like, or to let grandparents know."

Yeah, BIG mistake.

I also told them to dog-ear each page that they chose a toy from. Yep, you've got it, every page was dog eared and every page had at least 3-4 toys circled on it. Sometimes, it would have been easier for them to just circle the entire page in one giant swoop.

When did I forget what it was like to be a kid and see a catalog full of toys???

I am laughing Erin. That is so typical. I loved how quickly the last page was forgotten. Every page was OHH... So cute. Good luck with getting that second loan for Christmas. It is looking like a pretty hefty bill. :)

It sounds like what I still do!

Our girls did the same thing! Except I did not hand them a marker only because the 2ish year old would not have used the marker on the designated magazine. But the 2 older ones for a good hour "OOOHHH I want this one" Until baby got a hold of the magazine and tore it to shreds. I guess she wanted us to remember the true meaning of Christmas. hehehehehe.

well, I'm the evil mom who throws those away before the kids see them. However, I get busted everytime and they have been known to pull them out of the trash.
What you do next is tell them to pick their top 3 cannot live without items and then x your fingers you can find them!

So funny, I remember looking thru catalogs when I was younger. I love thier excitement with each new page. Just priceless

We got the same catalog and when my oldest saw it, he immediately spirited it away. He spent a good long while looking through it and deciding. (Little does he know, I already have what he's getting.) He just pulled the pages out that had things on them he wanted. No circling for him. I'm supposed to save them, study them, memorize them and pass the info on to Santa.

We got the same catalog and my kids have perused but I didn't tell them to circle or dog ear. I just listen discreetly as they go on and on about what they like.

It looks like the older kids have finally hit the mp3 player stage.

At least it looks like you have lots of choices, and can get them anything and they'll be thrilled, right?

This has nothing to do with your post but where did you live where you had mice and occasionally *gulp* snakes coming out of your vents? (saw it in Jillen's comments) I would have freaked, we had flying ants in our first apartment. It sucked!

Yes, we got the same add. I actually liked it because it was one of the few times Nate sat down and was quiet. He looked at it over and over again. Now it is ripped up and in the recycle.

i loved it when my mom let us do this!!

So funny! I totally gave my kids the Target magazine full of toys, BUT with the strict warning that they better not ask for ANYTHING in it unless it was just one thing. Carson just watched this and said, "But they can't have them all huh." Ha ha!

I let me kids do that yesterday as well. I had NO idea what they even wanted so this gives me somewhere to start. Not that I will be getting all of the toys. I at least know what they kind of want this year.

That's hilarious. I also would have dog-eared every page, duh! I'd never dare to hand my kids a toy catalog. The extent of our toys fills up the corner of one small room. Sad, but true. They're still tiny and haven't gotten sick of them yet. I'm thinking of a tool bench type thing for Christmas, though. That ought to take up some more space!

I am hoping that when they are old enough to "cash in" their saving bonds they will react the same way with whatever they decide to do with them! heehee.

That is EXACTLY what my kids did!! And not only the Walmart one but the Target one and the Toys R Us one!!

I still get that way. It's kind of sad, being as I'm 30 now.

I did that too, only the sounds from my boys were not so pleasant!
One was taking too long on a page or one circled what the other wanted!! Good times, Good times!!!

We did this with Sage. She only chose one thing from the entire ad. I couldn't believe it.

Sometimes I let my kids look at the grocery store ads we get in the mail; they freak out over the boxes of mac and cheese on sale.

LOL. That is hilarious.

"Ooooohh!! I want THIS! I want THIS!! OHHH, LOOK AT THIS!!" hahahaha

We used to do this, too. But with the J.C. Penny catalog. Whatever happened to those? Ya can't circle the stuff on the computer!

So cute! I love their enthusiasm.

I'm impressed by how well they're working together. I'm not sure that activity would have gone as smoothly at our place.

We did this same thing for our boys, and they even thought of Anabelle and circles all kinds of girl gear! Isn't it cute though?

love it. Ha ha! "OOOH! LOOK AT THIS!" So, Santa has a pretty big list now...

awesome! I just got mine in the mail today. maybe I should wrap it first since it seems like a really cool thing to enjoy.

I did the exact same thing! And Ella went from wanting a sleeping bag and a hula hoop to wanting 8 million toys, including a High School Musical doll with attached rock star microphone.

Dumb, dumb mom moment.

That was just like my kids. We got that catalog the other day and Alyssa and Owen wanted everything. Now I am confused as what to get them for x-mas. Good luck with your shopping!!

Cute boys! That is really truly classic. I've done that before. Only once. I was hoping they'd choose maybe three or four things so I could pick the cheapest ones to buy for them (I'm totally that kind of mother), but they just wanted everything. I don't seem to remember my kid's greed being as cute as your kid's, though.

Maybe next time each give them a certain amount of stickers that they can use to put next to their favorites. And I totally remember going crazy and drooling over all the toys in the Sears catalog.

Brooke said...

I don't dare do this. I don't even dare ask them what they want because I know I will never hear the end of it, and every commercial that comes on for something remotely cool or even stupid, I will be hearing about how they want it. You really must be crazy.

We had the exact same scene play out at our house! It must be a kid thing :)

I had to hide the JC Penney toy catalogue because Aida was always saying that she wanted everything in there!

Oh this made me chuckle. We stopped asking years ago in order to avoid that same scenario that we kept repeating. Year after year...oh the frustration.

Luckily we get two Sunday papers (for the coupons) and so Ryan and Tay each got their own big Target toy book. It kept them busy all morning.

My girls 5 and 3 were pouring over the same catalog yesterday.

Lara Neves said...

Just had to come back and tell you that the Target catalog came and I had my girls do the same thing.

I was pretty impressed with Bria, she only circled three things. Now I feel fairly compelled to get them for her (actually already got her one...I knew she wanted it pretty bad).

Chloe, on the other hand, circled 100+ items it seems like. And when I asked her if she could only have ONE, what would she pick? She still rattled off about 5. At least it gives me an idea. :)
