Fanks

Aidan, my three year old, is speaking very well, except for one problem: he has a problem with the letters "th". He can't pronounce the "th" sound; it comes out as "f". His brother Ethan is "Efan." He is "fwee" years old, and the next holiday coming up is "fanksgiving."

I have decided to start a few new traditions this year for Thanksgiving. We just purchased our first house. This will be the first time we will host Thanksgiving at our home. I am going to have the kids help me make favors for the place settings. We are forgoing the candied yams (sorry Ruth!) and we will be making creamed cauliflower and peas instead. We will also go around the table, one by one, and discuss the things we are "fankful" for. I am thinking maybe "fwee fings" each will be a good number.

I am sure the "th"/"f" problem will eventually resolve. But for now, I want to remember and savor these moments. Every child is precious, and I give "fanks" for both of my children every day.

(Written for two reasons: Scribbit's Write Away Contest, and to keep the memories fresh in my mind.)

Owen is four, and he still says the "w" sound for r's...and he still has many words that he totally mispronounces. He insists that pajamas are actually majamas...so he begs every night to wear his "wocket majamas". Cracks me up every time. :o)

How fun. Thanksgiving in your new home!

Land has some speech things too. I think I would've been more freaked out with SIerra, but with him, I just think, oh well. They will eventually resolve. And if he has to have speech class, oh, well. Cute. Have a fun fanksgiving.

I love hearing little kids talk! It's actually a little when they start getting it right.

I you'd like a healthier (and I think yummier) yam option, try peeling and cubing fresh yams, putting them in a roasting pan (I use a jelly roll pan instead), sprinkling with a LITTLE olive oil and then cinnamon and allspice, and fresh pepper if you'd like. Roast them at 375-400 for maybe 35-45 minutes--it will depend on the size of your chuncks--stirring a couple of times. We love these and do mot miss lots of butter and sugar.

My 4 year old has a problem with the letter "v". They always come out sounding like a "b". Her name is Avery and she says it Abery. She calls DVD's DBD's and so forth. She also can't say the word "use" for some weird reason. She says "muse". It so funny. I work and work with her on it, but I know it's not going to stop until she's ready.

That is so clever and cute! Perfect! And the "I think I'm going to blow up because there is so much love in this pizza."? That's a boy who loves his pizza :)

So cute! At our house, we hear lots of "wank you." We keep trying to convince Holden that it's not as cute when he does it.

I hope you enjoy your first Thanksgiving at home!

My Olivia has the same problem. She is "free" instead of three. I think it is cute and I am glad that you posted about it to remember!!

Congrats on the new house!

And I love with little people pronounce the "th" like an "f."

Chloe used to say her th's like f's, too. I loved it. Then one day she said "I'm thirsty" and I was sad.

Thanks for the reminder to enter the write away contest. I always mean to do it, and have only actually gotten around to it once. :) We'll see what I can come up with.

fanks for this great fanksgiving post. It sounds like a cutie you have. What a great idea though. I saw that this lady had a runner that they put in the middle of their table every year for Thanksgiving. Then they write what they are thankful for on it. It has gone on 9 years now. I love that idea. Take care Erin.

I think the way kids talk is so cute. My little cousin Karlee couldn't say her k's they came out s and she couldn't say her f's or p's correctly. So her name was sarlee, I was sayla, etc. etc. And one time they went to the beach and she went to the bathroom. She got fee fee on her slip slops. (pee pee on her flip flops). It cracks me up!

Cute post--but don't get rid of the yams!!! I have a great recipe for yams, although they are more like a dessert:).

I love Thanksgiving... You would think that with a holiday that worships Football, Food and the 'Thanks & Giving to others', we would be praising it to the sky but alas.

PS. Sorry I have been a little MIA

That's really precious. We have the tradition of going around the table, too, and stating what we're truly thankful for.

He probably will grow out of it. I hope you get it recorded so he can hear it too when he's older :) It's sweet.

When Zoe says something in "Toddlerese" and we repeat it back to her the way she says it, she thinks it is hilarious and will correct us.

Brooklynn speaks so clearly and perfectly (she's a little obsessed about it) but Anniston is a little different. She has trouble with her l's. So when she is yelling for her sister, it sounds like Brookwynn. I think that it is adorable! I also think Aiden is adorable!

My son gets his K's and Ch's mixed up. And can I come to your house for Fanksgiving, my family doesn't have any plans, we might just go to Wendy's.

TH is one of the hardest sounds to make and you should not worry until he is about 5 or 6. I live and breathe speech. Plus it is really cute and Fanksgiving sounds more fun anyway

so cute. good mom for recording this for posterity!

and YAY!! for thanksgiving at your pad this year!

I never want to correct their cute little speech impediments! They go away all too soon. Melissa is annoyed because she her "thr" sound comes out "fl". So through is flew. It's too cute to bear.

I'm hosting thanksgiving at my house for the first time this year too! I'm so excited to make lots of pies and my grandma's favorite rolls.

Gabe finally started to say "L" this past week. He is 5 and a half. I love the way little kids talk, it goes away WAY too fast!

Kathy P said...

I wish they would talk that way forever. I have one that said "stampler" for "stapler" until 3rd grade, when other kids made fun of him... rats. I love the language of a child.

I love the way they mispronounce things!

Your little Aidan would fit right in over here in Poland. They all Polish kids have two English lessons each week. They are TAUGHT to pronounce the "th" sound like an F.

Oh I love these moments when words are so cute and sweet and unique! My baby is 19 months and has all kinds of cute pronunciations. And I am indeed fankful...

So sweet! And little kiddos hear themselves as being correct, so if you echoed his "fanks" he'd probably answer with, "No, I said fanks!" :)
