What do you keep your thermostat set to at night? (We set ours on 64; our bedroom stays around four degrees cooler)
AND
If you have children, do you get up to check on them at night to make sure they aren't too hot/too cold/blankets flung everywhere? (My husband does; I'm not that nice)
AND most importantly
If you have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, how do you make the blasted toilet seat be a little warmer?! (My personal preference is to squeal when I sit down. It seems to make it a tiny bit better.)
P.S. the title of this post was going to be the name of a Nelly song. If you don't know it, keep it that way. If you do know it, sorry if you are singing it in your head right now.

Hmmm. I don't know the song. But now, I'm curious. Email me. I do not get up to check on the kids, unless they're sick. I do check on them before I go to bed. I just muddle through the freezing toilet seat, and we set our thermostat to about 65.
64?!?!?!? I would be frozen to death in the morning. When Adam's not hear, I jack up the heat to like 76. I like to be warm, warm, warm.
I try to keep our thermostat at 68, but Paulo always turns it up when I'm not looking. We've compromised at 70. I check on Emma before I go to bed. She never sleeps with the covers on, so she wears extra warm jammies with layers underneath. Before we got a video monitor, Paulo checked on Emma every time he woke up at night. And as for the toilet seat, it's really not cold when the thermostat is set at 70. I guess that's one bonus of having it that high. Doesn't QUITE cancel out the high electric bill though.
To answer all of your questions we set it at 50 in the main part of the house, 60 in the baby's room and no heat in Keira or Rick and my room.I hate paying for heat in the day and if you want to be warm at night put on another layer or blanket. lol. No, I don't check on my children in the middle of the night. Keira can take care of herself and the baby's room is warm. As for the toilet seat I just suck it up I guess. :)
P.S. After I read your post, there were no comments yet (you had only posted 2 minutes before!). I totally thought I was going to leave the FIRST comment today. :)
Oh for the love. My P.S. isn't even attached to my comment. You're too popular Erin! ;)
When I am not home my heat is at 55 degrees. When I am at home it's 65 degrees, when I am sleeping it is 59 degrees.
Even people here in MN think Im crazy!
When we lived in an apartment it was always in the seventies. Now it's about 64 during the day and a little colder at night. I don't really love it.
And I just make sure the littlest one is very warmly dressed and then don't worry about the blanket being on or off, I just check before I go to bed, of course.
We keep the thermostat at an even 66 all winter long. And we just dress warm, stay active and keep lots of blankets around. The boys sleep with their doors closed, so their rooms are a little warmer during the night. I can't remember the last time I got up in the middle of the night to check on the kids or pee! Got no answers for you there!
I keep it at 69 during the day and 65 usually at night. I fight to deep it lower, but this is the compromise I have made with my husband who is apparently just like Kristina.
I never check on my kids unless they're sick or a babysitter put them to bed.
WE DO 62, I LOVE TO SLEEP ALL BUNDLED WHEN IT IS COLD. I LOVE THAT YOU ARE TACKELING THE TOUGH TOPICS THAT WE ALL WONDER ABOUT AND WANT ADVICE. THE COLD TOILET SEAT.. HEHE.. GREAT POST
I am very impressed Erin. Seriously impressed with a lot of you in here. I would grow icicles on my nose at 64. We are closer to 69 or 70. Wimps around here. Good for you.
We keep the thremostat at 72 at all times in the winter. I know the Nelly song and you TOTALLY should have made it your title!! I have a racy little video on my blog today but it is FREAKING HILARIOUS!!
Haha - you're funny. Every once in awhile I think about what I'm posting because I know my very proper and lady-like grandma reads my blog occasionally. I wonder if this will be the post she reads when I say "hell' or something silly like that.
I once went to a resturant with heated toilet seats it was so lovely I didnt want to leave EVER
I can sell you a heated toilet seat that even "cleans" you with nice warm water and then dries you with nice warm air! all with the press of a button. ( you can even get one that has a carbon cartridge in it for air freshening!) Its only about $1300.00 But I've heard its worth EVERY penny! (oh, and I'm offended that you think I'd be offended...but probably that wasn't aimed at me, since you've seen the kinds of things JP puts up on our blog lol)
I'm just like you. About 64 at night. (58 during the day since no one is home) I do not check on my kid - should I? I refuse to pee in the cold of the night, I will hold it until morning when the heat kicks back on.
Meeh, kids can put their blankets on or take them off as needed. But I don't have them yet.... oh well
Ha ha! You are funny Erin. You know how you said you aren't that funny in real life? Well, I think that blogging with all the discovering your real self stuff and everything, maybe that's what has happened. :). We are 71 here. I'd love 75. We used to keep it at 69, but I really really REALLY hate being cold, and with a new baby, it's a good excuse ;).
PS I don't mind paying the extra $30.00 a month to be warm in the winter, it's totally worth it to me. At least, that's been the difference since we turned it up from 69.
I turn mine down to 60 at night and my bedroom is also a few degrees cooler. I like it to be cold when I'm sleeping. During the day, I rarely set it above 64. Our furnace is a monster and our house would be a sauna, especially in the basement where the furnace is and the kids bedrooms, if I set it any higher than that. They get up and complain that they're too hot if we turn it up any higher. Oh, I'm not very nice either. I never get up to check on the kids. I just let them tough it out on their own and figure they'll come find me if they need something.
I turn it down to 65 or 66 at night. Before I go to bed I sneak into the kids' room and turn a space heater on for them and make sure covers are on. But that's only because I don't want Zoe to wake up because she's cold.
I am so darn stinkin' relieved to know we aren't the only ones who set the thermostat that high at night (our room is probably more like 7 degrees colder, but that's okay). My boys' room is quite a bit warmer and the Little Guy sleeps on a loft bed way at the top--so he pretty much just need a blanket or two. I never check on my kids at night unless the spirit tells me to. So far, I haven't figured out why I have needed to do it the times that I have. That's the way I like it. I have no answers for you on the toilet seat thing. I will do almost anything to avoid getting out of bed once I've gotten in so I don't have that problem much. I don't get out of bed in the morning until the spouse has taken a shower and warmed things up (and when Jeeves tells me to).
We keep ours at 65, but our room is way colder and the girls room stays toasty...they always have on feet pj's when its winter time because neither one keeps blankets on all night. i keep the monitor on to hear for them and the door stays open since their room gets pretty warm when the heater kicks on...And in the bathroom we put a small floor heater on the counter and it clicks on and off so its not so stinkin cold when its time to use the bathroom.
I don't know that Nelly song but I think I could hazard a wild guess what it might be.
We actually turn our heater off at night. We like to sleep cold around here. But it rarely goes below 61. If the forecast is for exceptional lows at night then I think we turn it down to 60.
Throughout the day though. Our thermostat is set at 69 baby. 69.
I set my temp to go down to 65 so I'm in your ballpark but I very rarely get up in the night for anything or anyone. :)
And it's a good thing I'm terrible with song names and lyrics cuz I have no idea what you're talking about. I'll let it rest.
I need it much warmer than that or I'll be an icicle come morning.
Cold toilet seats are one thing, but my in my MIL's guest bath, there's a soft, poofy toilet seat cover. Sitting on that thing is a shock to the system every time.
We have a programmable thermostat (which I highly recommend by the way) at it's set to 66 in the day, 64 at night. But from 6 to 7 am it goes up to 70, so the house is nice and cozy for getting little ones out of bed and off to school.
I do stress about tiny kids kicking off blankets, but by the time they're about 2, they're big enough to realize they're cold and cover themselves up. When they're under 2 I just make sure I dress them in really warm jammies.
I have a padded vinyl toilet seat, only $15 at wal-mart and very worth it! Doesn't get cold, and it's cushy!
Ah man, some of you have thick skin! We keep ours at 65 at night and it automatically kicks on at 70 when we wake up in the mornings. I know Nelly, but I'm wracking my brain here...My won would know ;0)
I've never noticed the toilet seat being too cold except once in a blue moon.
BRRRRRRRRR we would freeze at your house. We keep our house at 74 all day and night. And PS.. you might be jealous.. we have a bathroom that doesn't have a vent cover, and when you sit on this toilet seat day or night it is very warm.. Best first thing in the morning if you have kept the door shut all night..
Liz
You are too funny! We keep the thermostat around 65 or so... we are snugglers. Have to have blankets on all the time.. just habit.
And yes, I get up all the time to check on Ros! And as for the toilet seat thing... um.... ya got me there.
I'm a total Phoenician...our thermostat is at 71 at night.
No, I don't get up to check on my kids. I only get up when they come to me and make me get out of bed.
Again, I'm a Phoenician, cold toilet seats don't happen very often around here. When they do, I sometimes put my hands on the toilet seat and sit on my hands! Ha ha! You asked, you got it. :)
I got curious and decided to read the blog after I read the title - no idea what the song is, and SOOO curious..
We set our thermostat at 79 all winter long!! My husband wouldn't mind it colder but my internal thermostat is freezing, I can't get my temp above 96 degrees unless i'm sick, so yeah, our house is nice and warm, and so because of that we have never experienced this cold toilet you speak of.... So far as checking the kids go, if I am awake I check, or if I am cold, or if I hear noises... so I guess Yes I check a lot!
Debi
74 because our thermostat is in the dumbest location so the rest of the house is probably more like 70 because of drafts etc.
I do NOT check on my kids.I have a hard and fast rule not to even bother a child, including opening bedroom doors, once they're asleep unless I am convinced I heard something coming from there room. You know soething that sounds like someone might be breaking in to steal them OR like they may be partaking in some reverse digestion.
Too funny. I don't know the song, but I have a few guesses. We keep our therm set at 65 and use a warm comforter. My hubby and I do check on the kids before we go to bed...and as for the toilet seat...I think I'm too zombied out to notice. Fun post!
We just got a new programmable thermostat so I have actual numbers to tell you. 50 degrees overnight, 60 during the day. I check on kids before I go to bed around midnight and the toilet seat problem... Maybe you could get a washable fuzzy cover just for you! Talk about a throne:)
You must be related to my mom. She kept the thermostat at 62 all winter long!!! I think that is why I have such horrible circulation. I don't ever audibly squeal b/c I keep my thermostat at 74! (76 when hubby is gone)
I am not even going to say what we keep our temperature at. We are BIG sissies when it comes living here in Phoenix....but I can guarantee our air condition is higher than yours in the summer. We keep that at about 80 degrees. tee hee
64? wow! I would FREEZE!!! Ours is at 71 or 72 usually. But our bedrooms are in the basement and it gets super cold down there. And yes I do check on my kids at night. Probably too much. I am obsessive about it. ha ha.. don't remember the last time I slept COMPLETELY through the night.... not good. and to make the toilet seat warmer? ha ha.. I have no good ideas. Make someone else sit on it first :)
DELURKING HERE!!!!
Woot!!
So... we keep the thermostat on 73. We like it toasty and LOVE shelling out hundreds to the nice folk down at the gas company ...grrr...
And I don't have to check on my kids because we co-sleep. And not because we are a special kind of crazy but because ... well... it just worked out that way.
This is so funny. We keep it at 68 because half of our house is UNinsulated (thanks to the previous owner/builder) It gets COOOOLD in here (especially since we're in MN).
The toilet seat is strangely not that cold though, I don't know why.
I do not get up to check on the kiddos, but I do check right before I go to bed.
Wow, lots of questions to answer! Well being out here in the Midwest where it is currently -8 degrees, our thermostat is set at a toasty 76 degrees. But don't let that fool you! It is way old and registers about 6 degrees off, so it is around 70 degrees. I check on Aida before I go to bed, but not Ariah. She wakes up way too easily! And luckily if I leave my bathroom door closed, the toilet seat doesn't get too cold because we have a tiny bathroom with no window! So there ya go!
I think we set ours about 65 at night at 69 in the day (though I'm cold blooded and am constantly turning it up a degree or two)I'm always freezing but use lots of blankets etc. We do check on the kids before we go to bed but I don't get up just for fun:) AND I hear ya about the toilet seat. Ours is right under the vent and gets sooo cold! If you find a good solution would you let me know! In the meantime I'll keep squealing!
I thought we would never have to use the heat in the desert, but alas, I was wrong. We keep our heat at about 67, because around 65 my kids start peeing the bed (for some weird reason). We found that out the hard way too many times. I like how your squeak makes it better. Cute :)
I gotta know the song!
its getting hot in here so take off all your clothes?
or is it
Thong song?
We keep our thermostat at 71 in the winter and 86 in the summer. I do not like to be cold but like to be hot (good thing I live in AZ, huh?) And I used to check on my kids but now I don't. Paul might but I dont. I think if my house was as cold as yours I wouldnt pee in the middle of the night...
I don't know that we have any set temperature. We are always changing it depending on how we feel. One of the boys is sleeping and he's sick. I usually turn the fan on to help him sleep, but I just turned on music since I don't know how the fan will affect his immune system.
Anyway... "The Last Lecture" is on my To Read list. I have a long To Read list though. I almost bought the book at Costco the other day.
We keep our the same day and night: about 69. I don't check on my kids at night because I know they won't have their blankets on them.
Laughing because I know what you almost used for your title. And you're gonna laugh at me. We keep our thermostat at 72 at night, but also have the ceiling fans on. We all like it cool with big down comforters on. Yes, that's cold for us. Remember we have thin AZ blood or something.
Thermostat HAS to be NO LOWER than 76. EVER! That's a deal breaker!
No, I NEVER did check on the kids. Don't check on the grandchild either.
And I rarely pee in the night, but when I do, the house is warm enough, the seat isn' cold.
Most people would HATE living with me!
I try not to pee at night if I can help it, if I must, then I am half asleep, so I don't remember, but I do not get up to check on the kids.... I had too many years of that.
and the thermo here? 65, it's a long story, but it's medically proven if you keep it too warm, people stay sick, so ( dad is in health profession) I guess our bodies are a little adjustd, though today, it's below zero here, so we did up it to 68 LOL
Oh my goodness, my friend. A cold toliet seat will never do. Thank goodness I am visiting your blog this morning because I could very well have the answer to what you have been waiting for....

PS: Like you, I also do not cover my kids much at night. Why? They just kick the covers off anyway? :)
We keep the thermostat set at 67 at all times. But we have space heaters in our rooms at night to keep us warmer. I would keep it set at 74 if we could afford it. :) I would freeze at 64. Brrrr...
I actually get up a few times at night to check to make sure the kids are comfortable. No wonder I'm always so tired, aye!?
It's funny that you mentioned the cold toilet seat. I have been meaning to write a post on my blog for a while now, about just that topic. I'd pay GOOD money for a toilet seat warmer. There is nothing worse than getting up in the middle of the night to go pee and have to sit down on an ice block!! :)
HaHaHaHa!
I check on the kids every 10 minutes..cause I'm OCD that way...
Love to be cozy and warm so we hit 74 degrees...gotta be ready for my hot Liam Neeson dreams...can't do that if I freezing to death!
Just the other day I saw a lambswool toilet seat cover..I'm sure whoever created it meant well, but eeewww....cleanup..not fun...
Thanks for visiting me! I wish my husband would use color nicknames! It's not pretty out in public when my hubby starts cooing to "Christine." He looks mental!
Hugs!
