Answering Your 'Aumakua Questions

Like I said before, I spoke with Christian's mom a couple of nights ago and asked her about 'aumakuas. The things she told me were so fascinating!

First, a couple of you said you were interested in reading her stories. Although she has many, many stories in manuscript form, only one of them has actually been published. You can find one of her awesome manta ray stories here.

First I asked her how she decided I was a seahorse? She laughed. She said, "You know how you meet someone, and you say to them, 'You remind me of my aunt.'? I spent so much time underwater that I knew the personalities of all of the sea animals. They were my friends. When I met you, you reminded me of a seahorse."

Then I asked her whether people have a land and a water 'aumakua, and she said definitely. She said the deer is her land 'aumakua. Everything about her is like the personality of a deer (according to her). So Lynsie, you were right!

Next, I asked her if you choose your 'aumakua or if it chooses you. She said, "You cannot choose it. It's just comes through as what it is."

Finally, I asked her what most of you wanted to know: how do people find out what their 'aumakua is? She said that everybody has the ability to know their own. Then she started talking so fast I could hardly keep up with writing. She said the following things, but not jumbled like I am going to write it: What gives you joy when you see it? When you are out in nature, recognize what draws itself to you. You may have dreams or thoughts about it. Pay more attention. It's very personal. Open yourself up and listen better. It may be who speaks to you, or how you relate to them...an affinity for certain things.

She is very in tune with the animal world. Sometimes I wish I could see things through her eyes.

Hopefully this answers a few of your questions!

(P.S. There is going to be a bloggy meet & greet this Saturday, April 18 at 1:30 PM at the Costa Vida in Cedar City, exit 57 right next to the lighthouse and Zion's Bank, if you are interested. Suzette is going to be there. So am I. If you want to be cool, you'll be there too. Email me if you can make it - eringirl13 at gmail dot com.)

Thanks for sharing your conversation with Christian's mom. Figuring out my 'aumakua on my own sounds hard! I guess I'm not very in tune with nature.

Have fun at the lunch this weekend!

I think my wife likes Goose and Squirrel. Don't know about myself… I'll have to pay more attention and see.

Thanks for the explanation,

figuring out my husband's is easy, he is a Grizzly Bear. Mine, hmmm....not so sure. I suspect I may be some kind of bird. But its probably nothing glamorous, probably more like a buzzard or something like that. LOL---Lisa, Clan of the Cave Hair. (stupid "remember me" button)

I don't have St. George this week, so I will be there! How fun to have TWO Costa Vida lunches with you in two weeks!

I will have to think about mine. I wonder if I could figure out which animal I am most like....

Fascinating post! Love your blog.

I think mine is a butterfly (can it be insect?).

PS: found you on MM blogs! ;)

Thanks for the shout out Erin! I love that you are writing about this. I found my "spirit animal" (that's what I call it) about 8 years ago. I had no idea what I would have in store. Mine is the Owl. I have had the opportunity to care for, heal, rehabilitate, release into the wild, train to be animal ambassadors and even teach a great horned owl to kiss my lips without biting. When you find your animal, it usually finds you. In fact I was very afraid of Owls when then first picked me. Now, I LOVE OWLS and ALL that they represent.

It's too bad we don't hold meet & greets on Sundays; I'm going to be passing Cedar City on my way to St. George on Sunday. That's me--always a day late and a dollar short.

Am I alone in that I'm more confused than ever?

I think you already know I am all about the shark :)

But that is mostly a name thing - although now I feel like I have a connection to them.

Ah, Erin, I so wish I could be at the luncheon!

Thanks for the aumakua info. As a teenager, I'd have sworn mine was a dolphin. I know it. But now? I'm not so sure anymore.

Interesting. I'm pretty sure my dog is my land aumakua. Not sure that all dogs are, but me and my dog....we are exactly alike :)

I have no clue how you decide what you are or how you come about it. Basically I don't have time between working full time and trying to be a full time mom. I would have to ask you mother in law how this all works!

The dog must be my land aumakua. I'll have to think about my water one. I decided the sea witch wasn't completely appropriate since I don't think they actually exist except in Disney's Little Mermaid. Will need to think on it a bit.

THis is really interesting. I tend to think I am not an animal person because I am allergic to so many. But It would be interesting to start paying attention. Very cool information. I love that yours is seahorses. It does fit a little bit.

Very cool...thanks for the additional information. I'm going to figure out what mine is...I hope it's not a bear and that it doesn't eat me!

That's so cool!
Is it bad that I'm still a little confused?
Sometimes I'm so bad at understanding things! Ahh!

This is cool. The YW pres in our ward is a diver at the Aquarium of the Pacific. I'll have to ask her if she knows about this stuff. I never heard it before, but it's fun to think about.

LisAway said...

Thanks for this. Does it have to be an animal? It probably has to be an animal, but if it didn't I'd be moss.

I love moss. I really need to blog about moss one of these days. And I'm about as active as moss. Yes, I think my 'aumakua is moss.

I wonder if it's supposed to come to us immediately or if it will kind of show up now that we're open to it.

I love this whole idea! The kids and I are going to delve into this over the weekend:) Thanks for the food for thought!

Bummer. I was in Zions yesterday and wish I knew about the lunch earlier. I hope it was fun. And I love the Aumakua info. I'm not much of an animal person though so I'd really have to think about it.
