I am not laughing at you, I am crying for you. I find it very sad that you have to sneak a bottle of beer for use in cooking for fear of being discovered by a member of your church. I'm crying for you because your not allowed to thing for yourself, because your oppressed by your religion.I want to explain a few things. I know you may not care what I have to say, because you believe I have blind faith. But as a matter of fact, I have agency and I can do whatever I damn well please. I CHOOSE to love my religion. And in reality, I know that my religion would not care whether or not I purchased a beer. Unfortunately, it's one of my own personal issues that made me write my blog post in the manner that I did: the issue of feeling judged, of people making assumptions about me based on the very one-dimensional aspect of reading my blog, and not actually knowing anything about me. I was afraid that I may be judged negatively by people who may think that purchasing beer is wrong. Ironically, instead I felt judged and pitied by YOU.
I feel sad that you have so many misconceptions of my religion. I really do think for myself, and I am absolutely not oppressed by my religion. I urge you to do a little more research about my church before you pity me again. Click here to learn some true information about my religion.
But in reality, I want to thank you. I want to thank you because this one comment has created a catalyst in me that has made me realize I can write whatever I want on my blog. You don't have to agree with me. I read a few blogs in which I don't agree with some of their stances or way of living. And do you know what I do? I click the little x in the top right corner. I don't feel the need to shame them, condemn them, or pity them.
Sincerely,

Yee-haw, Erin!
I get so tired of the whole you-can't-think-or act-for-yourself-because-of-your-oppressive-religion CRAP. I can't stand it. I am MORE FREE than most folks I know because of the things I have been taught and CHOOSE to believe in and live by! I wish people would go to the source for their information on the church instead of relying on our "opponents", for lack of a better word.
I had a friend tell me once that she prayed for my salvation and hoped every single day that I would see the light.
I told her I was so grateful for her prayers. They were working! Cause I was really happy and felt really blessed and was CERTAIN of my salvation.
I'm glad you responded to this comment. There are a lot of misconceptions out there. And it stinks. Funny how the judgement came from the other side of the spectrum isn't it?
I remember your post about people that read your blog but hardly comment. I am one of them that reads your every blog post but has only commented once...and it was in response to the very post I just mentioned. Well, this post makes me want to comment once more.
GOOD FOR YOU!
I think you blog for you...not for anonymous.
Yay, Erin! I remember that when I posted about going to Vegas, and posted that I only took a picture in front of the slot machine, and didn't actually gamble (which was true at that time), someone left a comment, thinking it was funny that I would even have to qualify that statement.
People are ridiculous.
1. People who hide behind ANON - suck
2. People who feel the need to judge you and your OWN BLOG POSTINGS - suck
Now, I am off to the grocery store to buy the one can of beer for Sugar Daddy to marinade the steaks in for Saturday.
Keep doing "your" thing. That is what blogging is ALL ABOUT
Holla! High Five! Good for you Erin. Way to stand up for yourself and your religion. Glad you addressed it.
Oh, and I asked my husband about what beer would be good to use since he has some experience in that area. He said to get Amber Boc made by Michelobe. He also said lager is not dark.
So weird. I was totally ready for you to get grief from people who didn't approve of using alcohol in cooking. Who'd have guessed that you'd get this instead?
It's totally cowardly to hide behind anonymity. I am excited to hear that the comment is a catalyst for you to more fully be yourself on your blog. Can't wait!
Erin, this is actually one of your better posts, because you don't give a damn who thinks what of you for writing it. Good for you. One of the things I *dont* like about blogging is the way some bloggers use it to manage their image. I say let it all hang out and be who you are...like you just did. good job!
Totally.
(Just thought I'd throw that word into the mix again - in case you didn't get enough in my last comment)
Well said Erin. Good for you!
Erin, I think I love you even more. If that is possible.
Not love you in a stalker-ish way but in a "I want to be like Erin" way.
You be YOU! Because you know what? YOU rock.
Awesome post Erin! You have a way with words.
Well put, sister. I'm still waiting for your vlog btw:)
You go girl!
OH MY GOSH
I just wrote a novel. And it disappeared.
This post hurts my heart a little for you, Erin. Why do people have to suck? Seriously. It is a blog, which means that by definition it entitles you to shout YOUR opinion from the highest rooftop as loud as you can.
I like the way you ended this post. X marks the spot, people, use it. Oh, and don't mess with my friend, Erin. She is much too cool and well-spoken for this kind of crap.

WHY DIDN'T YOU STATE THAT THE MOST OFFENSIVE PART OF HIS/HER COMMENT WAS THAT IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE YOU'RE????
hahaha
And I have to say, I totally know how you felt in the liquor store. I totally sympathized. I felt so awkward and out of place in there (and stupid too).
It's just a funny situation to someone who doesn't drink! And at the same time you're like uhh uhh, I don't drink!
We're not oppressed by our religion. We CHOOSE to do what we do! That's what makes me so mad about people. We don't just not drink because we're told not to. We do it because we've thought about it, perhaps prayed about it (not me, I just don't want to!), and ultimately decided this is what we wanted to do. We are not sheep.
This is something I feel PASSIONATELY about. And coming from someone who doesn't even go to church a lot! I don't blindly follow ANYTHING.
OMG!!!
Wow, just wow.
Yeah! Go Erin, go Erin go! :)
Way to take a stand for yourself! Be strong Erin!
What a jerk!
WOW is all i can say to that anonymous comment!! If I had a recipe, I probably would send my husband to buy the beer, or stock up when I went to a different town. I don't think you would be the only one to hide!! It probably just amounts to just doing something you don't ever do!
Amen!
Nice response, Erin. It's too bad that people judge without knowing all of the facts.
I think the thing that bothers me about that comment is the word "oppressed". "To crush or burden by abuse of power or authority." That's harsh. And quite a rash assumption. I'm glad you defended not only yourself but alos our whole church. Way to go!
Well said, Erin.
I don't think anyone could have explained it better...great response!
loved this! Good for you!
You go girl! Besides, ANON has bad grammar and spelling! (I hate that!)
Ok, so I've been reading your blog for a while and have never commented, but I have to say:
Go, Erin!
People like that drive me crazy!
BTW, I love your blog!
Your FAB Erin! Anon comments are the bane of blogging existence. So sheepish.
I think blog posts where we don't worry about what other people think are the most interesting to read. The more I proof-read, the more boring I become.
Hey anon-I use to drink beer & really liked it, but then I CHOSE not to. Because I CAN think for myself, not because of religious oppression.
WAY TO SAY IT!!!!!
Fairly new follower to your blog - was drawn by the title - 'cos that's what I do when I get a moment (blog, that is)
Nobody should judge the contents of another's blog - like you say, there's a 'x' in that top corner! Go Erin, keep it up girl!
Good for you. I think I'd like to hang out with you.
So many people don't seem to get the whole combo of thinking for ourselves AND following a certain social behavior. It's like you only REALLY think for yourself if you think you might like to drink alcohol or have premarital sex. What sadness.
Good for you Erin!!!
How convenient they leave an anonymous comment. I always find people so cowardly if they're gonna bash someone they don't give you the opportunity to respond back to them directly.
And your right. This is YOUR blog. You can write what you want. EVERYTIME.
:)
couldn't have said it better! yeah you!
Amen to that! :o)
very well put, erin.
Hi Erin. I liked the blog you wrote and find it fantastic you are vocal and forthright about your views. And you are also open minded considering you don't drink, but will read my blog (and comment) and I have "cocktail" in my blog title. Plus, you have a witty sense of sharing your story and that hardly seems oppressed correct? I think you should feel like a superstar today. And a role model. Who knew the anonymous paparazzi are paying such close attention, right?
Well said Erin! I'm proud of you!
Erin, I'm SO glad so many people read your blog, and will read/have read this post!!
You don't know anything unless you go to TRUE sources to learn about it! Especially when it comes to religion. To anonymous, if you really want to know about our religion, find an LDS chapel. Go to our church - just once! - and see for yourself!
Great post, Erin! And thanks for yesterday!! You're awesome!
All I was going to say was what the Boob nazi said. To quote Ross on friends "You're means you are. Your means YOUR." Hopefully this persons thoughtless comment didn't ruin your day. Way to respond.
Hooray for you, Erin!!! I love this post! I took a break from blogging for a bit because of a few judgement issues...I came to the same realization that you did...Write whatever you want! It's your blog and if people don't like it...click the X!
Fabulous post!
Obviously you CAN think for yourself, since you went against what I think most mormons (incorrectly) believe about cooking with alcohol.
Write what you want, girl.
ERIN YOU ROCK!!! I wish I could express my feelings as eloquently as you do. Way to stand up for yourself!
You said it, sister!
Good for you, Erin! Way to tell that little biddy off...
:~D
Erin,
Love your spunk!
Rosey
You go girl! Amen to what you said.
Ditto what everyone else has already said.
Your blog is your home. People lose their manners on the internet.
Now, print the comment out and run it over with your car.
It feels great!
I LOVE what Motherboard just said!! Your blog IS your home! This is totally off topic, but as a private-blog blogger, it makes me wonder who I would really invite into my home. Who am I comfortable having in my home? Makes me think...
And also, people DO lose their manners on the Internet! It makes me think of Elder Bednar's recent CES fireside, where he talks about how even on the Internet, you can't be anonymous to God. So true.
Hizah
I noticed that your Beer Batter post did not have any way to leave a comment, so I'll give you my comment here.
I remember working at a Pizza restaurant in college and was washing green peppers in one sink while in the other was Pitchers of beer that customers didn't finish. The smell of both made me think that beer-battered fried green peppers would be a great thing to try.
They should change "anonymous" to "I would like to remain a giant pansy"
:-)
It seems pretty obvious you weren't scared of getting discovered by members of your church--you blogged about it! Maybe he's a behaviorist and believes that people are only manipulated into their certain behaviors--so where did he get his from? Love you Erin!
I love your last paragraph and because of it I'll refrain from feeling sorry for the marginally literate individual who left said comment.
Amen sista!! you tell 'em!!
Way to go! Blogging is for you and your thoughts. How rude of someone to leave a comment like that. I love what you have posted for leave your comment now:)
Thanks for the comment on my blog, I see that your "anonymous" was much more blatent in their attack on you.
I have a lot of friends that put things on their blogs that I think are BS, I always go type the comment I wish I could say, and then I delete it and click that "x" you talked about. If I can't say something nice, why should I say something at all.
That was my entire point to my anonymous. That's what my momma taught me.
On a side note, I would totally hide the beer too. I am always so afraid of being seen buying things, and not by other members...but my grandparents who are Baptist!
I laughed when I read that comment, people can seriously be SO narrow minded. Give me a break! Very well said, high five chicka!! :)
Seriously? Someone actually posted that? Ugh! She must feel shame for even posting it to make it "anonymous". I feel sorry for her that she cares what other people think of her comment that she had to go anonymous. I am "crying" for HER that she doesn't have the gumption to stand up and use her own name because she's afraid of being judged. I find that quite ironic and two-faced. Kudos to you Erin for standing up for yourself.
Great post. That is one thing about our blogs is that we can be ourselves or at least we should be able to. I can't believe some people actually are willing to get on someone's blog and say things like that. Keep up the good work.
Read both posts just now. I totally admire (and get) your humor on the post but mostly I am impressed with the way you handled your frustrations. You are such a great example to all of us!
I really wish that I could write something like this so eloquently. Well done.
