Something Different

Our family was playing Go Fish a few days ago, and I was reminded of this:

This was always my favorite Bert & Ernie/Sesame Street sketch of all time.

Click here, and do not push the red button. (Thanks to Tammy for finding the link.)

Yesterday, we found a caterpillar on our cherry tomato plant. It is the biggest caterpillar I have ever seen. I think it's the same kind of caterpillar that was in A Bug's Life. Last night, my husband had a dream that he was on Man vs. Wild and had to eat this caterpillar, and the guts were squishing everywhere (my kids loved hearing this dream).

(Bug's Life picture taken from here.)

Oh, and I've been watching So You Think You Can Dance this season with a friend, and there have been a couple of awesome performances. Alyssa posted both of the ones I loved on her blog yesterday. Click over to check them out (one of them, if not both, will make you cry. They are amazing.)

that caterpillar is GROSS! I would FREAK out if I found him in my garden. ACK!

I just had to know: tomato hornworm which turns into the five spotted hawkmoth.

I saw one of the moths over by Sophie's preschool. It was huge...like a 5 inch wing span. Pretty amazing.

But still gross.

Wow...I have never seen a caterpillar (or worm) that huge! I have however seen a hawkmoth. We get them up here and they're the size of a small bird. Freaky but cool at the same time.

Other than the movie, me and Bugs do not get along.

:shudder:

:shudder again:

We get caterpillars like that all the time.
My mom takes them and squishes them with a shovel.

Be careful. They can strip your tomato plant in one night.

I HATE the green tomatoe worms. My husband pays the kids 25 cents if they'll smash them--gross.

Theresa said...

Better get rid of that worm or he will eat it all up! Seven dust or flip it in a bucket of dishwater.
Hopefully that will not get me in trouble with worm lovers:) Ta ta for now!

Holy Caterpillar BATMAN!

That is THE BIGGEST Caterpillar I have ever seen! Kinda gross! What are you feeding the bugs in your gardne?

Charmaine said...

I think it looks like the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland - be careful, you may find him sitting on a mushroom smoking dope tomorrow!

Just SO said...

That is a seriously HUGE Caterpillar!! ANd I love Ernie and Bert.

Denise said...

Gross caterpillar. I haven't seen one forever-(probably good I haven't because I really can't stand them). I bet your boys loved seeing it.

Growing up, one of our jobs as kids was to go through the plants and look for those tomato worms and kill them. They were always so disgusting! I haven't seen one in forever, but yeah, they will destroy your plants and quick.

I read blogs while I nurse and the red button was perfect! I needed some funny stuff today. Thanks. :-)

I will add my wisdom to some others - squash that "caterpillar" - it's a tomato worm. You can google it. My mom used to make us search the plants for them and kill them. Gives me the heebeejeebees just thinking about it.

We too love that Bert and Ernie sketch. It's hilarious.

Man, that is the coolest caterpillar ever! I'm totally jealous on behalf of my boys.

Did you call Ripley's?

And when my husband is not out of town working (sigh) I really want to get around to commenting on your last post!

Love ya from The Heart of Dixie!

I made my hubby come over and look at the caterpillar and he says, "Wow thats a biggin'. Oh look they take good care of their tomatoes!" I thought that was cute.

Love the links and videos!

Your caterpillar about gave me a heart attack. No wonder your husband dreamed about it. Are you going to kill it? Or let it grow into a hawkmoth at the expense of your tomatoes? Or are you going to eat it instead of tomatoes--it probably has more protein than the tomatoes.

I think I'm going to have nightmares tonight.

I've never seen one that big before either! We've had them before though. Cool to see for a minute, and then just a whole bunch of yuck. :)

If you look at the base of your tomato plants, on the ground, the plants that are affected with the hornworms will have little black droppings around them. when I first saw it, I thought it was from some sort of animal, but after googling, learned that it was from the hornworms. If I saw the stuff on the ground, then I'd know to search the plant for the hornworms... the little suckers (or massively big, in your case) are hard to see! They can use their little horns to bore holes into the actual fruit too. One of God's amazingly annoying creatures. :)

Agreed that your tomatoes look lovely. I'm inching for a tomato sandwich. I wish mine would hurry and grow!

Holy long comment. :) Sorry for the hijack.

Hi Erin,
Those caterpillars are big and gross. I paid my kids to find those on my potatoes. And then we put them in a big soapy bucketfull of water. We are anti-bug at our house.

I love SYTYCD too! Those kids can do AMAzing things with their bodies!
AND I am amazed by that caterpillar. I didn't know there was a species that got that big!

Aw, good old Ernie! I keep trying to indoctrinate my kids into sesame street, it was such a big part of my childhood!

I am a HUGE SYTYCD fan, and those have been my favorite dances so far too. The addiction one is so amazing, it's like a metaphor for life and temptation and that one thing everybody has that you just can't get past, you know? I actually thought of that dance when you did your hurdle post.

musingwoman said...

Thank you for Alyssa's link. The dance "Addiction" blew me away.

Fiauna said...

Oh. My. Word. That is one ginormous bug!

Love, love, love SYTYCD! Love that Bert and Ernie clip too. I just it on a regular basis! Crazy caterpillar!

That caterpillar is HUGE!! So cool, though! And I don't remember that Bert and Ernie segment, but it's hilarious! I wish Bert and Ernie were that good now!!

Oh, and talk about WOW with that dance about addiction!! (The other video didn't work... Stinkin' copyright crap!) :)
